J. G. WHITE COMPANY INCORPORATED 37 WALL STBEET, NEW YOUK The Great Wealth of American Corporations is indicated by the number of issues of securities that have been called for pay ment recently long before they were due. It would seem that the securities still out standing of these cor porations are worthy of careful considera tion, especially as the income returns con tinue to be so liberal. JVrffe for our rccommendationa Hemphill, Noyes & Co. Members New York Stock Exchange Franklin Bk. Bldg., Philadelphia New York Boston Scrinton EARLY ADVANCE IN STOCKS WAS NOT FULLY SUSTAINED Further Strength of Foreign Exchange and Relative Ease of Money Contributed to Cheer Market Sentiment xr ork. Doc. 17. Today's stock market acted very much ns it did yen tcrduy and the day before. It wanted to do better, did do better, but was working under a certain amount of restraint. The same factors which stimulated jcpterday's buying movement, recovery, or whatever clso one may wish to designate it, wore again In effect, nota bly the further strength of foreign ex change, relative eaw of money and scarcity of stocks. Brltlnh remittances added materially to their recent recov ery, while call money vrna again freely supplied at 7 per cent. Supplementing these encouraging factors on the con structive side of the market was the favorable Industrial news, including the higher prices quoted for furl oil and prospective foielsn buying of railroad equipment. Additional stimulating factors in the way of expectancy were supplied in be lief of the early signing of the Edge bill by the President, and a reassuring message from the Chief Executive con cerning the railroad situution. Humor had it that the President would sug gest postponement of turning back the railroads to their owners until Ann' 1, instead of January 1, as bad been planned. With the deadlock in one Sen ate over the Cummins bill, no other course was open. This delay will per mit a more intelligent deliberation of the railroad situation, and indirectly can be counted u bullish point in favor of the railroad stocks. Because of the swollen short interest little difficulty was experienced at the outset to resume the Related recovery movement which started in the late trading yesterday. The demand for stocks broadened during the morning, embracing active issues in the tobacco, textile and chemical groups. In tho meantime, gains In the motors, oils, steel and equipments shares which held first attention in the Initial proceedings were ettended 2 to 10 points. All the leading issues, however, were In supply from various sources on these advances and toward mid-day a reaction started on which n good part of the early gains were wiped out. Tho in creasing dullness following the recessions reflected the entire absence of liqui dating pnssuro outside of continued ad justments of over-extended and im paired pool accounts. In other words, after getting back to the opening level the general list displayed noteworthy resistance, indicating the path of least resistance was being met on the upward swing. This theory was strongly con firmed in the much more cheerful senti ment which prevailed throughout the street. Apart from the fresh weakness of the local pub'ic utilities the early afternoon trading was without feature of Interest. Consolidated Oas declined sharply on rumors affecting Its dividend, and Brooklyn I'nion Oas fell more than 3 point. The movement in the general list became ragged. Equipments, leather nnd low-price motor shares made a brief spurt. Other leaders, especially the steel issues, recorded moderate re cessions on profit taking, emphasising the continued nurrowncss of the current speculation. Oils, shippings and tobaccos domi nated the active final hour when the money market followed ycsterday'n course, call loans falling to 0 per cent. 11 A E F AND ME AFFAIR URTHER ADVANCE Railroad Stocks Hang Fire Pending President's Promised Message on That Situation SENTIMENT WAS CHEERFUL The investment in Internal Bonds of Foreign Governments offer opportunities that arc well worth investigation. New Yorli, Dec. 17. The New Tork livening Sun's closing financial review 'odny says: Under the Inspiration of further pro nounced betterment in the foreign ex punges nnd generally improved sentl nent in the financial community, aided by continued relative ease In money ates, trading in today's stock market had more frequent Intervals of activity on the bull side. In the first hour there was eonsld rable ginger in the transactions, but the sparkle was intermittent after that, and while a firm tone srevailcd, net iriee changes were slight except in es pecially favored quarters like tho equip ments, oils, tobaccos nnd leathers. Tho teel group was but mildly strong at '-est and the motor and shipping issues 'ikewise. The rails did very little cither way. t. Paul was weak, while Atchison and Southern Pacific were fairly well Wought. As the end of the year ap iroaches, nervousness about the return -f the roads has increased and repre sentations as to the necessity of reten ion of government control have mul tiplied. It is presumed that the ad- mlnlstrnrinn will heed the anneal, but j it is natural enough that the railroad -toeKs snoum nang nru bo iouk us iub President's promised message Ib witn icld nnd silence reigns on the subject. Operations in the market represented 'ittlc more than professional give and take. Uuying came from the bhorta and selling from foreign sources ns well as from those who sell to establish Ineaefl fnr turps. Hut tllOhC who Haui- Jatc for the latter reason stand ready in hnv hnrk in most cases, bo that, as happened today lurgely, commitments are pretty well evened up. The President's refusal to accept re oonsibility for the fate of the peace treaty has had the effect apparently of lirring senators of both parties to an effort toward what may be done in the adjustment of differences, nnd develop ments in that connection were watched with interest. With the Cnrranza reply to the state department, the Jenkins matter seems ..o be as far from settlement as ever, but Wall street appears to regard Mex ico and her periodical Irruption into the china shop of international rela tions as something to be endured with equanimity. Trompt relief measure taken this week has greatly Improved the reserve Position of. the local Clearing House In stitution, acc6rdlng to the testimony given today by the officials of the lead ing banks, -The surplus reserve has been restored nnd with the tax payment made the position ot most of the loan ing institutions should be more com fortable during the balance of the cur rent calendar year. The deficit, lt Ip understood, whs overcome by loan-calling and fresh borrowing at the Federal Reserv Bank,- It does not bring the much-tlcsircd cunler conditions In tho money market ns money conditions re maln decidedly tight. Most of the larger Institutions have little free loanable fundn, which Is at tested in refusals of the New Yorlc bids of 7 per cent today for thirty nnd ninety-day money on llfty-flfty indus trial nnd railroad collateral. There were reports of some bids of 8 per cent for money for the sama period-), which is altogether likely In the rejection of 7 per cent bid.
