F KNIGHTS TEMPLAE. rail ANCIENT OBDER IS LOKDuX An Kxtract Frem " Addison' History of the Knights Templar " That has Timely Interest. The origin and history of the celebrated Order of Templars are tee well-known te need recapitulation in connection with seme accounts of their chief establishment iu England, of which the famous Round Church in theTetapler marks, the culmina ting period of the Knight Templars in England. In the year 1138, the head of this new and strange society, which had excited much notice among the pious and warlike of England, arrived ia Londen te explain its objects. Ha narrated te Kinj Henry 1, and his Court the origin aud pro gress of the order, hew he himself and eight ether Knights, calling themselves, 'peer fellow-soldiers of Jesus Christ" entered into a solemn compact te derote their lives and fortunes te the Christian pilgrims te Jerusalem, by the defence of the highway from the iuieads of the Mu3 selmaiis, and the the ravages of the num erous robbers who infested it. They en larged their object te the defense of the Christian Kindem of Jerusalem itself. Hugh de Paycns was made Master, and set out from Jerusalem with four brethren he leturned after his visit te England, with 300, chescti principally from the noblest families of Franca and England. But Matthew Paris tells us they at lirst lived upon alms, aud were se peer that one horse served iice of them (Hugh de Payeus ami a companion), as we see iu their ccal ; yet they suddenly waxed se iuseient, that they disdained ether orders, and sorted themselves with nobleman. Itcfoie Hugh de Payens left England, he placed a Knight Templar called the Piier of the Temple, at the head of the Society in this country, te -nanage the estates aud allairs of the Order. Nu merous Templar establishments new sprung up, the chief el which was in IJolbern, where Southampton ITonse was afterwards erected, and a hall of which existed te our day, with traces of au ancient, circular chapel. As the English Knights increased iu number and wealth, they put chased the site of the piesetit Temple, in thejiear or the leuth side of Fleet street, and set about erecting tlieir magnificent round church, after the model of that at Jerusalem. Meauwhile, the mMlbrtuues or tbe Templars in Palcstiue brought te Europe for assistance Heia clius, the patriarch, the Mastecef the Temple, aud the Master of St. Jehn's. New, Henry II, premised them assistance, ea receiving absolution for the murder of lieckct. The Master of the Temple died ou the way, the ether two reached Eng land iu 1185. King Henry met them at Reading ; iu tears he heard their supplica supplica catiens for assistance, and premised te grant it. The Englibli Templars brought Her.ie lius te their cliurnh, and requested him te eotisccrate'it. Te this he consumed, as lecerded in au inscription ; ami at the ssuii! time ceuseciated tue church of the rival society of Hespitallers, or Kiiijlits of St Jehn, at CIcrkenwell. Iieraelia-.' de uiands for succor wp: hewev r, evaded bv the king aud his parlia iieut, aud the patriach's mission altogether failed. . The Temple church is one of the four circular churches in England ; the ether three existing at Cambridge, Northamp ton and Maple:-tej.d, in Es-,ex. Tin: arch itcetuie is midway between Hem.tiisqua urn! Upen the pavement are figures of crusaders," iu eiess-h-gged cliigy devoutly stretched," but originally pi iced upon altar tomb ai.d pedestals. Tues ) eiligicics of- feudal w.utiets are sculptured out of free stone. The attitudes of all are diilVieiit, but they aie all recumbent with the legs crossed. They are incomplete mail with with stir coats ; one only is bareheaded, and has the the cowl of fi monk. The shields arc of the heater or Neruiau shape, but the size is net the satne iu all ; ene of them is very long and reaches fiem the sheultlcV te the middle et the leg. Their heads, with one exception, repose en cushions, and have heeds of ma:!. Three of them have llatish helmets ever the armor, and ene has a sort of a casque. The best authorities assign iive of them as fellows : te Geoffrey de Magnaville, Eirl of Essex, A. I). 1144, (right arm en his lire.ifd and large sword at his right), he is net. mentioned bv Weever : William Mareschall. Earl of Pembroke. A. I). 124e (head uncovered with long Hawing hair), whose effigy N slid te ' have- been brought, from Helmsley church, Yorkshire. Will iam Marccshall, jun , K-i! ei Pembroke 12:51 (with lien rampant ou shield and sheathing his sword). Gil bert Mareehall, carl of Pembroke, (draw ing his sword winged dragon at feet). In 1811 were discovered the ancient lead coffins containing the bedias of these kuights, who did uefc appear te have been buried in their armor ; and none of the coffin ornaments were of earlier date thau the beginning of the thirteenth ceutnry. The ancient hostels existed until 1H4G (20th Edward III.), wucn the Kuights Hespitallers of St. Jehn of Jerusalem (te which the fei foiled estates of the rival brotherhood of the Templars had been granted by the Peps) demised the mag nificent buildings, chuich, gardens, "and all the appurtenances that belonged te the Templars in Londen," te certain students said te have removed thither from Hol Hel born, in which part of the town the Knights Templar themselves had resided before this erection of their palace en the Thames. In this new temple, 'out of the city and the noise thereof, aud in the suburbs," between the king' court at Westminster and the city of Loudeu, tha studious lawyers, lived in quiet, increasing in number and impoitauce ; se that although the mob of Wat Tyler's rebellion plund ered the students, and destroyed almost all their books and lccerds ("Te the inns of court! down with them all!" Zack Caile), it became necessary te divide the inn into two separate bodies, the Hen. societies of the Inuer and Middle Temple ; having separate halls, but using the same church, and holding their houses as ten ants of the Knights Ilospitallers until the dissolution by Henry VHL, and thence forth of the crown by lease. This was done in the sixth year of James I ; and the two temples were granted as the Inner and Middle. Thus, for uearly live centuries, seme of the leading practisers uf the country have been ssttlcd upon the spot where tUe) lawless Knights Templar lem: held sway. Mho circular cuurcu anu Iits appurtenances were then leased for au annual fee farm rent of 10Z te the stu dents. The preacher is styled Master of the Temple, a3 was the Lord paramount of the Templars ; the early lawyers had their pillars in the church and cloisters a fall ing off from their spiritual predecessors ; and the Middle Temple still bears the arms of the Knights Templar Arg. en a cress gu., a paschal lamb, or carrying a banner of the first, charged with a cress of the second, such as we see iu university towns lowered te the Lamb and Flag pub lic house sign ; whilst Pegassus, salient of the Inner Temple, long enjoyed a similar distinction iu becoming a popular Londen sign. This winged horse, with the motto "Velatad asthera Jvirtus,"was substitu ted by the Inner Temple for the Hely Lamb early in the reign of Elizabeth. There has bceu much amusing speculation upon the cause of the chauge ; it is thought te have been intended te signify in allusion te the fable of Pegassus forming the fountain of Ilippocrena by striking the rock that the lawyers as pired te be peet3, In the Temple Round lawyers leccivad clients as Merchants en 'Change : " ifctalu all sorts el witnesses. That ply i' ttie Temple under trce : Or walk the Round with Knights e' the Pests. About the cress-lcgg'd knlglils, their hosts." LTuilibras pt. ziL, c. 3. Dugdale says . Item, they (the law yers) ha7e no placa te walk in and confer their learnings but 'the church ; which place all the term times hath iu it no mera quietness tWii tha Pervise of Paulea, bj' occasion e! the confluence and conceursa of such a ,are suitors iu the law." "The Reund'' i.- the nave or vestibule te the oblong portion of the church, the choir, iu pure Liucet style, and almost rebuild iu our time. It is divided iute three aisles by clustercd marbled columns, the ground reef being i ichly colored in arabo-que aud ornament ed with holy emblems; .white tiiple lancet headed windows let iu floods of light. It is mentioned iu Dugdale'tsiMcMasffCen that both Kiug Henry II. aud his Queen Eleaner directed that their bodies should bs interred within the walls of the Temple Church, and that the above monarch by his will left 500 in irks for tint purpose. The walls aie inscribed with scripture texts in Latin ; and belwcea the top of the stalls aud the string course between the windows is the hymn of St. Ambrose. The windows, by Willemont, are among the finest specimens of modern stained glass ; the altar subjects are from the life el' Christ, the interspaces being deep blue and ruby mosaic, with glittering borders ; Knights Templar fill the aisle windows, but that opposite the organ has figures of angels playing musical instruments. A brief history of the Templars in Eng land and of this church may be read in tbe inde effigies of the successive kings during whose reigns they flourished, new painted en the west- end of the chancel. At the south corner sits Heury I, holding the first banner of the Crusaders, half black, half white, entitled -'Beauseant;" white typifying fairness towards friends; black, terror te fees. This banner was changed dining the reign of Stephen for the red cress : ' And en his breast a bloedie cress he bore. Tins deir remembrance of his dying Lord." Ilemy H. and the R juud Church are repre hented by the third figure. Richard I. with the sword which he wielded as Cru sader, asid Jehn, his brother, are the next kings; and iu the north aisle is pirtrayed Henry III., holding- the two churches; the chancel, or square p.nt, li.ivlng been added iu his reigit, and cenvcr.ited en Ascension day, 1240. Among the rule.; for the government of the Order of Tcmplass was that of ebedi cuci, for breach of which was the peniten tial cell," already uisutioaed; it was form ed in the wall of the church, audmeasuicd only four and a half feet in length, ami two aud a half in breadth, se thai the un happy prisoner could net lie down, except by" drawing his limbs togethor. Others were f.ttered by order of the master, and left till tV.y died by the severity of the punishment. Besides imprisonment, they wnre scourged en the shoulders by the m.istcr's hands in the hall, or whipped iu the church en Sundays before the congre gation. The Orders bicame highly popu lar ler their piety, bravery aud humility, and great men desired te be buried among thjin. This was insured by lauds, manors and privileges, and sometimes money. King Jehn dopesitcd hituMiIf iu the community, and . numeietu documents of fiii kitiji'j are dated from the Temple Martit, the pope's nuncio, made unheard of extortions et money aud valuables' Tim abbots and priers were told that they must send him rich presents desirable palfieys, i-uuiptueus setvices for the table, aud rich clothing. The treas ure dopesitcd in the temple must of i en have been immense, aud here were brought, all the moneys collected for the Christian service in Palestine. The gieat carl of Kent, Hubein de Burgh, en his disgraee and committal te the Tower, was suspected by the kiug te have no small amount of treaMiin deposited in the Tem ple: the kin ' demaudu.l of the Master of the Temple, if it was se ; wheu he con fessed that he had money of the said Ilrtbcit, adding that he could net give i' up without the consent el the ownei. Then the kiug sent the Treasurer of his Court, with tbe Justices of the Exchequer, ie Hubert, who was in fetters in the Tewer, that they might exact from him an assignment of the tha entire sum te the king. Hubert submitted .and sent te the king the keys of his treasury iu thoTemp'e which the kiug ordered te be ceunta d and placed in his treasury, and the amount reduced into wiiting and exhibited te him. And there were "found deposited iu the temple geid and silver vases of in estimable price, aud money, and many prcciffiis gems, au enumeration whoree would, ia truth, astonish the hearers." t-cGtriictliiu of Property.
