Tho Street gathered from this showing that tho business conditions of tho country continue on the upward ldo,and tho remarks of Judge Clary, the Chairman of tho board, that ho could see no signs of a let-up made for n generally cheerful" feeling. SPECIAL NOTICES THE PENNSYLVANIA COMPANY FOIt INSURANCES ON LIVES AND GRANT ING ANNMIIES. The Board of Directors of The Pennsyl vania Company for Insurances on Lives and Granting Annuities have unanimously adopted tho following minuter The President having announced the death of JOHN CI. JOHNSON, the Solicitor and Counsel of the Company, on Siturday morning, April fourteenth, tho Board of Directors wish upon their records to make acknowledgment of his great and long-continued service to the Company, and very earnestly to express their sense of Indebtedness and their ap preciation. To do so adequately Is more than difficult. As Llvy, greatest of his torians, said of Cicero: "He who would Bpeak worthily of him should have the powers which he possessed." Born In Philadelphia April fourth, 1841, Mr. Johnson became a member of the Bar In 1863. and upon the death of Wil liam F. Judson. of the firm of Power. Wallace and Judson, with which he had studied, was chosen by the Pennsylvania Company as Its Counsel and Attorney, March 8th, 1870. John G. Johnson was then twenty-eight 3 ears of age. The legal business of the Company, and especially the Department of Trusts, was his first corporate engage ment, and this he never forgot. He be came at once an Important part of The Pennsylvania Company, and Its advance ment and success have been for nearly half a century coincident with his own. With keen receptivity of mind, and w Ith n wide and dispassionate Intellectual sympathy, he gave to eviry case pre sented to him. whether large or small, close and Incislvo attention, and It was n remarkablo characteristic that, what ever length of tlmo might have elapsed, the details of a case, once clearly laid before him, never escaped his memory or the ability of Immediate recall. Speaking with lucid conception of the law, supported by rulings and decisions of high authority, he had always at com mand a full and logical statement of the facts upon which his case was founded. To the outside observer, he seemed to rise above praise or blame. Neither de pression nor undue elation was part of his daily career. Ills great accomplishment and success came undoubtedly from Isolation, Inde fatigable work, and unswerving devotion to one s'ngle purpose and object the majesty of the Law, "Money, place, position, fame and other Idols of the tribe" had no hold on his Imagination. He led hla own. life ab solutely, and still was Inspiration to every man wnn wnom ne came in comuci. When the mildest herald by our fate allotted touched him with sudden dart. It found him unwarned, but not unpre pared, nnd ha fell nt the moment of high est achievement and In full possession of his unequaled powers. His life work had been done and was complete. By the terms of his will, Mr, Johnson requests that no monument shall be erected. He rfcedaj none, He has been hla own architect and sculptor: first by the Ineffaceable Impress which, during fifty-four years of constant work, has been made upon the legal mind and af faire of the- community; and lastly by his splendid gifts, representing the 'entire material reward and compensation which he himself received for his long service, and which he now relinquishes and trans fers to the City of Philadelphia, in which, as ho says, he waa born, and In which he has always lived. .
