Now York, Aug. 21. The New Yoik I'vening Sun's financial review for this nfternoon is ns follows: In its underljing character, today's stock market was not much to be dis tinguished from previous sessions this week Surface manifestations ' were variable. There was pretty good buv ing among the stnndaul shares through out, nt least sufficient at the worst to keep them from slipping unduly nt a time when one of the specialties, late, present or prospective speculate c favorites dropped 3 to 10 points, in cluding Keystone Tire, New York Dock, Kcllj -Springfield and Ameniuti Kumatrn. As the day advanced, less pressure was exerted and in the afternoon the inherent resiliency ot the list wns en abled to make n demonstration, (iood gnlus were registered by those shares whkh had been merely marking time. nnd substantial recovery wns effected bv the others However, it wns it traders' market of moderate piopor tions and it was evident that opera tions were governed more by th tech nical position of stocks thnn by news developments. The fact that the steel workmen in the Youngstown district failed to vote au'immedintc strike, was in one sense encouraging, nnd in another sense irri tating While it Aould seem to indicate that the employes were not prepared to go ns far as their paid agitators would have them go, the provision in the vote for a conference with representatives of the United States Steel Corporation, within n peuod of ten days, leaves thel whole thing in the nir, piling nnother uncertainty m the mountain of uncer tainties which Wall street nnd thr in ditstml world see looming before them. Todnv'S price movements might well have bten inteipreted ns n renction from the Street's inclination to take n more gloomv view ot the situation than the I steel trade itself. If repenled advances in the wnge scale, such as the United States Steel Corporation has made m the wnr pe riod, mean anything to labor, thej mean that when n showdown comes even the limited number of union men in 'the Youngstown district will not be a unit in walking out. At least, there wns distinct improve ment in sentiment in the financial com munity, which was reflected not only in stocks, but in foreign exchange, cotton and grain. The share list made net gains of 1 to 2 points, with the best display of sustained strength in mid afternoon. There is, of course, a siz nble Bhort interest which wns embold ened to cover by the resistance to pres sure, which has been noted this week even when the list appeared to be most reactionary. 31 n 36 1H 10 Refined Sugars Unchanged New York, Aug. 21.
