Arrival or HUty-Klne IrUta Farmer ana Hands en tur Indiana. riilUdclpUIa Times. The steamship Indiana, of the Auieri caM'line, which reached her wharf at neon yesterday, after a stormy passage of four teen days from Liverpool, brought CO evicted farmers from the counties Maye aud Galwav. who bearded the steamer at Queenstowe, driven from their homes by usurious landlords, and wne came te tuis country maiulv through, the charity of one of tbeands that has been raised in Great Britain and" Ireland for the purpose of relieving cases of distress growing out of the land troubles. A Times reporter bearded the steamship before she reached hsr deck and found the immigrants huddh d iu groups en the forward part of the deck. They presented a pitiable picture of dis tress and most of them carried all their worldly effects in a sack or bundle There were many children with the party. The health of the immigrants had been geed during the voyage, the physician said, after the qualms of seasickness had passed away. Nearly all of the steerage passen gers were vaccinated at sea. . Ne MletaKInc bucn Poverty. On the vessel was Rev. Bernard Skeily, from Galway, who has been sent out te this country by the arcbishep of Tuam te raise money for the relief of the prevail ing, distress in Ireland. He was accom panied by Brether Francis, a young friar whp knew the districts from which these people ceme. The Rev. Mr. Skeily said : ' That these are genuine cases of distress needs no words from anybody te prove. Their condition tells their story. Tney chiefly belong te the class of small tcnan try who sublet from ethers and subdivide their small bits of ground te the most at tenuated limit. The land in both the counties they ceme fiem is as worthless and meagre in its character as any en the face of the glebe. What is net rocky is mostly a barren beg. The soil that col lects between the rocks and in. the gullies of the hill sides is the best that is te be found. Of these peeple he is a larnc far mer who Rants three hundred weight of corn. When the season is bid or this mea gre supply fails they have te rely almost exclusively en lish for feed. In most cases if they lived en the land rent free they would be liable te be brought te the verge of starvation, but when they have te pay rent iu addition there is no hope." A Mrngle ler Existence. "' Among tligse people," explained Brether Francis, "one of the chief diffi culties seems te be early marriage. Fer as the sons grew up the small plot of ground which tlie father works is divided among them. In this way a few genera tieus cut the pieces of ground very small. In sorae instances a few hundred i-quare yards are all that the family has te live off." The Rev. Mr. Skeily explained that the emigration had begun under the aus pices of the society patronized by the Duchess of Marlborough, wife of the recent lord lieutenant of Ireland, wie originally gave about i", 000, te which she has ie eently added as much mere. This party, he brother paid, was assisted by this fund, but te what extent he did net knevv. The .Miserable Ashore With J.heir boxes aud bundles the wretched creatures Hocked ever the side as Men as the gangway was put in posi tion, and under the oversight of the cus toms officers ranged themselves along the deck te have their b.iggage examined and passed. In one place a group of women, with several children, squatted contentedly en the dirty whatf, gazing with ees and mouths ldc open at the strange sights of this new world. They were clad in gar ments of all cuts and colors, though the prevailing hue was a dull, dirty brown. The clothes of many were ragged and they apparently had seen neither soap nor water during the passage. Sorted en :i box together weie two l.uls from the "euld sod." who looked as though they might have stepped out of a p.ige of i comic al manac. One of them had a bit of a round hat perched upon th top of his head a fringe of hair ornamenting his fact1, which looked like a full moeu. Iu hu month was stuck a " dudcen," which he sucked nervously, blowing clouds of smoke te hide his evident embarrassmeiiL, said he : Me name is Pat Ceiftielly. I am from County Galway. I had a bit of laud and taised a few praties and bad one little runt of a cow. I lived near the shore and used te go out en the wather and lish a bit with the ether lads. The raius and cold weather retted all me praties. M rint fell due and the auld cow had te be sold. Thin I lest heart and was took sick . Whin I was teuld that the agency would siud me ever I was only tee glad te come. I am going te Bellair, Ohie. Tiiis is me dium, Tem U.iyuer, sir ; mebb? lie e.in tell you a bit of a sthery." ' Will, sir, I'm from Cennumara," said Themas, " and "worked for a small farmer. Whin the crops failed I had le go down te Galway te see if I could find impleymeut tp kape mcself from starving. Thru I fill ui wid the agent, who offered nie passage te Ameiiky, and here I am, and that's all of my sthery, excipt 1 am going te Pitts burgh." The steamer Ncsteri.w anived as Bosten en Saturday night with G.jO paspeneis, most of them evicted Irish tenants fu:n counties of Galway, Maye, Derry aud Denegal, sent out by the Biitish govern ment. The British agent furuislred money te these who desired te go te places be yond Bosten, the amounts depcudiug en the size of the family vaiyiug from a few shillings te five or six pmuids The Par thia, from Liverpool, arrived yesterday morning with a large number of the same class of emigrants.
