SergBnm Sugar The question seems te be about settled that sugar-making from beets cannot be made profitable in the United States. It baB thus for failed in the Eastern, Mid dle and Western states, we believe in every instance ; in several of tbem it has been tried under the most favorable cir eumstances. In lieu of the beet we must substitute senrum in the stateB named, which we believe has net failed wherever it has been fairly and fully tried. We have been sent samples of sugar from sorghum at the town Rie Grande.New-Jersey, that has really surprised us, accom panied by the assurance that it can be pro duced at a handsome profit. We are informed that all the sugar of Japan is made from sorghum, that for four hundred years the processes of gran ulating and refining sugar have beeu known in that country, and that in 1878 ever 33,500 tens were exported. Sorghum there is net grown as with up, from the Keed, but from cuttings. The stalks are cut and buried in September and through the winter sprouts are started from each joint. In the spring these sprouts are cut off and planted in row. In October and November the leaves are stripped off the stalks, when the latter are cut, the coarse outer covering is removed and the remain Ing portion is run though rollers. The juice is boiled in iron kettles until granu lation takes place, when it is put in bags and pressed dry. It is added, "dry up land soils are required for the successful growth of the cane and the expenditure of labor and fertilizers is aH great if net greater than for any ether crop." Sorghum here, with the cane for the Seuth, ought te supply us with all the sugar we need, without the importation of a pound, in the course of twenty years. Housebete) Alarkct. DAIRY.
