Vet how few make any efl'orts in this tlireOtion, while many actually destroy them with a ruthless hand. The tiine has arrived when this should eease— cttist cettse—or we will soon enough pay the penalty of our inconsideration told negligence. The Creator, in his infinite wisdom, created the birds to serve a two-fold purpose in the economy of 11a tore: lirst, to cheer man with their sweet, melodious songs and their bright and beautiful plumage; and second, to keep in check the innumerable hosts of Insects that would otherwise prey upon, to a great degree, destroy the pro ducts of the soil. 'There arc large num bers of persons whose breasts are not stirred with any pleasureable emotions by seeing the birds hop about from Match to bratich, and from tree to tree, caroling forth front their little throats the most melodious notes of praise and thank.sgiving for their existence. Any one can inn few hours (it may be done on a rainy day) saw out and nail together ten or twelve such boxes ; no matter how rough they are, but they can be planed and painted if intended to be put up near the house. Scatter them around, twenty-five or thirty yards apart, as wrens are not neighborly creatures, and different fam ilies will not agree if nearer together. The boxes for wrens should be about four inches every way; for blue-birds they may be five. If the boxes are much larger, wrens will frequently spend nearly the whole Summer in carrying sticks, and when nearly full, throwing them out again. Any one who has never tried it, will be surprised at the large number of wrens and blue-birds that can be collected about buildings or on a farm, if a suffi cient number of nest-boxes be put up. A pair of wrens are worth their weight in gold about an apiary. Or if you have Early Purplecherries—which gen erally suffer considerably from the " cherry-birds"—put a wren-box on the tree, and if a pair of wrens build in it, no " cherry-bird" or ally other birds will be allowed to come neir the tree. The large amount of good the different kinds of birds do us entitle them to our friendship and protectimi. The Benefits of Frequent Cultivation. The chief advant9ge of all tillage or cultivation is that IL impregnates or supplies the soil with air and carbonic acid, agents of utmost importance in he growth of all plants. The destruction of weeds and grass Odell choke up the crop, and steal iway the productive elements of the nil, is not a more important result of •iiltivation than the wration of the soil. Observation proves that the more thoroughly and deeply the soil is pul verized and kept line and light the more vigorous the growth of the crops and the greater the yield. The common idea that the soil must be kept loose for the roots to penetrate, is a very safe one; but usually the roots are below the soil that the plow runs through, and the trite advantage of the cultivation is in that It keeps the earth porous and lets I he air circulate through it. 'flue oxygen of the air is the vitalizing and valuable agent which produces many chemical changes In the coil, and Is almost capable of itself alone. when in mullicient quantity, of making land productive. It decomposes the mineral elements of the soil, and brings the pot ash, silicia, lime, soda, &v., into solu ble form lot(' by aid of rain water ills them directly for plant-food. It also ilecompoßes till the Vegetable Itlld 11.111111111 matter that may be in the soil and than generates carbonic acid and ammonia. Oxygen decomposes and destroys the organic forms Mall the elements ()I' the soil and produces many great changes which are unaccountable perhaps even to chemists. Theeondensation of moisture from the air is another important result in and Lo the soil, of cultivation and tillh. The air always holds water in some degree. In the hottest. and dryest Summer weather we may see it. condensed front the air on the outside id . a pitcher or glass tilled with fresh cold water. The earth living cooler than the air most or the time, and especially at night, condenses moisture from the air in the same 1111111- ner exactly, and therefore soil that, is porous and light never sullies from drought as severely as uncultivated soil. lit addition to these, there is yet an other advantage of aeration or the, soil. :mil carbonic twill exist in the air in very perceptible iorMlity, de rived from the decomposition that goes on everywhere a n d at all tittles, of ani mal and vegetable matter, and theseare absorbed by the earth, when in a proper state to do so, :\ light and well-tilled -oil admits the free passage or air, and the liner or better pulverized it is the more of these valuable elements it Will in , able to absorb and retain. 'l•he property of absorbing and ii twining all the fertilizing gases and elements from the air, and the facility with which it renews its supplies of moisture in a dry time by condensation Irian the air, depends in a large degree upon the fineness of the soil and the frequency °twilit That is to say, the mechanical condition of the soil controls its productiveness Lo a great degree, and situp from this, tw•o soils may lie identically the saute in (a)11S1.1 - Walla parts and elements, and yielding the same chemical analysis, and yet dif fer very greatly in productiveness, it follows that chemical 1111111ytik cunuut br relied .11 for determining the capaci ty of the soil, without reference to the degree of tittle.— Plinth .I.urntd, M ED ICA Y OF 51A HMI ACM.--A 1 NEW I,ECI'ITItES, ar dolly ..red let.
