Tl'IfcLY SCiJJi:CTS FOB THOUGHT. Wny Is Sunday Kept? Uoniinle Facts liie Cardinal and and Fancy. Century Magazine. There are two telid grounds en which Sunday law rests : one, the right of the prevailing religion of the country (be it Jewish, Christian or Pagan) te have its day of worship free from disturbance ; anil the ether, the right of every man te an equal share in a rest day from toil. As regards the first, if this country wero a Jewish country the Jewish worship en Saturday should be peculiarly protected from molestatieu. If it were a Moham Meham rnedfiti country, tbe Friday should be in like manner protected. This is simply common sense applied te things as they are, aud no action of dectrinate theory. Where there is no conflict of sacred days as among Jew, Christian and JUouammc JUeuammc dau. all cannot be protected, and hence the majority must determine the ques tion. This certainly distinguishes the sa cred day, but docs no harm te these wheJ ile net count it sacred. tc enty euuges Ihem te be courteous. Tbe inequality in the matter is only such as in some things must obtain among the freest people. As lvjjards the second ground : physiolo physielo physiole Kistr., physicians, statisticians, aud sensible observer;; in general, have agreed that man's body and mind need a cemplete rest at an interval of about seven days. But man will net take tbe rest from labor unless lie is obliged by law te de se. His jjreed for gain will make him ruin health in his own case, or (wersa still) make him force his empleyes te luiu theirs by con tinuous work. The law, therefore, mus!; make and enforce a rest day. But what dav ehall it take ? Again : common sense says, " Take the day Which the mass of the community, from religious reasons, already lecard as a rest-day." Se the civil law, providing for men's physical well-being, appoints aud enforces a rest-" day from labor, which is the same day en which the great Christian community worship, and in which the same law, for ether reasons, pietects them in worship. Tii'ie is thu whole of the Sunday ques tion in a nutshell. There is no compelling men le be religious, no supporting a statu chnicii, !e puritanical blue-law. The Jew, or Mohammedan, or Pagan simply must ite make a boisterous demonstra tion, Mich as a noisy parade, en Sunday. Why '.' B( cause the vast majority of the people see n te worship en that day. The Jew, or Mehammcdau. or Pagan must net keep open shop that day. VYliyV li3 cause the people have decreed a rest day from labor once a week te help humanity, and that is the day. The only objection that has any color iu it :u that the Jew then must keep two rest ..ivh in the week, aud hence is at a dis dis .uivantage witli his neighbor. Well, as we have ahcady said, iu the most equal jiimiuibtratiens, theie must, ic tbe nature of things, ba some inequality. Laws, for example, icqnire a notice of "' danger" te be put? up iu dangerous p'aces iu the city ; but, alas ! blind men cannot rad the notice. The laws are unequal te the blind t: an. They have te ?. Se here 'he Jew's conscience tells him te keep Sunn working Satiuday. The law tells iiiiii t kei'p from working Sunday. It is :i pity ; iiu? it cannot be helped. The ether altcrna-ive would be " no rest-dav," and that would be destructive te the whole community. We must all bear seme bur dens for the public geed. Our Amu ictus liberties are largely eeu nected with tbe weekly day of rest. This dav has "ivcu the peeple time te think, I ai.d read, anil enjoy family life, and with- out it V. i; Milium nave ucueuiu an iguuiam, biutisb, machine-people, like the low peasantry e! continental Europe. Takn aw.iy this rest day, and you undermine our high moral and educational condition as -. people. Yeu turn us into a nation of uieie " werkics." The cry el religious oppression, a. against observance, is a de vice nl the enemy. It is but the voice of soulless corporations, and et the proprie tors of drinking saloons aud ether denier alizim: places, who wish te make their meat gains ou Sunday, and care nothing f. iv tin: welfare and happiness of the peo ple. They are the oppressors, and the advocates of a day of rest are staunch supporters of title freedom. Amend has thice bulwarks of liberty afiee ballet, a fiee school, and a tree euiiday, aim neither domestic traceery nor foreign impudence should be per ir.itted te break them down. CARl'INAL AMU DOMINI K. A is Amusing Story About a PeIein!rl Ils- cusnien ou a Kallreail Car. Annville (l'a.) Gazette. Tii December, 1878, D. S. Early, general agent of the United Brethren mutual aid s' eiety, was sent te Augusta, Me., te con fer with the insurance commissioner as te tha admission of the .society te de busi ness iu that state. In Bosten he was joint d by Mr. B. L. Chadbeuruc, of East East pett, 3!e . who was te accompany him te Augu.s'a in the interest of the society, l.f'in'j seated together in a car, seen alter the train pulled out of Bosten, Mr. E. and Mr. C enjajied in conversation, and ero long, by request of Mr. C , Mr. E. com menced te explain te him the origin and creed of the church of the United Breth ren in Christ. Being a very ener getic aud demonstrative talker, Mr. EatJy's manrer attracted the attention of nearly all in the car and especially of an elderly, clerical .oeking gentleman who sat in the next seat behindtbem, who happened te be (although Mr. Early did net knew it) none ether than Cardinal McCleskey, of New Yerk. In the course of his remarks Mr. Early spoke in com mendable terms of some of the p'eculiaii ties of the church of his choice, aud poin ted out its superiority in doctrine en cer tain points. But iu the midst of his earnest conversation, Cardinal McCleskey interrupted him by saying : " Yes, my triend, but hew de you kuew tha1; your chuich is right?" This, from an entire stranger, rather tDek Mr. E. off his pins ; but recovering himself, he turned te the cardinal, in blissful ignorance ei the great ness of the man whom he was new ad- 3 dressing, aud began te assign reasons ler believing that his church was right. But as he assigued ene reason after another the cardinal would always reply, " Yes, my friend, but hew de you knew that your church is right ?" and thus succeed ed in making it for a time quite warm for Mr. Early. By this time nearly all the passengei s in the car (many of whom, including Mr. Chadbeuine, kuew the cardinal) were noticing with much interest and amusement what seemed te be a very unequal contest. Finally in'his attempt at giving a reason for believing that his church was right, Mr. Early referred te Martin Lnther as an authority. But at once the cardinal re plied by saying, "Yes my friend, but hew de you knew that Martin Lnther was right?" This was tee much for Mr. E. It raised his Pennsylvania Dutch bleed, and raising te his feet and turning round se as te leek the cardinal square in the face, he Raid in a very loud voice and with great emphasis, the eyes of all in the car new fastened upon him ; " Well sir, since you have asked me that question, I will just tell you hew I de knew thai; Martin Lather was right. I knew he was right because of what he did. There was the old Pepe and all his cardinals and bishops and priests and all the kings of Europe en the one Bide, and there was nobody bat little Martin Luther and Ged Almighty en the ether side, and little Martin Lather just took that old pope's ball by the horns and gave his neek such a twist as he will net get ever until Gabriel blows his horn, and sends the old pope with all his cardi nals, bishops and priests down te hell ; where they belong. That, sir, is the way ; I knew he was right." The last sentence he reared eat at the top of his voice, and with its completion all the passengers in the car cheered, elapped their hands and burst into rears of laughter. Soen the train stepped, and the cardinal, having reached his destination, left the car, but before doing se he gave Mr. Early a hearty shake of the hand, said he was glad they had met, and complimented his pluck and shrewdness. When Mr. Chadbeurne informed Mr. Early that he had been talking te Cardinal McCleskey he was somewhat stunned, but en recov ering himself he remarked in his charae teristic way, Well, I don't care if I did. handle him a little roughly. He inter rupted us in our conversation, and when a man does that he must put up with what he gets." Frem that en Mr. E. was lionized by these New England pas sengers. A Deserving Ue. Captain Pratt, who is in charge of the training school for Indian youths at Car lisle, Pa., tells of an Indiau lad, eighteen years old, who appeared at that school, only a few weeks age, having found bis way across half the continent, in search of an education. He had $2.75 en starting from his Western home. That brought him across the Mississippi river. Then by walking for days together, and getting an occasional ride en a freight train, he made the rest of the long journey. He sold his Indian ornaments for $2.25, te give him bread en the way. If theso ornaments had been se'd at a church fair, iu behalf of the missionary cause, for sending the gospel te these who wouldn't come and leek it up, they would probably have breugiit a geed deal higher price than that. Coming ever the Allegheny mountain range the Indian lad's woru-euc moccasins were no protection te his feet against the snow, and he bartered his blanket fur a pair of shoes. At last be reached the Carlisle school, and asked te be a sharer there in the gospel privileges that some persons have thought his race unworthy of. What race could be named that would show a nobler spirit than this, or a fuller fitness for tbe reception of the best influences of Chiistiauity ? Captain Pratt has asked help for the support of that boy ; and it would be a crying shame te us all if he didn't receive it. Te tie Consecrated. The most important religious ceremony a'ter tbe cm nation of the Czar will be the inauguration of the chuich consecrated te the Saviour. The foundation of this church wa3 due te a vow of Alexaader I. duiing the French oeupu'ion of Mosjew. Begun iu 1817 en Meuks Hill, tbe only eminence iu the neighboiheod which breaks the the dead level, the works, after having cebt an imineuse sum, were brought te a stand still after eight years, by reason of the discovery that the foundations were gradually sinking into the sand. A new site was then selected net far from the Kremlin. The work was begun in 1839, and is just en the eve of completion. It is in the purest Byzantiue style. The ma terial is as far as pessible Russian, worked by Russians, the only foreign matter be ing certain marbles.
