' The conviction of young 1'earre in Bal Bal
raere for attempting a felonious assault
upon Mrs. Kirkland in n RaUimore hotel,
following as it dec3 se quickly en the heels
of the Beventeen years sentence; of Ser
geant Crowley, in New Yerk, and the
death .sentence of Heward Cooper, the
Maryland negre ravishcr, is proof patent
that the rights of the weaker box are safely
entrusted in the hands of a male jury. By
nature man was framed mere sturdily than
woman, that he might be her defender in
time of peril. "When man endeavors te use
that superior brute ferce with which he is
endowed te accomplish an unholy purpose,
It is fitting that a jury of his fellows should
sit upon his case and mctoeut stern justice
te him. As true men recognizing the God Ged
given relations of the sexes, they sce clear
ly the enormity of the effense and under
stand best hew it should Iw avenged.
With the Pearre jury it made hut little
for the prisoner's case that the plaintiff was
a woman whose reputation was alleged te
be under a cloud. Granted, what was by
no means ndmitted, that she may have over
stepped the bounds of virtue in her career,
she was entitled te all that protection
which the lawsef society guarantee te each
of its individual members. The jury
brushed aside the legal cobwebs spun by
the prisoner's counsel in his behalf, and
saw simply the privacy of a woman's room
invaded by an assailant in whom sensual
passion had for the time obtained supre
macy ever reason. The jury did well te
find him guilty of assault, and as the pen
alty of his crime is frreu- live te eighteen
years, he will proiablyi'Ave leisure te ro re
fiect thaynorafi'reemude, apart from any
religious considerations, is after all the
jestpelicy.
But It is net the vengeance that over
takes the particular offender which the law
most leeks at in crimes of this description,
but rather the lessen of terror te evil doers
that is burned in letters of fire en the minds
of these who might feel tempted te go
wrong in the same way. This vindicatory
part of the law is its best portion in the
prevention of like offenses in the futuie.
Therefore it is when the Tearres, the
Coopers and Crowleys are made te suffer
for their crimes, the public may well re re re
joiceeot that individuals are made te
suffer, pain, disgrace or discomfort, but be
cause the majesty of the law has been
avenged.

The Harrisburg leleyruph and Lancas
ter Examiner knew that the Intellioen Intellieen
cer neither makes, lies nor " hangs te "
any statement which it has reason te le
lieve is erroneous..
Having stated, us a matter of recollec
tion, that Gen. Beaver ence said at Car
lisle te a company of ex-Confederates that
" he hardly knew which side in the war
was right," we most cheerfully and
promptly printed the Tehyntph's report of
what he really did say, which was in effect
that from their standpoint the Confede
rates did what they believed was right, and
what he would have dene in their place.
The subject was referred te net te dis
credit Beaver's head or heart, but te show
that he lacks intelligence or sincerity when
be new declares that he cannot stand an
ex-Confederate in a consular place. It may
be a question whether Beaver said or
meant mere or less than we originally as
cribed te him ; but we incline te think no
one who were the gray would ask for a
mere complete vindication than he gave
them. hi his Carlisle speech, which new,
when the turf en the war graves is se
much elder, he seeks te repudiate.
As for his Harrisburg organ,it is net just
exactly the journal te set up as an instruc
tor in decency or a professor of journalistic
ethics.

TKe Pbolau-Shert juryman.whem a New

the premises, shows himself te be a high
minded and sensitive man by declining te
receive the contributions offered te pay his

of a penalty upon him.
He Is a man of courage, as has been
demonstrated by his military recerd,havIng

hard-fought battles, and a short experience
behind jail bars for what he conceived te
be an efficient and conscientious discharge
of duty has no terrors for him.
But it is possible that there is sonie de

been excited by his case, might be profitably
directed te a reform of the statutes.

Yeung Thnddeus Stevens was the favor
ite relative of his mere illustrious uncle of
the Bame name. Fer him, probably mera
than any ether person, that grim old man
cherished n fend attachment ; and of him
he spoke witli a tenderness that he exhib

memory of his mother.
It is noted in our local columns te-day
that te the government application was
made for a tombstone te mark the gravoef
young Thad., and that the memorial has
just been received out of the nation's
bounty, and will be set up ever the hith
erto unmarked resting place of Thaddcus
Stevens' nephew.
It will occur te many people that the
executers of Thaddcus Steveils, of whom
Edward McPhcrsen alene survives, ought
te haYe attended te this years age. Know Knew
ing, as they did the relations between their
testator and his relative nud legatee, they
might reasonably have supplied this memo

The orphange which Stevens' will pro

resldue of his estate is said te net yet reach
50,000, and likely it never will ; the biogra
phy of Stevens, which his literary executer,
Mr. McPherson, was te have prepared,
has never been published ; and new the
government has te send en a tombsteno

" Alas I" said Rip Van Winkle, " hew

Hindsight and Foresight.
The Recerd felicitates itself that it dis
covered and said as early its last January
that Gov. Hill, of New Yerk, would net
de.
After that the ltccerd pronounced a still
mere unfavorable judgment upon Secretary
Manning, and said that for Mr. Cleveland
te appoint such a secretary of the treasury,
whose resources were " chielly abdominal,"
would 1)0 as fatal as for a swimmer te girdle
himself with a coil of gas pipe.
And yet Mr. Manning was apieliitcd.
He seems te be thcre te stay. The admin

It is easy te be wise after the event.

An alarmist xtatlHtlcian from the Went,
Ilov. Dr. 11. II. Alien, declares that at the
present rate of Incroase thore will be In 19W,
00,000,000 wlilte poeplo and 192,000,000 colored
people. He basen liis oatluiate en the asser
tion that twenty years age thore wero 3,017,
000 colored poeplo In the Soutliern states ;
whlle te-day thcre are inore than 7,000,000
On this basis he inaket the preposition, that
the colored population doubles overy twenty
years; whlle the whites require tlilrty-ilve
years for the sane result This Is exactly
what is uel the case. Any one who will leek
at the census figures from 1790 te IbfiO, will
800 that the whole population, then having
but an Inconslderable portion of the negre
oletnent in it, kept steadily a llttle less than
doubling Itself overy scere of years. Frem
1800 te 18S0 thore Is a marked falling oil' due
te the wholesalo less of life in the war. The
imputation In 1800 was 3i,4i:!,3'Jl, and It
should have been G0,000,000 in 18SO, but fell
10,000,000 short chielly for the reasons noted.
All physicians testify te the fact that the mor
tality among colored jicople Is much
greater than that among the whites.
As comparatively few of the negre
race risked their lives in the war, thelr
statistics appear te letter advanUge from a
couiarisen made of the whlte and colored
poeplo for the past twenty years. Hut the
true situation and the falsity of Allen's con
clusion are apparent when the facta are con
sidered. ASSISTANT PeSTMASTEn GKNKllAL IlAV,
who new has much te de with that genus or
man entitled olllce-seokor, reports that the
smaller the olllce sought utter, the longer the
speech. Most people ilnd that the littlest
things in llfe give the most trouble.
It is mero than probable that the difficulty
about getting the inoney needed for the com
pletion of the Ilartheldl iwdestal will selve
itself in its own geed tlme. The fund started
by the New Yerk World, has reached nearly
$00,000, and as the days and weeks wear en
it shows no signs of feebleness. The death
of Victer Huge and the unstinted praise be bo
stewed en him by Atnerican Journals will
have a tondency te bring mero clearly bofero
the iiepular mind the Intent of the Ilar Ilar
teoldl gilt ; namely, te bind mero clesely the
chains of friendship between two great
peeples. It will be an exhibition of the
most abject llttloness if when the splendid
statue arrives, the fund for the completion
of the pedestal shall still be locking. This
state or allairs Is fortunately almost impos
sible. Fer when the magnilicent Goddess of
Liberty comes, thore will be such a wave of
popular enthusiasm evor her that any
needed funds will pour In rapidly. It will
no vor be said of the goncreus citizens of the
United States that they pormitted sosplendld
a gift te go te wreck for want of a pedestal
en which te place her.
