The trading IB the recent nctho specialties was greatly tubducd. 'Ihesc selected issues, however, not only retained leccnt gains, but were moved up easily vhen any demand fleveloped.. This miggested quite clearly the Bupply was still ery limited. Such a theory, nt least ias fully cor loborated in tho General Asphalt shares. These recent favorltts, after laj lug dormant since the opening of the week, showed'signs. of nn awakening of n fresh speculative interest. On tel ntlvely small transactions, the common wos carried up SI to 140, wMcli it later lost, while the preferred wns raised 56" to Ulli. Tho same thought wns further con firmed in the case of American Ship, which stock on sales of little over 100 shares advanced S2. at to i2lA- Electric Storage llattery, which in the two preceding sessions had held the limelight, apparently encountered re newed realizing sales, which was-altogether logical in view of tb 17 all iance in the two previous sessions. That all offerings were readily absorbed mui attested in the uairow fluctuation of quotations which were limited to a range of $1 between 149 and 1C0, until near tho close when the price yielded to 145. Some interesting light was thrown today on the lecent puzzling selling of United Uas Improvement Uompauy, which under this persistent pressure was depressed recently to G0?4. According to information obtained to day from a usually highly reliable source, this belling emanated from a prominent local financial institution, which 11 few years ago was known to be a heavy holder of the company s stock. Part of these holdings were liquidated about fhe jears ago uud it was learned today that the balance was slowlj peddled out on the market This would account for tho dribbling liquidation encountered in the last six weeks. Tho stock was never forced on sale, but was fed out as fast as the absorption capacity of the market would permit, without causing a serious slump in price. While most of tho stock w as liquidated between 01 and 68, which is relatively a low price, 3 ct it is understood, that tho company was nbic to get ont either with a slight profit or about even, 11s result of tho numerous stock dividends and allotments it had received on its original purchases. In tho opinion of competent observers the present dividend rate, while not fully earned last 5 car, is no danger. The Inrge surplus which the company has built up, in thejr opinion, assures n continunnco ot the present rate, until the abnormal conditions now prevailing in the public utility field are corrected, The stock was ngaln inclined to bo heavy today, receding to OlJ. The selling was on a small scale. That of the financial institution mentioned above is understood to haie been completed a ween ago. Lake Superior Corporation boomlet was punctured somewhat when efforts were made to cash in some of the paper profits. A further advance of ;)i wns made in the earlv trading to 2, but, profit-taking sales caused a quick shrinkngc in price to 22M.
