Good Buying Carries Leader Up to UlVi Before Mid day United Gas Improvement -Scores Fair Advance. Business Small Activity In stock trading on the Philadelphia exchange today was virtually confined to United States Steel common, which, following the course on the big board, was In extra good demand and scored an upturn of as much ns 1 points to 111, the highest level reached since the last dividend declaration nnd earnings statement were announced. This leader was higher throughout the session and, although profit-taking caused reactions several times, It held fairly steady nnd closed with a sub stantial gain. Other Issues were neglected and there were very few transactions larger than small odd lots. Philadelphia Electric, yesterday's marekt leader for home shares, did very little and was unchanged following a fractional advance. Electric Storage Battery and William Cramp certificates appeared at their last previous close quotation, and United Gas Improvement was marked up H. Ralls, although Inactive, took on a favorable appearance In llnej with that In New York as the result of announcemen t from Washington that the contract with the Government was nearlng completion. Pennsylvania advanced 14, Lehigh Valley a fraction nnd Rending Company gained . One trifling sale of Bethlehem Seel 8 per cent preferred was recorded at 104, off from the Inst previous sale price In New York. The activity of Philadelphia Electric first 6s, which were slightly lower, was the feature of tho local bond market. There was also a large turnover of Electric and Peoples Traction 4, unchanged. Liberty Loan issues were firm, the second 4s and third 4s being a little higher, but, while the first 3s sold at 100.02 on tho fv'ew York ex change, they lcmained around yesterday's level of 99.60 In the local trading und wero quiet. Shipments of bituminous coal over the Philadelphia and Reading Rail way during June, figures of which came out today, were the largest ever handled by that company. They totaled 2,140,440 tons as compared with 1,755,998 In June of last year, nnd It was stated that the increase was duo to the general movement to send as much coal as possible to the markets to help win tho war. New York, Aug. 9. The fact that Texas was dry and hot again brought In a lot, of buying orders at the opening of the cotton market, and advanced cotton prices 24 to 43 points on first tales. Other Influences contributing to the advance were the strong stock market, bujing attributed to southern mills, and the favorable war news. Later the market made further gains, selling 40 points net higher on October, but from this level reacted about 10 points. The realizing on the early advance of 48 to 56 points was absorbed on com paratively moderate reactions, and the market firmed up again. No one seemed willing to sell aggressively In the face of the unfavorable crop news from the southwest, and the encouraging charac ter of the war news. Demand was not active, but there was covering by some of the early sellers, as well as a continued scattering demand which was promoted by the dry western belt forecast and continued absence of hedging against present or prospective holdings. Prices mado new high for the day, selling some 54 to 60 points above last night's closing, December contracts showing an advance of 135 points from the low level from yesterday morning. The firtt bale of this season's cot ton from Georgia was sold at auction in front of the New York Cotton Exchange this morning- for $1000 to Samuel New burger.
