Nest boxes, for wrens and blue-birds,
1111(11 already put up, should now be put
up not only around all farm buildings,
but at every house in villages. The birds

be refused. Any one can inn few hours
(it may be done on a rainy day) saw out
and nail together ten or twelve such
boxes ; no matter how rough they are,
but they can be planed and painted if
intended to be put up near the house.
Scatter them around, twenty-five or
thirty yards apart, as wrens are not
neighborly creatures, and different fam
ilies will not agree if nearer together.
The boxes for wrens should be about
four inches every way; for blue-birds
they may be five. If the boxes are
much larger, wrens will frequently
spend nearly the whole Summer in
carrying sticks, and when nearly
full, throwing them out again. Any
one who has never tried it, will be
surprised at the large number of wrens
and blue-birds that can be collected
about buildings or on a farm, if a suffi
cient number of nest-boxes be put up.
A pair of wrens are worth their weight
in gold about an apiary. Or if you
have Early Purplecherries—which gen
erally suffer considerably from the
" cherry-birds"—put a wren-box on the
tree, and if a pair of wrens build in it,
no " cherry-bird" or ally other birds
will be allowed to come neir the tree.
The large amount of good the different
kinds of birds do us entitle them to our
friendship and protectimi.
The Benefits of Frequent Cultivation.
The chief advant9ge of all tillage or
cultivation is that IL impregnates or
supplies the soil with air and carbonic
acid, agents of utmost importance in
he growth of all plants.
The destruction of weeds and grass
Odell choke up the crop, and steal

•iiltivation than the wration of the soil.
Observation proves that the more
thoroughly and deeply the soil is pul
verized and kept line and light the
more vigorous the growth of the crops
and the greater the yield. The common
idea that the soil must be kept loose for
the roots to penetrate, is a very safe
one; but usually the roots are below the
soil that the plow runs through, and the
trite advantage of the cultivation is in
that It keeps the earth porous and lets

LURLEY!
A Legend of the Rhine. A female of rare
beauty sits on the shore of the river, where the
rocks are the most dangerous, and with her
song and music charms the unwary sailors to
near her, when they meet a watery grave. The
subject la full of life, full of emotion, and is
altogether a success.
THE DISINHERITED!
A young man, through the wily influence of
some in Iris household, is deprived of a share
in his father's house. Having but sorrow as
his lot, he departs, and from a neighboring hill
lie takes his last look and farewell to the scenes
of his younger and better days. The heart fills
with deep sorrow In examining this subject no
well drawn.
THE CHILD CHRIST!

face, and divine eyes. is represented KO well
that words cannot tell half Its worth, We do
not think that any engraving has yet reached
