Come with the glory of light and song! Earth pines for thee on a thousand shores Where the billow breaks and the wild wind roars There's a voice of wail 'mid the ancient trees Torn and tost by the wintry breeze. Gloom hath shrouded our pleasant bowers, Death hath blighted our vines and flowers, And every hour on its fleeting wing Bears away a prayer for thee, Oh Spring Come ! oh come ! we pine for thee As pines the wanderer for home, at sea ! As the captive pines in his lonely cell , For the dashing waters and the breezy dell ! We sigh for the influence that life renews, For the spell of soft sunshine and balmy dews, For the genial airs and the pleasant rain, 'To waken our blossoms and streams again. ‘,‘l come, .1 come ; I am coming back !" Thus answered a voice from the San's bright track— "l will clothe the heavens' fair face with smiles; I will call the birds from a thousand isles, Tho streams shall laugh where the violets blow, The trees exult and the laurels glow, There's not a beauty, nor bloom, nor hue, T hat the charm of my presence shall not renew..' Not so, oh Spring ! no power thou hast o'er much of beauty that's from us past,; Eyes that looked love into our's are dim, I;uices are hushed from our vesper hymn, Bright young faces have passed away, Places are vacant at full of day ; Thuu can'st hang the leaves un a thousand trees, Thou catt'st bring the flowers, the birds and bees, Thou oan'st loosen the streams and the silvery I founts, And breathe a glory o'er vales and mounts, But then can'st not restore to - our yearning arms The vanquished past with its lovely forms. ' , Yet I speak to the heart in may radiant blown Of a .`•pring that opens beyond the tomb, Where the lost and loved of the earth are found, Where the severed wreaths are forever bound, , Whore comes no dimness o'er eyes of light And the cheek of beauty ne'er knows a blight, ; There's not a beauty, nor bloom, nor hue, That the charm of my presence shall not renew: 31.tituu, lS ti. Itotiom.nk TILE BUNYAN TABLEAUX-- ;.; We find in the New Orleans Creole, the following description of the great Panorama of the Pilgrim's Progress, which is now on exhibition at Mechanic's Hall, in that city. The impressions on the mind of 'the editor aro beautifully expressed " Who, in days. of youth, has not lingered with wrapt admiration over that inimitable allegory, PH ,grim's Progress? In the toilsome struggles of after ,life, the recollections of the doubts and trials of the ;Christian Pilgrim and his final sublime victory over ',his spiritual foes and conquest of the grim monster ,lleath himself, has never been completely effaced. The poetical embodiment of all these scenes of in terest were presented to a ciowded audience at Armory Hall on Monday and Tuesday evenings. It is impossble to describe the scene so as to give our readers a full apprehension of the merits of the tab leaux ; yet we will introduce them to the pleasures we have experiem ed. On the rising of the curtain, the dreamer is seen beneath a majestic forest tree, reposing amidst a scene of exquisite loveliness. The mist rising from the valley has just been tinged with the dawning light, and its fleecy cloud, gracefully floating on the breath of morn, is in keeping with the visions pas_ sing through the mind of the sleeper. The repose and beauty of the scene fill the spectator with the most pleasing emotions, and prepare him for those which quickly follow. Successively we observe Christian in his flight, weary, tattered and beset, to the neighborhood of castle Beautiful. The scene is a vision of loveliness rarely witnessed. The reflec tion of the moonlight from the castle towers, its glim mer through the foliage of the trees, add to the artistic perfection of a landscape, which the best masters have rarely exceeded. The interior views of the castle do full justice to its name. We knew not, amid such a profusion of beaty, where to dwell or ow to particularize. But the bale ny scene, from which ChriStian ob tains the first glimpse of the celestial city—the cross where the three shining ones robe him in beautiful garments—the valley and shadow of death, with its sublime and terrible imagery—the gorgeous Vanity Fair, ivith its pomp and show, whence Faithful rose in a chariot of fire to the celestial city—present scenes which cannot be effaced from the mind. The gradual unfolding of the Eden loveliness of the river of life, presented something strange, Ira earthly, and wondrous in its beauty. Perennial flowers, smooth waters, golden fruit, green meadows, and sunny woodlands ; hero a shepherd in calm med itation attending his flock, which need no guardian ship ; there a pilgrim reclining upon the banks of the placid stream.; while, far in the distance, are seen the Delectable mountains, with genial atmos phere seemingly an embodiment around their round ed summits, are so combined as to tell the story of perfect joy and unalloyed happiness more expressive than words. We forget that this is a mere work of art—that the figures are not all instinct with life, anti the glorious visions an actual reality—and, emotions to strong to be ozpressed—an interest all absorbing—a species of fascination which cannot be described—are felt while gazing on the scene. The pictures need no explanation. We re-read the story which delighted our youth ; we insensibly become a partaker of the toils and difficulties, the obstacles and mishaps of Christian in his pilgrimage, and a sharer in his pleasures and final joys. We have no space to follow the vicissitudes of Christiana and her children in their pilgrimage, but he who can look unmoved upon the picture of the Delecta ble mountains, the crossing of the river of death, and the final scene of seraphs and angels crowning the risen saint while entering the celestial city, has nerves made of steel, and his sensibilitieis must be blunted against all that is beautiful in nature and glorious in the hopes of the future. A REMARKABLE MURDER TRIAL The Corrigan murder trial, in Westmoreland co., Pa., is one of the most remarkable that has occurred in this country since the celebrated Prof. Webster and Parkman case, in Boston. Corrigan is an old man, some sixty or seventy years of age. His wife disappeared on the 29th of September last, and has never been heard from since. Four or five days after, some bones and a part of a skull declared by professional men to be those of a human being, were found by some neighbors in a large fire which had keen burning near Corrigan's residence, in the open field. Corrigan had been ob served stirring at unusual hours. A smell came from the fire like that of an animal carcass burning. A button similar: to those worn upon a woman's night dress was found in the fire, and also one be longineto a man. Considerable blood was found in different parts of Corrigan's house, although evident attempts had been made to conceal it. All of the woman's dresses that she was known to have were found at home, in their usual place. This indicated that she had not gone away voluntarily. A person passing Corrigan's house on the night .she was last seen, heard screams coming from that quarter. A sled, having marks of blood, was found near the house, with tracks showing that it had evi dently been dragged in the night time, by a horse, near to the fire where the bones were found. Corri gan and his wife, who lived alone, were known to quarrel. He gives no satisfactory explanation of any of these circumstances. lie pretends that he gave his wife Money to go Philadelphia with, and that the bones found in the fire were old bones scraped up in rubbish which he was burning on his farm. But this is rendered improbable by the strong animal smell which Caine from the fire. After a trial of several days, and speeches both for and against the prisoner by able counsel, he was oonvicted of murder in the first degree, and senten ced to be hung. Nobody was ever found or identi fied as that of his wife. The circumstances are such as we have stated. The suppotition of the jury was from the evidence, that Corrigan had murdered hie wife, then Conveyed her body to the fire in which the bonei were found, upon the sled that was lying near his residence.— The circumstances seem to be strong in that direc tion. The disposition the murderer made of the body is most horrible, almost as much so as Professor Web stew, who, it will be remembered, cut up the body of his victim into pieces, and then burnt them in a grate in his room. But in that case Parkman's body was identified, which was not the fact here in this trial, which has created great sensation in Western Pennsylvania. WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENCE To tb'• Editor, of t • itt , •!l.,ncrr. dattll Last Monday the debate commenced on the right of the sitting Senator, from Illinois, Judge Trum bull, to hold his seat. The debate was continued on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the constitutional right of the State of Illinois, to place an inh ibiture in her constitution against the right of Judge T. was ably and manfully contended for on the part of Messrs. Stuart, Pugh, and other Senators. 'Messrs. Butler, Crittenden, Toney and others defended the cause of the sitting member,—and, finally ,late on WednesdFiy evening, the vote was taken, for the right of J ridge Trumbull t 5 ayes, against' 8 nays.— The Senate was nut full, but, from the above decis ive expression of the opinion of Senators, I am satis fied, the result would not have been changed in the majority if every Senator had been present. It is not yet known when the other disputed seat, the llon. James Harlan's, of lowa, will be called up. From what I hear, of the manner of his election, it is my opinion, that there will not be as good a vote in his favor in the Senate, as has just been giv en for the right of Judge Trumbull to hold his seat. Indeed, I shall nut be surprised to see the Senator from lowa, run to the girt, in holding on to his seat in the Senate. flowerer, the Senate will soon re move all doubt, when the question comes up for de cision. game debate has taken place in the Senate on Kansas matters, but no practical good has grown out of it. Senator Wilson still holds himself "responsi ble here or elsewhere," which ho pronounced a full dozen and a Lill' times, in his nonsensical tirade of abolition declamation, and epithets of insinuation used by him towards Gov..Toucey,—Mr. Wilson gut the worse of tho c argument, as ho went unanswered. Mr. Hale talked up to abolition tune on Wed/male) , evening pretty roundly, and, as usual with him, af ter cavorting for a time to and fro, the reading of a small extract from one of his former speeches deliv ered 28th ult. by - Senator Clay, of Alabama, Mr. Hale let down, and was as mild and amiable as a "summer morn." Mr. Halo went too far, fur he caught himself napping, and he thus caved in, and the Senate adjourned. The Kansas contested election has been reported upon in the House. The majority report, as made by the Committee on Elections, is, as 1 informed you it would be the result some time ago, in favor o f setting aside the election of Hen. Whitfield. This decision was known the day the Committee was ap pointed by Mr. Banks. So much for justice. The minority zeport favor the right of General Whitfield the lawfully elected Delegate from the Territory of Kansas, bet what care the majority of the Commit tee for law or justice, if abolition has to be subserv ed ? Not a whit. Mr. Grow, of your State is as good at declamation as the venerable Joshua. Mr. Grow spoke on the Kansas Message on Wednesday, and dealt some hea vy blows upon the President, in reference to the Kansas difficulty. The President was "much hurt" at the remarks of Mr. Grow, and is now doing pen ance at the feet of this magnus apollo of abolition in the House of Representatves. Gen. Cadwallader answered-Mr. Grow, and defended the principles and propriety of the Message of President Pierce, in an able and strong argument,—decidedly a good hit for the General, as Pennsylvania was so shamefully misrepresented in the remarks delivered by Mr. Grow. It is a well established fact, all history proves it to be true, that there are no people in the 'Union more attached to the Constitutional compact of these States, than the people of the good old key-stone State;—and, yet ; here in the house, Mr. ciruw, an abolitionist, gets warm in debate against a compact admitted in the Constitution to ebrights due the Southern States, which he denounces openly, and in a strong terms as ever fell from the great expelled Joshua. . The right to hold slaves is in the compact, —that compact is denied by all abolitionists,—con sequently the Consti ' , n of the U. States is a nullity in the opinion of all 46..litionists, no matter where they reside,—in Congret. or out of Congress they are the same, enemies of the Union and the compact that bind these states together as one fami ly. The citizens of l'..ansylvania are not enemies to the Union, thPrefure. Mr. Grow is not a fit and proper person to spelt for the State in the public councils of the nation. We hope a change from worse to better men, in the representatives of Pennsylva nia at the next general election which takes place in your patriotic State. It is a shame that the central arch of this Union, should have a "Judas here and a Judas" there, continually undermining the founda tion base of this glorious confederacy ;—but so we go. The .Tenth Legion . ' newspaper, published in Shenandoah County, Virginia, the strongest and most reliable democratic county in the State, has come out in a strong Editorial from the pen of the talented editor, in favor of JAMES BUCHANAN, as the democratic nominee for the next Presidency. This expression of opinion from that quarter of the State, in favor of Mr. Buchanan, is a pretty sure indication how Virginia stands in reference to the choice of the people of that sterling old Common- wealth.` You should, Messrs. Editors, publish that editorial, for it but confirms the opinion of my own judgment in the bold Mr. Buchanan has upon his countrynfen throughout the States. It will be an act of as much judgment as caution, for the Delegates to select a good Vice Prtidential candidate at Cincinnati, to place in nomination; as associated with Mr. BUCHANAN, (if he should, fortu nately for our party, be the man,) as the democratic nominees, so that we may go into the contest doubly armed with the best of talents and expeiLmeed Statesmen. The Eon. Jou:: SLIDELL, of Lou.siana, has been favorably named by many friends from sm. rious States, as a gentleman, eminently qualified for that distinguished position ; and, among the ma ny talented citizens of the South, no gentleman would be more acceptable to the national democracy than would the Hon. Jou:: Szinnt,L, in connection with the nomination fur the distinguis hod position of Vice President of the United States. MerAItLAND. 110.MBLI WOMEN We like homely women. We have always liked them. We do not carry the peculiarity far enough to include the hideous ugly, for since beauty and money are the only capital the world will recognize in women; they are the more to be pitied than admir ed; but we have a chivalric, enthusiastic regard for plain women. We never saw ono who was not mod est, unassuming and sweet tempered, and have sel dom come across ono who was not virtuous and had not a good heart. Made aware early in life of their want of beauty by the slighted attentions of the op posite sex, vanity and affectation 'never take root in their hearts ; and in the hope of supplyinglattrac tions which a capricious nature has denied, they cultivate the graces of the heart instead of the person, and give to the mind those accomplishments which the world so rarely appreciates in women, but which are more lasting, and in the oyes of men of sense more highly prized than personal beauty. See them in the streeet, at home, or in church, and they are always the same, and the smile which ever lives up on the face is not forced there to fascinate, but is the spontaneous sunshine reflected from a kind heart—a flower which takes root in the soul and bluetits upon the lips, inspiring respect instead of passion, emo tions of admiration instead of feelings of sensual re gard. Plain women make good wives, good mothers, cheerful homes, and happy husbands, and Iwe never see one but we thank Heaven that it has kindly created women of sense as well as beauty, for it is indeed seldom a female is found possessing both. To homely women we, therefore, lift our "tile" in respect ; the world will extend the same courtesy to beauty. San Francisco has but few plain women, but all such we intend to make life subscribers to the Gelder, Era, in view of their worth to society. "THAT COUNTRY IS THE MOST PROSPEROUS WHERE LABOR COMILS.NDS THE GREATEST REWARD." LANCASTER CITY, PA., TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH 18, 1856', Is rr So?—Somebody, we don't know who, and it makes no difference, thus warm young men to look out for the women : , Young men ! keep your eyes peeled when you are after the women ! Is the pretty dress or form attractive ! Or a pretty face, even!! Flounces, boy, are no consequence. A pretty face will grow old. Paint will wash off. The sweet smile of the first, will give way to the scowl of the tergamant. The neat form will be pitched into calico. Another and far different being will take the place of the lovely goddess, who smiles sweet and eats sour can dy. Keep your eye peeled, boy, when you are after the women. If the little dear is cross, and scolds at her mother in the back room, you may be sure that you will get particular fits all around the house. If she apologizes for washing dishes, you will need a girl to fan her. If she blushes when found at the wash-tub with her sleeves rolled, up, be sure, sir, that.she is of the codfish aristocracy, little breeding and little sense. do keep your eye peeled, boy when you are after the women !" American Superiority In alluding to the diplomatic abilities' of the American and British Ministeys, as elici ted by the correspondence recently sent iu to the :lienate, the Washington correspondent of the Wilmington (Del.) Gazette, of the 3d says: . . One fact, of which every American should be proud, is clearly developed in the corre spondence between the officials of our country and those of Ureat Britain relative to the Con veution o f 1850, or the Clayton-Bulwer Trea ty. It is the vast superiority of Messrs. Mar cy and Buchanan to Lord Clarendon and Mr; Crampton. Bold, honorable and fair argu ment characterize the documents of the Amer ican Minister and Secretary of State, while miserable subterfuges, diplomatic trickery and inexcusable procrastination mark the course of her Majesty's Secretary of Foreign Affairsand resident Minister at Washington. More than a year since Mr. Buchanan wrote to Mr. Mar cy, that in a conversation with Mr. Claren don, his Lordship said "tlmt it might be de sirable to have the opinion of a third power on the true construction of the Clayton-Bul wer Treaty." As verbal communications are u.tt, and should not be respected by our Min isters when they relate to iruportaut questions, Mr. Buchanan paid no further attention to it, until the second of November last, when Clar endon, still verbally, repeated the conversa tion. At this time Mr. Buchanan jocularly remarked, "that the Emperor of Russia was the only }tower sufficiently independent to act as an impartial umpire, and Great Britain had gone to war with him." Thus the matter stood until Lord Claernd in stated in Parliament that lie long siuce made such proposition to the Minister of the United States, and on the tenth of the same month, November, had written to Mr. Crampton to communicate the same desire to the American Secretary of State. Mr. Crampton duly re ceived the dispatch, as his letter to Mr. Mar cy, of February 27th shows, but for reasons which a child should be ashamed to give, did not communicate it to Mr. Marcy Thad nuNn , (flednesduylust. This delay is both unite countable and inexcusable, unless it be from a desire on the part of the British government to settle their difficulttes with Russia before entering into any controversy with the United States. I only hope they may do so, for then Russia will be an impartial umpire, and ready to stand by the right side in the event of ne cessity for foreign sympathy or aid. rte., A rich old spinster who died at New ton, N. 11., lately, left $38,119.
