' The conviction of young 1'earre in Bal Bal raere for attempting a felonious assault upon Mrs. Kirkland in n RaUimore hotel, following as it dec3 se quickly en the heels of the Beventeen years sentence; of Ser geant Crowley, in New Yerk, and the death .sentence of Heward Cooper, the Maryland negre ravishcr, is proof patent that the rights of the weaker box are safely entrusted in the hands of a male jury. By nature man was framed mere sturdily than woman, that he might be her defender in time of peril. "When man endeavors te use that superior brute ferce with which he is endowed te accomplish an unholy purpose, It is fitting that a jury of his fellows should sit upon his case and mctoeut stern justice te him. As true men recognizing the God Ged given relations of the sexes, they sce clear ly the enormity of the effense and under stand best hew it should Iw avenged. With the Pearre jury it made hut little for the prisoner's case that the plaintiff was a woman whose reputation was alleged te be under a cloud. Granted, what was by no means ndmitted, that she may have over stepped the bounds of virtue in her career, she was entitled te all that protection which the lawsef society guarantee te each of its individual members. The jury brushed aside the legal cobwebs spun by the prisoner's counsel in his behalf, and saw simply the privacy of a woman's room invaded by an assailant in whom sensual passion had for the time obtained supre macy ever reason. The jury did well te find him guilty of assault, and as the pen alty of his crime is frreu- live te eighteen years, he will proiablyi'Ave leisure te ro re fiect thaynorafi'reemude, apart from any religious considerations, is after all the jestpelicy. But It is net the vengeance that over takes the particular offender which the law most leeks at in crimes of this description, but rather the lessen of terror te evil doers that is burned in letters of fire en the minds of these who might feel tempted te go wrong in the same way. This vindicatory part of the law is its best portion in the prevention of like offenses in the futuie. Therefore it is when the Tearres, the Coopers and Crowleys are made te suffer for their crimes, the public may well re re re joiceeot that individuals are made te suffer, pain, disgrace or discomfort, but be cause the majesty of the law has been avenged. The subject was referred te net te dis credit Beaver's head or heart, but te show that he lacks intelligence or sincerity when be new declares that he cannot stand an ex-Confederate in a consular place.
