There was one banker who maintained that befoie resigning former Director General McAdoo threatened. If his tlvejear plan was not ac cepted, the roads tvould at once be turned back. In connection with any discussion of the railroad question the following-, taken from the k months' report of the American Locomotive Com pany Just published. Is considered b some financiers of special Importance: "It Is tltally Important to the prosperity of the locomotive lndustrj, and all Industries connected with the building and equipment of rallwas, that a prompt and definite settlement be made of the qurstlons before Congress of the disposition and financing of the railroads of this countij , such settlement will aid materially In the teadjustment of ?eneial busi ness from a war to a peace basis" A. B. I.each fc Co leport that the Columbia Gas and Kkctrlo Company shows an Increase In net earnings for January of 2.90 per cent over January, 1918; of 2 76 per cent In the balance for bonds, and of 3 21 per cent In surplus, although gloss enrnlngs showed a teductlnn of 517 per cent. To offset this ttas a reduction In operating expenses of 12 89 per cent. Smaller gas dellteries affected the gross earnings from this source, but Increases In the electric department amounted to approximately 18 per cent as compared with the earnings of this depailment In .lanuaty, 1318. Columbia Gas and l'lectrlc Compan continues to show lncieaes In gasoline production from week to week The total for the week ended February 14, as made public bv A. B. I.each & Co, was 3S7.317 gallons, as against 248,593 gallons for the corresponding week of 191S: while the amount from January 1 to February U was 2,238,577 gallons, against 1,884,488 gallons. The week again broke the compan's record for pro duction, also registered the largest dally output, riming c!oe to 60,000 gallons for one daj , and the highest yield, 253 gallons, per million Bonbrlght & Co, Inc. call attention to the tepott for January, 1919, of the Great 'Western Potter Sjstem. This sjstem Is made up of' a con solidation of the Great Western Power Companj, the California Klettiic Generating Company, the City niectrlc Company, the Great Western Power Company of California and the Consolidated Klectilc Company. The gross earnings of the sjstem for .lanuaiy, 1919, wce $425,748 97, an Increase of $80,475 75 over January, 1918, or 16 5 per cent. The operat ing expenses and taxes for January show an Increase of 2 3 per cent as compared with January a year ago, but the operating ratio for January, 1919, was 38 6 per cent, as compared ttlth 43 9 per cent for January, 1918, while the total lncvme for January, 1919, was $269,788 20, as compaied with $200,918.43, an Increase of almost $70,000. The results for the whole jear ended January 31, 1919, as compared with the previous jear, bear almost similar ratios. Railroad Administration Considering Financing Erie It was learned on Saturday that the railroad admInlstr, rtlon at Washington has under active consideration financing of tho Krle IJall road Companj. One plan which has been under advisement called for the extension of the present notes for a period of three jears at 6 per cent, with a bonus of $15 per $1000 note to present holders), the price of the new notes to be 93i. The $15 per bond -would represent the dlffei ence between their par value and the price of the new Issue. Bankers, however, were not Inclined to levt- this offer with favor, strongly main taining that better terms would be necessary if the proposed financing by the road la to be satisfactory arranged. Liberty Loan bonds are lower, with a heavy turnover ieing recoided throughout the daj's session foreign government bonds are active and firm. Railroad and Industrial bonds are quiet, and traction Issues are weak -with a substantial volume changing hands, particularly the Inter borough Metropolitan 4,is, There Is a good deal of speculation on foot as to who will be thr successful bidders for the $8,000,000 city of Philadelphia bonds, on which the bids ttlll be opened today at the City Hall. It is generally thought some of the New York houses represented here will be the highest blddeis Short-term notes are quiet, but few changing hands thioughout Sat urday's half-session, and prices are about unchanged from Frldaj's finals. It Is regarded as unlikely that any pronounced changes will take place In quotations In the immediate future, as eveiy one engaged In the trade Is making an effort to clean up such issues as they now hate on hand preparatory to devoting their time to the sale of the new government notes in April. iy 1 Tot Chase 121 "ranklln Na'lonal .
