Francis and I are Eointr to nnd rooms together further up town. He's getting along lino with the Re . public Cutlery Company. He's tho credit manager there, you remember. , -Tho .boss of tho concern told Francis when ho went there that this regular office force were nuls, who were as de void of ideas as pigs are of fur. When the old credit manager was fired because ho couldn't hold down the job the story "Is that he used to toss up to see If he'd i give credit; heads tho customer got credit, tails he didn't. The boss, his name , Is Mills, waited a few days to see If any of his regular force asked for the Job. Not one of them came up to the mark, so Mills got hold of Francis for the Job. But I am forgetting to say why wo are j leaving Thirteenth street. You see our landlady Is a widow from Kentucky, and she decided some time ago that she wanted to go back to her people, so she t tried to tell the house, which she owns. She gave It to several real estate men, and some time ago one of them, a regu lar shyster he Is, brdbght a man to look at the place. He didn't wan to pay the top price . asked, and while tho landlady was will. Ing to take less, tho real estate guy said "No." He said tho man would pay the top price If sho held off a bit. A few days later ono of tho other real estate men brought tho same man to the hotiso. He had quoted tho man a lower prlco than the other fellow, and tho price being all right, he decided to buy and takes possession at the end of the month. He's eolne to tatfe only girls. Ills wife la a nut on "helping lono city girls." Hcnco the deal. Yesterday the poor old landlady had a fierce time. She told me about It to night. Mr. Trimmer, the first real estate man, called nt the house with a seedy looking chap, and when they were Inside tola tho landlady that sho couldn't sell tho houso without clearing his claim ! "Claim? Claim? You-all hao no claim, Mr. Trimmer," sho said. His only reply was, "Oo to It, Joe." Tho old chap, Joe. then says, "I'm put In ns a. keeper. You're summoned to court the eighteenth of next month, nnd I shal have to stay hero till then unless you pay." Tho landlady then phoned to Francis nnd asked what she could do. Ho paid: "You can't put him out, but If he goes of his own free will you can keep him out." What do you think that foxy lady did? Sho flirted with the old codger! Finally ho said: "I gotta get some thing to eat I'll not bo gone long," and put on his iat and coat, "No, dor bo gone long." the old lady said. "Y will soon be back, won't you. for I'll be expecting you?" Then the door slammed as he va moosed. It wasn't long before ho re turned, but tho catch had been put on tho latch, so he rang the bell. "Who's that?" asked tho landlady. "It's me, the keeper. Let me In hurry up I" "I think," sho laughed, "I'll stay In side and you can keep watch outside Then we'll be sure everything will bo atl right." Well, he kicked up a rare fuss but nothing doing. Bellovo me, when a woman gets real busy sho can fool a man every time.
