WOMAN'S EXCHANOn AND HOUSE HOLD HELPS I think the Woman's Ex change should be divided into two sections. ne devoted to questions and answers on recipes, the other to questions and nnswers on all forms of etiquette and social enter tainment, with Rdlco on every problem In social relations, not only lo nffalis In the section on cooking, I think the editor should discuss matters of proper diet for persons of various ages n?nt occupations, jiving also easily understood explanations of food values, which foods should he rved together In 'one meal, etc. offering sample menun Sha could also consider the subject of economies In cooking and In the planning of meals. Inviting sugges tlons from the reaijers. The whole section ihould be built up. as far as possible, on an Interchange of letters among readers In the second section let the editor give suggestions "on all sorts of enteitalnments and offer a small weekly prize for new Ideas. I should then eliminate all recipes from Household Helps, and devote that column exclusively to really helpful suggestions, such as you often give, on Intelligent house hold management problems of houseclean tag, use of spare time, tested household de vices, tireless cooking: In a word, scientific efficiency applied to tho home. All ques tions from readers of a practical nature, such aa are now printed at the beginning of the Woman's Exchange under the head ing "Today's Inquiries," and their answers could be transferred to this column or printed separately as n smaller department Discussions of tho problems of scientific housekeeping should alternate at regular Intervals with an article on "How to Make Tour Home More Artistic," Illustrated I consider this column of very grjat Impor tance, as most women are looking for Ideas on this subject, and It would help to aroue a more general interest in esthetic mat ters and to create real taste In home fur nishing On a certain day each week the editor might Introduce a novelty by making a Journey through the antique or "junk" shops of the city. .with nn eye to discovering all sorts of Inexpensive articles which could be converted Into really beautiful objects, and be put toa practical use at a remark ably low cost. Wherever possible, I should give prices of everything described In this department. 2. EDITORIAL I would suggest that the editor vary her usual chat with a bright little discussion on some Important topic of the times, quoting the views of prominent persons, or with comment nn tho day's news from the woman's point of view, in a vein not too heavy, yet serious enough to stimulate into activity tho opinions of her readers. There Is no reason w'hy this could not be varied with, editorials on other matter published on the Woman's Page Just as Is done by editors of other depart ments of the RvENtNQ I-EDOKn The Woman's editor could also follow the no table acts or achievements of women in all walks of llfo all over tho world, and make as much aa a whole column of brief, pointed paragraphs, noting nnd commenting upon such happenings. The editorial should give character and distinction to the whole woman's page, causing the paper to bo read and respected and chosen above all others by thousands of women, 3. I should make a special attempt to bring Into close contact the problems of the teacher nnd the parent In dealing with tho same child Teachers try very hard nowadays to get at the lndl (duality of the child, and a dne co-operation on the part of parents (now too often lacking) would undoubtedly make a marked difference In tho child, both nt home and nt school At least one day a week should be de voted to the care of Infants 4. PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF WO MAN'S WORK In the next place, I think It would be well to consider more thor oughly tho practical aspects of woman a work, by having Interviews with prom inent women, with photographs and biographical sketch, such as now ap pear from time to time, or an In terview with any woman who Is doing some thing interesting. Hut upon these Inter views should be based a sort of vocational guide, leading off with the woman who has succeeded and following it up with practical discussions of the advantages or disad vantages to a girl of selecting that par ticular profession, explaining what qualifi cations she needs to make success reason ably certain, etc. Alternating with these Interviews might well be printed brief news of women's clubs, city, State and national. From time to time each local woman's club should be particularly described, giving details of Its aims and purposes, where located and prominent members. Many women would like to affiliate with some philanthropic or ganization If they knew how to get Into touch with If 5 FASHION In the fashion department I should Introduce photographs of Philadel phia women, names gien. wearing "the latest thing."
