Musical in Discriminating ' Philadelphia jt CIELDOAr has morn nerfrt urtlati v "J been heard In Philadelphia than the tinging ot lime Margaret Matzenauer at the concert of the Philadelphia Or chestra last week. This nttlst, espe cially at the Saturday evening conceit, howed lierelf to be one of the great concert singers of the tvoild as well ai ene, of the best operatic stars Her artistry, as revealed at these concerts, Was not so much In vocal display as In her fine Interpretation and her nttet adaptability to tie varying moods pt her elections and the styles of totally dif ferent composers She has been selected by Mr Slo kowshl to sing with tho orchestia at the first New York concert and she will ing the same numbers that she gave here, tha exquisite "Poeme" of Chaus on and the three beautiful songs of Tschalkowsky, orchestrated by Ml. Slo- l TjuivLYLii, it is not Hie purpose. X1 hero to write a panegyilc on the art ot Mme Matzenauer, superlative as that art may be, but rather to point out, for the benefit alike of other singers as well as concertgoers, the excellent judg ment she used In the choice of her num bers An opeVa singer of the first rank. It would naturally have been expected that she would choose some operatic se lection with every detail of which Bhe was familiar and which she was sure of Interpreting In the best possible way. Hut to the delight of those who be lieve that a symphony concert is the place for what, In the vocabualry of the vocalist, correspinds to absolute music, ho choso the numbers referred to abovq nd with the most happy results Both fitted Into tho program exactly, and the Tschalkowsky songs, with their unmis takably Slavic atmosphere, led grcefuliy Into the Illmsky-Korsakow "Capptlcclo Kspagnolc" which took the place of the. customary symphony. ' IT IS to 1)6 regretted that mole singer? do not use songs of this kind for symphony concerts Of course, there nr not many of tho quality and gen eral typo of tho Chausson, "Poeme," but there Is no doubt that to the hearers At least It was a welcome charjgb from Bio usual operatic aria. Jn fact, the use of opera music at Jflraost nny symphony concert Is a (matter open to question. The opera Is Jfha antithesis of the symphony, and to 4et tho full effect Intended by the com poser of an elaborate operatic aria somo knowledge of the dramatic situation at that particular point Is needed, as well tia tho scenery, costume and many other things ' extraneous to the music itself, which go to make up the full effective ness of such compositions Therefore, from the standpoint of the singer alone, tho orchestrated song Is to be preferred. ON THE other hand, the symphony Is absolute music in one of Its purest forms; probably next to the string iuartet, the purest. The effect of a highly emotional symphonic work such as Tschalkowsky's "Pathetlque," to quote a well known example, may be utterly lost by a brilliant operatic aria v following it, even if the two are not In Juxtaposition. CYou may note that in next week's concert Mr. StokowaM has placed the "Pathetlque" last on the pro gram) Yet It is safe to say that not even this highly, or rather darkly col ored symphony would have suffered In its effect on the audience bv preceding either of the selections of Mme Matzen auer at last week's" concert. In r tha days when the purpose ot choQsJngVja.'i vocal' number was the dis nlay'of .the purely. vocal art ot a sinner. the cpVratIc aria, was undoubtedly the, nest cnoCB,. flut those days now seem to be .'happily past. Art Is infinitely beHl;-Cf"ervcd bjf the choice of composi tions UucKs tltdse which Mme. Matien mler.gav.e so effectively. t x ' '' BOTIfoy- trie spoken and -the written word some of the leading viola plaj rs of tho city both professional and amateur, have protested against certain strictures In this column last Saturday to the effect that the viola tone is too somber ahd monotonous to make an . effective solo instrument, although the paragraph In question cheerfully ad mitted Its extreme beauty In orchestral and espeolally In quartet work How ever, the writer remains still uncon vinced. The razor-tongued Berlioz on being eked once, "What Is worse than a concerto for a flute?" responded In chai scterlstlo manner, "A concerto for two flutes." But that Is not the proper at titude toward the viola, which Is Indeed & lovely Instrument. It asked, "What Is worse than a sonata tor viola and piano?" the correct answer Is not "A sonata for two violas fcnd two pianoi" nor yet "Two sonatas for viola and piano '' The right thing to do Is to say nothing And let no truculent musician put quotation marks around the last word. SPEAKING of viola muslo seriously, however. It Is said that there Is a chance that Mr. StokowBM will put the' "Harold In Italy" svmphony of Berlioz on one of his programs this jear, with Wx. Fcrlr, the new first viola of the orchestra, playing the very Important solo viola part. This Is the fourth of Berlioz's symphonies and It was com posed at tho Tcquest of Paganlnl, who wanted a composition which would ade quately show the qualities of a fine Stradlvarlus viola which he had just secured at the time. That It does not do this IS well known, but It Is probably the most elaborate piece of music ever written for this Instrument. It thows oft the powers of tho viola far better than does Itlchard Strauss In "Don Quixote," where to the solo viola the part of Sandra Panza Is assigned, the title role being taken by the solo violon cello, with occasional assistance from the solo violin, notably In Instances where the Don gets mad and his rage exceeds the tonal range ot the cello Coming Musical Events Aline van Harentsen, the eminent ouns American planlat. announce i recital In wltwripoon for.
