Tho stock market today was another demonstration of- how unreliable Wall slrcet views are when (hey seem to ho of tho mo( positive nrnl certain character. The Street went home yesterday afternoon full of Bloomy forebodings ns to what tho result of price fixing by the Government would he. Dcflnlto state ments were mado nt that time of n rupture between Uethlehem Steel and tho Oovernment nnd the Street was prepared for an announcement of business chaos that would bring tho Industries of tho nation to a complete standstill. The violent break of yesterday, however, left no trace on tho stock market today. Instead of the selling, which hnd been looked for, there was urgent buying of stocks from all quarters, and price movements, except In a few Issues, were to higher prices. The Hethlchem stories met absolute denial and beforo the day ended confidence In tho outlook was created by reports that Judgo l.ovett. of tho Union TacUle, had been made chairman of tho Government purchasing com mission In placo of Berncy Huruch. Although these reports were not confirmed beforo the market closed, they were effective In causing sharp advances nil through the list. Marine Issues wero the first to respond to this Influence, tho preferred moving up more than 2 points to 91, nnd nil the steel Issues mado brisk gains, Bethlehem Steel rang ing from 115V4 to 117V4. and United States Steel common, which sold eaily In the day at 122?A. advancing to nbovo 124 Industrial Alcohol made n gain of more than 3 points, nnd United States Rubber, which has been sleeping for u long time, made a gain of 3 points to above 63. General Motors and Maxwell Motor were the only motor stocks which showed pronounced weakness. A feature of the bond market was the strength shown In United States Rubber Cs, which were traded In at 83' to S4'j. Large transactions wero made In Liberty Bonds at 09.56 to 99.C0. CURB LACKS UNEASINESS ALTHOUGH DISQUIETING RUMORS CONTINUE NEW YORK, Aug. 9. Reports about Government prlce-flxlng nnd assertions about peace pros pects were again current In the trading group on the Broad Street Curb, but there was no (race of the uneasiness and unscttlement which pievnlled yester day, when these reports were first circulated. It was assumed by some that this was duo to the fact that prices are generally on a low level, no response having been 'made recently to bullish developments, and there wero Indications that an oversold condition had been created on the violent decline late yesterday. A feature of the trading today was tho strength shown In Everett-Hoancy A Co., a commercial organization, which crossed 24, selling at a new high record. This presented tho llrst response In nn upward movement to tho stories of peace, as such organizations are expected to enlarge their business scope and Increase their revenue with a cessation of hostilities. War-order stocks generally showed a varying tone. Curtlss Aeroplano advanced from 46V4 to 48 nnd then reacted to 47, and Wright-Martin rose from 11 to 12U. followed by a reaction to 11. Submarine Boat sold down to 27 and Aetna Explosives was traded In nt 7' to 7'. The Independent oil stocks showed nn Improved tono, but early gains were not maintained except In n few issues. Mining stocks were Irregular. Mllford was firm, with sales at 1',; Magma sold at ,50 and Mason Valley at 7& nnd 7. Canadian Government 5 per cent notes sold down to the new low record of 97. INACTIVE NEW YORK STOCKS Following are quotations for inactive stocks listed on the New York Stock Ex change and In which there were no trans actions today. The price given Is the last previous close. The feature of trading on the PhUadelphla Stock Exchange today was further strengtn and a growing demand for ltapld Tnalt trust certificates. The Investing public ap parently sees good prospects for the Issue as the result of the confidence expressed v.ir,lnv bv Mavor Smith that the new lease was perfect nnd no further trouble was expected oer tho details. At nny rale there was a good demand for the r'llJca.t" Immediately after the opening, arid dr'nK tha first hour more than 3000 had changed hands, with the price advancing as hlgn as .12, an advance of i. Later It eased off a little, but held steady around 31. The opinion was expressed today by tnose usually well Informed In Rapid Transit mat ters that the Improvement was omy0,, ue expected, It was pointed out that, with tne earnings for the last year being about 9 per cent and with every prospect of the city nnd company officials reaching an early agreement on the new lease, the future ought to be rosy, Indeed. A representative of ono well-known brokerage house salt! that there teemed to be little doubt but that the increased demand, with the consequent advance In the price, was directly due to tho fact that the public had gained confi dence in tho future of the affairs of the transit company through tho earnings state ment and the Indications of the lease propo sition being closed at an early date. Union Traction also developed more ac tllty than usual under tho Influence of Rapid Transit's Improvement, and doubtless because of the feeling that an agieement on tho new loaMs would not long be delayed. With sales totaling more than 700 shares changing hands, the price advanced I -4 points to 46'i.
