' Today's operations on tho Stock Exchange consisted to a great extent of a record ot bearish activities on both advances and declines. For some time after tho opening there was a show of strength alt through tho list, but, as one broker expressed It, tho bull movement ended In 15 minutes. From then on tho market movements Included numerous rallies and recessions! without much not change being shown In any Issue at the end ot the das. Bear traders took ndvantago ot absenteeism on tho board, as well as on tho Curb, and where they found stocks unprotected they employed themselves In offer ing various amounts at concessions In tho hope of reaching stop-loss orders, but were unable to Dring out mucn long stocx. "riie stanuara issues, including united States Steel common and Union Pacific, were well maintained, sometimes making moderate gains, but numerous stocks dropped sharply under "bear drives, with tho volume of business so small during the greater part of tho day ns to make tho changes of little importance. There was constant accumulation of Marine Issues, with the preferred stock eteadlly bought because of an expectation that tho reorganization plan Is about to . be published and that It will provide for a liberal payment on account of tho I accumulated dividends. Tho Union Pacific statement for the month of Juno and for the fiscal year ended Juno 30, showing a surplus of more than $7,000,000 over dividends on tho common stock, encouraged those who believe an extra or increased dividend will bo declared next week. NEW YORK, Aug. 4. Buoyancy was 1 displayed In the cotton market at the open ' Ing this momlrK. First prices wero 10 to f 1 17 points higher, July being the exception, '. thowing a gain of 6 points. Trading was j general. Liverpool, Wall street and New i Orleans buying near months. Commission , houses operated on both sides. The selling j was led by some prominent room operators, but was scattered for .tho moat part. : After the call the Supply of the near ;i months Increased and there was some profit ,j taking on which prices fell 7 to 10 points !' before the end of the first 15 minutes. Tha , strength was caused by tho runaway mar- ket In Liverpool and continued unfavorable I weather In the South. The English market at the time ot our opening showed gains I ot 22 to 23 points against expected gains j of 8 to 11H points. Private cables at j trlbuted the advance to Continental buying, i further covering of shorts, strength of ;' American markets and continued dry Weather in the Southwest. A closing decline in Liverpool seemed In f line with the impression, derived from one j of thlH morning's private cables, that the ;;. big advances abroad had been partly due to a final spurt of covering for over the !i week-end, and sentiment here became more reactionary toward the end of the first ' hour. The selling was doubtless encour agjd by the western belt forecast for partly . cloudy or unsettled weather, which sug gested that there might be Borne relief from recent drought and Intense heat, and prices eased back to within 5 or 6 points 'ot last night's closing figures.
