The governor signed the bill yesterday as seen as it reached him, and immediately messaged his approval te the Heuse, where it was received with applause en the Democratic side. The bill takes effect immediately. The Souate passed it in its original shape, having unanimously stricken out, ou motion of Iteyburn, the Heuse ameudmeut transferring te the clerk of quarter sessions the duty efap proving the liquor license bends. Itey burn argued that net only was the amend ment unnecessary, but it also raised a questien as te the constitutionality of the bill. After the abolition the approval of the bends would be dene, he said, by the clerk of the quarter sessions, as had been the case prier te the passage of the act of 187i, which gave the recorder a baud in tbe approval, se that his emoluments would be increased. The bill having passed the Senate the Republican side gave up the idea of con firming William H. Smith, although they might have enacted the farce before the bill get back.te the Heuse for concurrence in the change. When the bill reached the Heuse Frank lin Hall, its father, moved te concur. Me Reynolds and Ammerman. Democrats, op posed this, Ammerman declaring that the striking out was a trap te catch the JJem ecratic Heuse. He feared that if no pre vision were made for the license thin reform bill would strike a snag. Sharpe, Democrat, and Niles, Republican, ex pressed views like Kevburu s and adve catcd concurrence. Crawford backed them up. There were 1G5 votes for and only 14 against concurrence. Abbett and Builitt were the only Philadelphians voting against it. franklin Hall ejaculated : " Requicscat in pace." "Hughey, what did Hall say?" inquir ed Ammerman of Mackin. "He said yen were a homeeopathies lawyer," quickly answered Mackin, the Heuse laughing at Amerman's failure te draw Mackin into another vex pepuli, vex dti translation. XnE OUUttUH CONVENTIONS. Van Vorst offered reso lutions of respect te the memory of Judge Geerge Sharswood, a lay commissioner from the Philadelphia presbytery, te the assembly. The temperance committee made its report and after amendments offered by Rev. Dr. Herrick Jehnsen had been carried, declaring against prohibition as a distinctive measure, but bailing with joy and thanksgiving the efforts te check in temperance aud the sale of intoxicating beverages by the power of the Christian conscience el public opinion and the strong arm of the law, the report was adopted, the vote of two-thirds of tbe assembly being favorable te Dr. Jehnsen's amendments. The amended book of discipline was then adopted as a whole and sent down te the presbyteries. A resolution of Dr. Herrick Jehnsen was adopted that the general assembly shall unite with the Episcopal gcneral convention and the Methodist general con ference in asking the United States gov ernment te preserve faith with the In dians; te grant them lands in severalty; te prevent intrusions in the Indian territory and reservations, aud that the matter be presented te President Arthur and tbe secretary of the interior by the special committee ou a civil government for Alas ka. Dr. Heward Cresby said that he had presented a. similar petition in a former committee and had been snubbed twice by the officials and he had no desire te again present it. He moved that he be excused from serving en the committee and that Dr. Jehnsen be appointed. He was accordingly excused aud Dr. Jehnsen was named in his place. The report of the committee en narra tive showed a favorable state of religion in regard te the financial condition of the churches and the growth of Christian activity and beneficence. The matter of the proposed transfer of the Danville sem inary te the care of the Southern church, was confided te a joint committee te be appointed from both assemblies.
