A WELL known clergyman was cross lag Lake Erie, many years ago, upon one of the Lake steamers, and seeing a small lad at the wheel, steering the boat, accosted him as follows: Clergyman. “My son, you appear to be a small boy to steer so large a boat.” Boy. lt Yes, sir, but you see that I can do it, though.” Clergyman. “Do you think you un derstand your business, my son?” Boy. “ Yes, sir, I think I do.” Clergyman. ” Can you box the com pass?” Boy. “Yes, sir.” Clergyman. “ Let me hear you box it.” Boy boxes the compass. Clergyman. “ Well, really, you can doit! Let me hear you box it back ward.” Boy boxeß it backward. Clergyman. “ I declare, my son, you do seem to understand your business.” The boy now took his turn question asking. Boy. “Pray, sir, what might be your business ?” Clergyman. “X am a minister of the Gospel.” Boy. “Do you understand your busi ness?” Clergyman. “I think I do, my son.” Boy. “Can you say the Lord's pray er?” Clergyman. “Yes.” Boy. “Say it.” Clergyman repeats the Lord’s prayer Boy. “Well, really, you do know it! Now say it backward.” Clergyman says he cannot do it. Boy. “You can’t do it, eh? Now you see that I understand my business a great deal better than you do yours !” Clergyman acknowledged himself beat and retired. Cold-Blooded Murder—Shooting of an Officer! A most heart-rending tragedy occur red near Centre Hill, in the neighbor hood of Col. Love’s store, on Monday last, the 25 th Inst. It appears that| on Sunday night, two young men by the name of Campbell, brothers, both re cently returned from the army, gotdrunk at Centre Hall, and during the spree lired pistols and threw stones into the .windows of our old friend, Major Nell, and committed other devellries in the neighborhood. As a matter of course, a warrant was issued for their arrest the next day, which was put into the hands of Constable Bear, with orders to take the young men into custody. In pro ceeding to this duty, the constable was attended by several other persons. Be ing on the lookout, near the store of Mr. Love, it was told the officer that the young men were coming that way, when lie quietly slipped iuto the store, hoping they would enter before they passed, and calculating to arrest them there. But they seemed to suspect all was not right, and passed by without stopping. The officer thereupon sallied out in pursuit, accompanied by his jwssc. Overtaking the young men, the constable arrested them, when one of the two drew a pistol on him. It was wrested from him, however, and he was secured ; but, during the struggle, his companion got loose, and drawing a pistol shot (he officer through the heart , and then made his escape, the others being too much horrified to make any pursuit. A reward of five hundred dol lars has been offered lor the villian’s capture. The other young man was brought to this place on Monday after noon, and is now confined in the county jail. This cold-blooded murder has greatly shocked our quiet community, and much sympathy is felt for the murdered mau and his family. We trust that the assassin may soon betaken. —JSellcfontc Watchman. grofesstoual fflanls. JJ B. BITTERS WIDE CURE ALL DISEASES OF THE SKIN! Diseases of the skin are numerous and, with but one or two exceptions, may all be traced to imparity of the blood. In many persons thin impurity; is born In the system; while others acquire it through improper treatment of scores of diseases. Under this head may be classed— Ist, Scrofula, —Tnis disease is hereditary and is transmitted from generation to generation. It is caused by a transgression of the laws of nature, both moral and physical; in other words, it Is caused by vice. Acting as a latent poison, it reduces the vitality of the blood, and weakens the depurating organs, so that ihey fall to discharge or cast out the impurities tuat axe continually generating in the system. A person physically pure acquires gonorhoea, or some other secret disease; he undergoes a course of mercury, the disease is dried up, and the patient pronounced well. Vain delusion. The complaint is not cured, its channel is only diverted. Instead of making its appearance outwardly, it acts on the internal organs, and scroiulu, which Is bequeathed from father to son. is the result. Many persons who are per fectly free from all immorality and vice are af flicted with scrofula. They are suffering for the sins of their fathers and laboring under the curse inscribed in the Bo.>k of Books. ” I will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon their children.” To cure this dreadful complaint It is neces sary that the blood should be thoroughly puri fied. all the organs of the body brought Into a healthy state of action, and the system braced up and strengthened by luvlgoratlng tonics.— Look at ihe articles used in compounding Mlshler’s Bitters; see the array of purifying and invigorating mendicaments, and say whether there is an article In the whole list of medicines that equals it. We here emphatically assert, without fear of contradiction, that MISHLEK’d BITTERS WILL CURE ALL KINDS OF SCROFULOUS DISEASES. It purifies the blood, it strengthens the inter nal organs and aids them to perform their nat ural functions, it is a stimulant and a tonic and it will cure Scrofula. 2d, Running Sores and Ulcers.—Running sores and ulcers invariably Indicate a scrofu lous taint. They are caused by the efforts of nature to discharge the impurities of the blood. Many persons afflicted witn running sores and ulcers succeeded In drying them up aud tniok they ar-cured v :ien the skin grows over the sore. They are, however, ‘‘but making bad worse,” lor the i i > ipurlties that were discharged from the system through the medium of the sore now act internally and cause innumerable diseases and often death. The only true and sure cure for all running sores and ulcers is Mishler’s Bitters, a continued and persevering use of whioh will most certainly effect a per manent cure. 3d, Sait Rheum.—Salt Rheum is a vague, in definite. though, popular.term given to al most all the non-febrfie eruptions of the skin which afflict adults. It is generally an erup tion of vesicles In small, distinct ulcers, ac companied with a smarting, tingling sensation, with a tendency to creep or spread over the ad loining surface. Mismer’s Bitters are a sure cure for this disease. 4th. Pimples and Blotches.—Pimples and Blotches on the skin are always a sure sign ol impure blood. Although never dangerous, ex cept in cuses of carbuncles, they are very dis agreeeble. Often we will see tne most hand some features rendered hideous by great blotches and pimples, and instead of the pleas ing look which should irradiate thehnman face we see nothing but disgusting corruption ; for pimples and blotches arenotnlng but the cor rupt accumulations of the system expelled through the medium of the skin. The use ot Mlshler’s Bitters' will force these corruptions to be discharged through the natural channels, and thus cures all kinds of plmplesand blotches. Ladies who desire a fair completion, free from pimples should bear this fact In mind, apr glumlitog, ©as Jilting, &t. L REMEMBER, That this Sitters',is not A Icoholic, contains no Hum or Whisky, and cannot make Drunkards, but is the best Tonic in the World. READ WHO SAYS SO From Rev. W. D.’.Selgfrled, Pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church, Philadelphia. Gentlemen:—l have recently been labornig ,nder the distressing eliects of Indigestion, ac companied by a prostration of the nervous sys tem, Numerous remedies were recommended by friends, and some of them tested, but with out relief. Your Hoofland's German Bitters were recommended by persons wiio had tried them, and whose favorable mention of these Bitters induced me to try them. I must con fess that I nad an aversion to Patent Medicines from the “thousand and one” quack “Bit ters,” whose’only aim seems to be to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon the com munity In a sly way, and the tendency of which, I fear. Is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal preparation I took It with happy effect. Its action, not only upon the stomach, but upon the nervous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have de rived great and permanent benefit from the use of a few bottles. From tUe Itov, E. D. Fendall t Assistant Editor Christian Chronicle. Philadelphia. I have derived decided benefit lrom the use of Hoofland’s German Bitters, and leel it my privilege to recommend them as a moat valua ble tonic, to all who are suffering from gen eral debility or from diseases arising from de rangement of the liver. Yours truly, E. D. FENDALL. From Rev. D. Merrigo. Fastor of the Passyuuk Baptist Church, Philadelphia. RANGES, &C. From the many respectable recommenda tions given to Dr. Hoofland’s German Bitters, I was induced to give them a trial. After using several bottles I found them to be agood remedy for debility, and a most excellent tonic for the stomach. t* rom Rev. Win. Hmith. formerly Pastor of trie Vlncenttown and Millville (N. J.) Baptist Churches. Having used in my family a number of bot tles ol your Hoofland's German Bitters, 1 have to say that I regard them as an excellent med icine, specially adapted to remove the diseases they are recommended for. They strengthen and iuvigorate the system when debilitated, and are useful in disorders of the liver, loss of appetite, Ac. I have also recommended Lhem to several of my friends, who have tried them, and found them greatly benefiolal in the resto ration of health. Yours truly, M „ _ WILLIAM SMITH, 966 Hutchinson street. Philadelphia. D From the Rev. Levi G. Beck, Pastor of the Baptist Church, Pemberton, N. J., formerly of the North Baptist Church, Philadelphia, at pre sent Pastor of the Baptist Church, Chester, Pa I have known Hoofland’s German Bitters favorably for a number of years’ I have used them in my own family, and have been so pleased with their effects, that I was Induced to recommend them to many others, and know that they haye operated In a strikingly benefi cial manner. I take .great pleasure in thus publloiy proclaiming this fact, and calling the attention of those afflicted with the diseases for which they are recommended, to these Bitters, knowing from experience that my recommen dation will bo sustained* Ido this more cheer full as Hoofland’s Bitters Is intended to benefit the affllctod, and Is “ not a rum drink.” Yours, truly, LEVI G. BECK. ■ • • « • From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge and Christian Chronicle, Philadelphia. Although not disposed to favor or recom mend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and ofleots, 1 yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus contribute to Iho benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof land’s German Bitters, preparoif by Dr. C. M Jackson, oi this olty, becauso I wm prejudiced against them for many years, under the im pression that they wore phlefly an alcoholic mixture. I am Indebted to my frlond, Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this preju dice by proper tests and for encouragement t o try them when suffering from great and long continued debility, The use of three bottles of these Bitters at tbe beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief and restor ation to a degree of bodily and mental visor which I had not felt for six months beforo. and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my frJeuddlrecflng me to the use of them. J, NEWTON BROWN Phlladelph/u. From the Rev. Thos. Winter. D. D„ Pastor of Uoxborough Baptist Ohuroli.
