APE1I. 18, 1883, TEEE PLAxTI' IN MAUILASl). TObat 1 xseluc Uuue te Keep' Up tbe Forests or the State. Baltimore Sua. The Legislature of Maryland, at its last session, appointed an unpaid commission te examine and report te the next General Assembly what legislation is necessary te protect and fester- tbe forest growth of the Btate. A resolution adopted by the Legislature in this connection declares that the destruction of the forest trees in a large portion of Maryland is far in excess or the replanting wnicu is uetng uuuu, auu that unless proper remedial legislation .s enacted another half century will doubt less witness the almost entire destruction of the forest growth of" the state. The committee designated by the Leeislature te take charge of this important matter, comprises Governer William T. Hamilton, ex-Governer Jehn Lee Carrel, ex-Govern or Philip F. Themas, Hen Lloyd Lown des and Professors I It. Uhler and Ira Itemsen. The cemmittee have never been called together or had a meeting, but Prof. Uhler, who is thoroughly conversant with the resources of the state and itB needs, is fully competent te furnish at any time all the information the General Assembly may require en which te base proper legislation and in Tret, lwrascu no weuiu nun an equally able scientific coadjutor. The resolution el the Legislature implies that some replanting had been practiced before 1882, but restoration has never been car ried en te any considerable extent. The importance of trees te the health, saft ty and prosperity of any country is well recegnised. Heavy forest growing afford protection from "blizzards," and retain- the rainfall ami melting snows sufficiently te prevent sudden teneuts and consequent Heeding of large rivers, which are usually attended by destruction of property and even of life. On the ether hand, tee, they help te make springs whicli supply tbe tributaries of the larger streams Hillsides covered with trees and undergrowth retain the w.iter and oezo it off gradually te the springs, or permit it tojtgckle through rocky crevices and convlrge in the streams of lower levels. IVhilrn thn tiees are destroyed and the hillsides aie baked by the guu, the rain mshes down by a single impulse te swell the rivers and overspread large areas of cultivated territory; while that which falls en the disintegrated rocks is held as in a sponge, aud is parted with chiefly by evaporation into the atinospheio. The most extensive tree plantiug which has been practiced in Marylaud has been deae this spring by Mr. Jtebeit K. Martin who has set out 12,9G'J forest tiees of dif ferent varieties en the line of the Guu powder river, eight miles fiem the city. These trees have been scatteicd ever 34 acres of laud owned by the city at Lech Ravpn. Mr. Martin, who is the civil en gineer of the war depaitmcnt, says he will plant all along the line en the city's property until he gets the Gunpowder river fringed with weeds. Next fall he will procure acorns aud ether seed for extonsive plauting. The cost he says is trifling and the benclit incalculable. The importance of the work of Mr. Martin may be appreciated when the fact is remember ed that the Gunpowder rivnr has lest three-fourths of its vnUin.ii ie the past hundred years by the -iu-'-.'.l of the weeds which formerly ' ,i,1. -ts banks and grew sickly en the !i l a-di-s and in the ravines through win h it inl ntaiies .'and rcseuicea flowed t. Uj- m.ii'i w.itr ceuiae. Dr. U e lines en Arbor'.c.tl'ere. In reply te a letter en the subjet t of the Arber Day celebration in Cincinnati, Dr Oliver Wendell Helmes recently addivsed the following characteristic let.Nr t" his inend, Mi. Jehn B. Peaslee, i LUism ""'Bosten, March S, 1533. Jehn I! Peasloe Dear Sir : Yeu and yeui friends have chosen a veiy pleasant and most useful way of commemorating sorae of the authors whom 5'eti think worthy of being remembered by their fellow-countrymen. 1 hope that the cxauiple set of plauting trees as monuments will de as much fei American laudscape as the best of our authorship has done for American litera ture? "The tiees may outlive the memory of mero than oue of these in whose honor they were planted. But if it is something te make two blades of grass grew whero only one was growing, it u much mero te have been the occasion of the planting of an oak which shall defy twenty scores of winters, or of an elm which shall canopy with its green cloud of feliage half as many generations of mortal immertalities. I have written many verses, but the poems I have produced are the trees I planted en the hillside which overlooked the bread meaduws, scalloped and rounded at their edges by the Simeon's llousatenic. Na Na ture finds rhymes for them in the recur ring measure of the seasons ; winter strips them of their ornaments, and gives thorn as it were, in prose translation, aud sum mer roclethes them in all the splendid phrases of their leafy language. " What are these maples aud beeches and birches but odes and idyl3 and madri gals ? What are these pines and lirs and spruces but holy hymns, tee solemn for the many hued raiment of their gay decid uous neighbors. But I must net let my fancy run away with .me. It is enough te knew that when we plant a trce we are doing what w c can te make our planet a moie wholesuuie and happier dwelling place for theso who come after us if net for ourselves. As you drop the seed, as you plant the sapling, your left hand hardly linev.;; what its right hand i3 doing. But nature knows, and iu due time tlie powers that see you de the work in secret will reward you openly. Yeu have been warned against hiding your talent in a napkin, but if your talcut takes the form cf a maple Ley or an acorn, aud your nap kin is a shred of the apron that covers the ' lap of earth,' you may hide it thore uu blamed, and when you render in your ac count you will find that your deposit has been drawing compound interest all the time. Belicve me, dear Mr. Peaslee, very truly yours, "O. W. Helmes" Hi -veii Cheek, N. Y., Feb. fi, 1E?0.
