ThaJElectro-AutemaUc Transit company, of Baltlmerchas nn experimental two alia track In Unit city en which they have moved small train at the rate or two mllea a minute, using the patents of David O. Weems. New- the same company are applying for right of way te build a flve mlle circuit at Oarden City, L. I., and the Inventor premises that witliin six months he will have a train running at the rate of fire miles in ene minute. The llvo-mlle-a-uilnute railroad Is te have a track built en the ground, Just like an ordinary track, except that the mils have a wlcle UaiiRe projecting from the inner side, A shoe defending from the car reaches under this tlange, and when when ever the car tilts the shoe touches the flange and prevents the car from leaving the rails. The motive power is te be electricity, a low-tension, direct current of 250 horse power, supplied bvnn overhead conductor, berne net upon poles, but upon a succes sion or frames arching the track. This framework will cover the track for its entire length, and barbed wire will be strung along it te keep cattle and ether animals off the track. It will rcsomble from the outside a long grope arbor. The barbed wires will be Insulated, and may be used for telegraphing. The HT patents which Mr. veems has obtained Include several for using tbe rail themselves as conductors. The meter will weigh about three tens. Tbe most novel feature electrically of the Invention Is the fact that the electricity acts directly upon the driving w hcels, the nxlcs or the wheels being used as the core of the meter. This overcomes the difficulty which has heretofore prevented the attain ing of a greater bpccxl than twenty iniles or senn hour by nn electric meter. Mr. Woenis says that the meter he lias been using at Laurel, lifted from tbe track, but with the Journals welghted te compensate for the relief given them, has been run up te 3,500 revolutions a minute without in Jury. The wheels of the Oardcn City meter will be 42 Inches In diaincter, and at 2,000 revolutions a minute, therefore, will make the circuit of the flvc-mlle grape arbor in Just ene minute, If nothing breaks. The current will be communicated te the meter by means of a small brush sliding along the conductor everhead, The con tact win ue very sngui anu me incuen small. The wheels of the meter, aud of the cars also, will be inside, aud the only projections will be the Journals of the whoels en each slde. These have te be very wide, te pro pre vent heating, and will be encased in shell llke boxes te rcduce the rosistnnce te the air as much as possible. The meters and the cars will be telescoped together at the ends when coupled, se that the whele train will, leek as If made in ene plece. Besides tills, the front of the meter and the rear of tlie last car will be built out te a point, be that the tralirwlll slip through the air like u. vessel "through the water. By an in in puieiis arrangement thf front point can be raised or lowered, varying the upward or-dewnwatcl prossure of the air and lightening or Increasing the pressure en the Tails. The automatic train will carry no pas sengers or ompleyoi. It will le controlled entirely fi em the gencrattug station. The moment the current Is broken the brakes are applied. They will step the train, when going flve miles n mlnute, in 1,000 feet, Mr. Weeuis says. The brakes stay set until the current begins nguln. The passigoef the train rings a bell at tha station, and drops a tag llke that of a hotel nuuuncUter every lnlle or se along the route. The man nt the station can thus always tell Mry ncaily where It, Is. If It has te cress'a drawbridge, the opening of the draw will break the current, and the train will be stepped nnd cannot go en until the draw is closed. The cars will carry a ion each of ex press and mall. They will be munlng from New Yerk te Philadelphia within two years, If the Jcrsey Legislature doesn't object, Mr. Weems says, and will make the run In twenty minute. Theoretically the train could run from 2few Yerk te Chicago in six hours. The train that will niake this terrlAu speed will be only about 1 feet high, and the cars will be from 20 te 30 feet long. The cauge will be correspondingly narrow. All that is contemplated at first is the use of the system as an adjunct te the present railroad system for the swift carrlagoef ex pi 093, mall, and ether light goods. Mr. Weems also has patents for a system for passenger .carriage. At present, he says, the system would net be practlcable for short distance rapid transit, becaitse te be perfectly safe from breaking down the meters must be started comparatively Blew, and reach their regular speed gradu ally. All Mr. Weems efforts have been concentrated upon getting a machlne that would go fast for long distances. It is said that the track will cost about 8.3,000 a mile, and that for 812,000,000 a line eeald be built and equipped from Kcw Yerk te Chicago. Thore will be two tracks at Garden City, ene within the ether ; the first ene completed will be used for the au tomatic system. Passongers will be car ried en the ether. feolf-Defense Acnlnut n Dausoreus Fee.
