Blontcux It is rapidly taking tho position among tho great orchestras that Its history und Its personnel warrant. The orchef.tra last evening did tho best playing that it has done hero for two seasons nt least, and the tone quality und the routine of plajlng, such ns attacks, releases, ct cetera, were far better than at ntiy time since the scries of events of nearly three ears ago, which left the great orchestra in so perilous an artistic posi tion. .Mr. BIonteu opened his program with the Beethoven Symphony No. 0, the rastoral, ' a composition winch was played by our own orchestra only a ittlc more thnti n week ago. Blr. Blonteux's rending of the "jmphony was less impassioned than that of Blr. Stokovvski, but wub a clear and dignified conception. It wus performed with irreat attention to beauty of tone aud without d.vnauilc extremes. His tempos were moderate throughout und the whole woik was plujcu wlttiout exaggeration either of time or tone. The same characteristics were notice able in the pielude to "Parifal." which followed the sjmphony. This, however, iu spite of its almost religious quality, Is more impassioned music than the sjmphony und perhaps a little greater graduation of pianissimo und fortissimo would hnve added to tho reading. The sudden illness of Emilio do Gogora, who was to have been the solo ist, necessitated tho substitution of Leo Ornstein in the BlacDowcll Concerto ln D minor No. 2 at tho last moment., Mr. Ornstein pluyed tho same concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra last season, but his performance last evening was about the best ho has yet given in Philadelphia. He played the beautiful work with great, sympathy and excellent touo quality. The accompaniment of the orchestra, however, might have been, better. Blr. Ornsteln's tone, while One iu quality, is not large, uud It would havo added to the effectiveness of the performance had only a part of the strings of tho orchestra been used In stead of tho full body. There were many places where the soloist could bo heard with difficulty, and Blr. Blontcux did not nlvvnys keep exact pace with the piano. The program puded Avith 'the "Blephlsto Walts- 'of Liszt. Harrison Cuner uctcd feelingly and un dcrstandingly. "Dust of the Rose." by Kenneth Goodman Sawyer, has its reminiscences of one of the Abbcv Theatre pluylcts. "The Travelling .Man." und also of "The Passing of tho Third Floor Ilaek." Instead of tho symbolic cm modiment of the returned C'hribt pre figured iu these, with its spiritualizing influence, the protagonist of this play, set in tho middle AA'est of America utter the civil war, is Judas Tscnriot, iu the guise of a tiamp, who seeks to utone for his great sinning, purchased with thirty pieces of silver. Dr. Earl Rice, Blrs. C. F. Dickinson aud C. L. Altmaier were noteworthy incumbents of the significant roles. A lighter touch to end the evening pleasantly was affmded ly "The Con stant Lover." by St. John Ilaukiu, whose comic spirit was capitally inter preted by Helen Shclton nnd David Vogels. hr DeVLarw a'Wson zzzz I 1215 Chestnut Street 5 Farmers and Trappers!
