Mr. .Tames Fiddler, a brakeman en the Pennsylvania railroad, had the big tee of his right feet mashed yesterday, while shifting eais at Hestouville. The lever of a switch fell hack and striking bin feet resulted iu the abeve injury. He was brought te liia bearding house iu Coluni bia, wheie Dr. Craig attended him. Mrs. Geerge M. Mrs. Emma Weiser has formed a literary class out of her Sunday-school class, and holds meetings at her home once in every two weeks. It is net only a pleasant but profitable amuhemcut. A number of Lancaster boys visited our town last evening and had an enjoyable trip. Hi Henry's treupe passed through Col umbia this morning, en route for Potts Petts Petts ville, where they play this evening. Since Monday twenty-four beats have been leaded and sent away from the Read mg & Columbia wharves. 'The Sliail Fisheries. In consequence of the highness of the river, hhad fishermen are meeting with but peer success. The water is entirely tee hi.'li. A few of these fish are still being caught, but if the river continues lising as it is new, a few days moie and shad fishing will clese until the water recedes. This year has been a decidedly peer one for Columbia fishermen. Luck has been dead against them. When the water is low enough te fish then it :s tee cold, and when it is warm enough it is tee high. Besides this shad have been very scarce this -year. The fishermen who use dip nets im-tead of .seines, are making the most money. Usually it is the reverse The largest "catch" made se tar this season was made at the battery near Mud island, two hauls landing oighty-enu shad. A Uanie or Baseball. The fiist game of baseball played in Columbia this year was played en the P. R. R. " dump " ycsteiday afternoon, between two picked nines. It took two hours Wi play five innings, at the expira tion el which the score was as fellows : Fiist nine, 18 ; second nine, 15. The reason of se much time being consumed was from the fact that when the ball was knocked ever the embankment it would take lire te ten minutes te find it ; and this is Columbia's baseball grounds ! A Narrow Kecape. Tlneugh the misunderstanding of the conductor of shifting engine Ne. 441, a narrow eLc.ipc fiem making a bad wreck was had at Gruhb's furnace yesterday mernir.fr. He looked at his schedule te find what time the Ilarrisburg accomme datien was due, but being unable te find it he ni doted his train te take the sidinu, and just as the switch closed en the retir ing engine the passenger train passed the spot. The Ironsides baseball club have sent a long communication te this paper iu eider, as the wiiter states, te Eet the club light before the public aud te give the leasen why they de net play mere games. They have ahcady played one game which cost them censideiable money, and the members had te contribute it out of their own pockets ; as they aie all working men they cannot alferd te Ipse the time aud pay their own expenses just te please the flu'dic. They h tve a club of the best mateiiai in town, but will net play again until an enclosed ground is secured. The reasons they de net play clubs in ether towns is that these outside of Lancaster have enclosed grounds and would pay the Ironside's cxjiense fiem gate money in case of a visit. A return game oenld net be played here for waut of a ground. The club new propose te attempt te raise $500 te rent and enclose a ground. There will be 25 shares at $20 a share.and these who desire te invest their money can de se and sce sonie bill playing. The members will furnish $200 of the amount themselves. As for the college club, the 5 writer adds that they will net play them unless they leceive $20 te pay expenses. There is a geed deal of sens 3 in the com munication and it gees far te explain why we have no baseball games. Game Postponed. The game between the Millersville and College clubs was postponed te day ou account of the absence of several of the latter'-, playcis. Supposed Stelen Goods. The name en the handkerchief found en Jehn Thompson, the man arrested en suspicion, is "II. N. Mitchell," net " Whitehall," as at was made te read in last night's paper. On his person was found a fine pair of geld sleve buttons with licks, bearing the initials " T. H.," and a dime, which leeks an though it was made for a lad"'s bangle with a monogram of the letters " M. V. P." All were likely stolen, as the letters are se different. The Page Anniversary. The anniversary of the Page literary society at Millersville comes off this eve uiug. Rev. Dr. Everett, private secretary te the governor, will be one of the orators of the occasieu. Lt Gov. Black and a delegation of fifteen senators had been ex-ju-cted as guests, but a telegram from Senater Stebmau reports that the Senate will held sessions this afternoon, te-night aud te-morrow; hence none of them can come. THIS SMALL-FOX. Eleven Cases Reported In the Jail. Exclusive of the prisoner who had the smallpox and recovered aud was dis charged and the one who died of the same disease, there are eleven ether prisoners affected with cither varioleid or small pox. Of these Fome are conva lescent, some convalescing and a few are in the earlier stages of the dis ease. Of the thirteen cases above men tioned, there are only two new suffering from well-defined smallpox, though a few of the ethers may develop into that dis ease. This morning the county commissioners and the prison keeper were in conference with Dr. Shirk, the prison physician, and Dr. Reed, the consulting physician, lately appointed by the prison inspectors. Beth pbysieians, after having made a thorough inspection el tne prison auu ine patients, are of opinion that all that is necessary te stamp out the disease speedily is te at once have the diseased prisoners isolated from the healthy ene3. It was suggested that an additional building te ba used for a smallpox hospital be erected iu the prison yard. Prison Keeper Burkhelder thought that if the prisoners who occupy the lower story of the build ing, known as " Bummers' hall," could be removed, the upper room could be used as a hospital, and thus a place could-be provided for the sufferers in inuiru less time than would be taken for the erection of a new building. After con sultation with Judges Patterson and Liv iugsteu, the commissioners agreed- te adept the plan suggested. Nearly all the piiseners new in Bummers' hall have but a few days te serve, and the prison keeper says he can provide quarters elsewhere for the few who have limger sentences. It is expected therefore that within a very few days the patients will be removed te Bum Bum mers' hall, which is well lighted and venti lated, and iu all respects much better fitted fur a hospital than the prison. In their examination of the prison the physicians found that the plumbing was miserably constructed and the draiuage utterly inadequate for an institutieu like the jail. J)r. Reed made several sugges tions and gave plans for the improvement of the plumbing which will probably be acted ou by the commissioners and in spectors. Contentious UontenaporarlcH.
