"00.000.000, thus bringing the total Russian credit up to Efficiency Needed in Sugar Production The sugar producers will have to brace uPp in common with other industries, to satisfy war demands. Sugar consumption always increases in wartime, and with the present war the greatest over, it can bo easily realized that the demands will be correspondingly large. The estimated crop for the United States and Cuba, the former Just coming to market and the latter almost completed, is 5,500,000 tons for this year. The estimated domestic consumption ls 3.500,000 tons, leaving an available supply for export of 2,000,000 tons. In 1916 the Allies bought 1,200,000 tens, and If they buy as much this year there wilt be a surplus of 800,000 tons. It must be remembered, however, that we, too, have an array in tho Held this year, and this will Increase tho demand for sugar, and there Is a good chance, therefore, that this surplus may be reduced by somo volume. Millions in Dividends for Standard Oil Stockholders When Judge Landls, out In Chicago, nncd the Standard Oil Company $29,000,000 lome years ago Wall street and the country at large gasped. What would happen? This was tho question on every lip. Tho only, thing which did happen was a dis solution of tho vast holdings Into a number of smaller companies; the holdings of the stockholders were not disturbed, the only difference being that they had more eggs in more baskets. These various companies have gone right on mkalng monoy. For the third quarter of the present year the dividends declared amounted to $22,. 6S.751, and for the nine months, $72,494,671. i A "Tip" That Was Misconstrued "Tips" are a familiar thing in the financial district. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. This ls a story of how a bull "tip" was misinter preted for a bear "tip," with tho result that the stock which was "tipped" sold off vthen there was every reason under tho circumstances to send It up. On Thursday afternoon Texas Company had a big decline. This decline, of course, was history after the close, but few persons In the Street knew why It had happened, the stock falling 12 points. It seems that a broker In New York received a communication from Washington to tho effect that tho Government would not fix a price for oil. He called a floor trader on tho New York Exchango on the telephone and informed him of what he had heard, adding that It was bullish on Texas Company, in which the floor trader was Interested. The floor tiader seemed to understand, but soon the stock began selling off. After tho close tho broker met the floor trader and asked him If he could account for tho stock having such a wide decline. "Why shouldn't It," said tho floor trader, "with the Government fixing the prlco of oil? Thero was every reason for it." After the two had compared notes the floor trader found that ho had misinterpreted tho broker's words over the telephone. Yes terday tho stock had a good recovery. Public Holding on to High-Grade Bonds "I havo plenty of orders on hand this morning," was the comment of the man I ger of a large investment house, "but I cannot execute them. People must be holding on to their holdings of first-class bonds on account of tho recent prices H0 .they have been bringing or these bonds are being retired for tho present. :., "The only way I can account for such a condition," ho remarked, "Is the feeling ' wnicn is in the air in regard to an early peace. "Personally," he concluded, "I am not In favor of peace under present condi tions, but I would like to see this peace feeling that Is In the atmosphere get a good knockout blow, which would bring us all to our senses." Price Fixing Fair So Far- "Wo are interested In several soft-coal operations, but not big enough to be a !, power in any way. Yet I havo no hesitation in saying that I consider $2 a ton at the mine a fair price," observed the principal member of a large brokerage house f yesterday. "Indeed," he continued, "tho price fixing by tho Government, bo far, Is certain ; to dispel any fears which have been entertained as to radical cutting In the prices of the commodities which are still to be regulated and ls bound to have a good effect ' all around." ' Republic Railway and Light July Report The report of the Republic Railway and Light Company and Its subsidiaries for the month of July has just been Issued. It shows an Increase of 461.294.79 in gross earnings for July, 1917, as compared j with those of July, 1916. It also shows a slight Increase In net earnings during the same period. , In common with other similar public utilities tho company shows a large Increase In operating expenses and taxes for the month, but this ls unquestionably due to tho , " exorbitant prices which It had to pay for coal and labor. It is more than probable j that the fixation of coal prices by the President will result in a large saving on tali Item in next month's report, unless contracts for coal at high rates are still running. . ,. After providing for preferred stock dividends, etc., there Is carried $84,221.05 . towards interest and dividends, an increase over July, 1916, of $15,405.01, leaving a balance of $30,185.60. o A The present market price of tho stock is 34 bid, 35H asked. "Do you always address your employes that way?" ho was asked. "I think so," he answered, "at least I try to." "Speaking about that," the banker continued, "an order went out from a certain Concern to its employes to cut out tho 'please' when talking over tho phone, and they did it. A short timo after a special order went out to put the 'please' in again. h first order had demoralized a big organization." "I Just read," he continued, "a circular addressed by E. E. Loomis, president of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, to all Its employes which, among other things, says: " "When we sell a ticket wo sell more than a ride. When we issue a bill of lading ur obligation extends beyond the mere movement of freight. In each case our Patrons are entitled to and must receive prompt, accurate and courteous informa- vn ana attention.' I "I find." he ended, "that 'please' and 'thank you' are magic business builders."
