WaH, - H W Ira 9 1 EXPECT HIGHER PRICES FOR STEEL Continued Demand Foreshadows Increases, in Opinion of Authorities The big domestic nnd foreign demand for steel products which has continued during the last week In the opinion of some ot tha best trade authorities foreshadows ad vances In prices for some finished articles. While It Is true that the present buying Is not quite as large ns at previous active times, thn point Is made by well-Informed Interests that In view of recent heavy pur chases the situation at this time must be considered more than satisfactory. Within tne last rew days the view has been repeatedly heard In the trade that officials of steel companies would welcome a lull for a shoit time to allow them to catch up on deliveries which have been dropping behind, not because ot any oper ating difficulties In the control of the man agements, but because sufficient cars could not be suriplled to move the products away from the mills. The storage capacity of most plants has been taxed to thn utmost, and this has caused a reduction In. opera tions. Among the products for which tho de mand has been keeping up remarkably well Is wire. These article have been pur chased freely of late and as there has been no signs of a let-up or of the demand being satisfied, there are many Interests that are rather freely predicting an upturn within a comparatively short time, prob ably a week. The general figures men- tloned'are from $3 to $5 per ton above the present quotations. Wire mills are booked far ahead and barb wire la wanted by foreign countries now a war. Further Improvement la reported In the railroad car situation at some points, no-, cording to advices received by steel com pany offlolals In this ctly, and If anything the crowded condition of some of tha steel storehouses has been somewhat relieved. But there la room for considerable additional Improvement, and from present Indications, steel men say. It will be some time before anything like normal conditions will rule. There has been no abatement in the demand for structural steel) but the ifidl Tldual contracts do not Involve M larga .tonnage on previous occasions.
