The bulletins In regard to the situation there were watched with acute Interest, and leading opera tors were not disposed to take a positive position on the market until definite Information could be obtained as to the result of the fresh Ger man activities. At the same time the necessity of arranging for -huge Income tax pay ments this week had an Influence in preventing the usual accumulation, and the market movements, which were confined to a few Issues, were generally to lower prices. United States Steel lost about 1 point, and the other steel industrials, after rallies In the morning, declined before noon and fluctuated within it narrow range during the remainder of the day. The Marine Issues, however, acted Independently of the lemalnder of the list. One house, which had been Identified with the recent upward movement, again was noted as a persistent bujer of the preferred stock, which was forced up from 102 to above 105, and Its strength caused a revival of the various reports, which had been circulated about the sale of the British lines. The spot demand for coffee the last week has been very quiet, showing little Interest in offerings. Recently, there have been fair sales reported in Santos spots and nearby a floats from local Importers to other Importers and jobbers at steady prices. The advance in marine and war runs nas aoaed considerably to the cost of importations. The last week has witnessed heavy clearances of Brazil coffee to the United States, Increasing our visible supply to 2.245,186 bags, compared with 2.171,654 bags a year ago, and 1,594,131 bags two jears ago. Trading in contracts on the exchange, ruled generally quiet and heavy during the morning, and. aside from the' moderate demand for New Orleans ac-1 count, tne marxei was without special feature.
