Sales on tho New York Stock Kxchange passed the mllllon-shnro mark again today, with business distributed among so many Issues It jjavc further proof of n broadening tendency and Increasing outside Interest, No one seemed to caro for news develop ments In today's trading, but everything seemed to go by speculative favor, a condition that ulwajs prevails when u buying vruo spreads over the country. Including In the price movements were many violent advunccs, but at the same time, while various stocks moved up with pronounced vigor, otlur Issues were In supply, causing cross-mocments all through the list at frequent intervals. Tho I'clroleum group was most prominent In the tlrst half of the- day, when Texas Company started a oIcanlc advance that did not stop until the stock hud risen more than 11 points to nboe 20S. Mexi can Petroleum was heavily traded In lit prices ranging from 177 to 192, and other oil stocks, Including the low-priced Issues, were In urgent demand, with Inside buying competing with the outside speculative ele ment In accumulating these shaies. Baldwin Locomotive was the feature of tho steel group, advancing more than 3 points to 91U and then reacting more than 2 points, 1'hlladelphlans were bujers. Tho heaviest trading In all the list, however, was In the market leader, United States Steel, In which the sales were far above 150,000 shares, but that stock was one which suffered from tho strength In other issues and from an advance of to SS yielded and closed with a net loss. Industrial Alcohol made a gain of more thnn ft points to 128, and Sloss Shcllleld rose 3 points and more to 59. Reactions occurred from the high levels of many Issues, but buying Increased In volume as soon us lower prices were established. One of the features of the bond market today as well as for home days past has been tho demand for convertible bonds, a natural sequence of advances of stocks In which they are entitled to be exchanged. There was continued heavy trading of I'nlted Hallway of S.m l'ranclsco 4s, which sold at 33V4. Traction bonds were general higher, and there was a good volume of business In a number of the foreign government Issues.
