Fatal Affairs Keperted from Various Quar ters. An inventor of a repe fire escape, who refused te give his name, tried his appara tus at the corner of Ilalstead and Madisen streets and sustained fatal injuries. In Syracuse, N. Y., James Brown, col ored, was found dead in a barn in the First ward, lie was badly beaten a few nights age by a man named (Joeny, and it is thought that death resulted from the injuries received. Mrs. Samuel Lewis, of Freuchtewn, N. J., lies at the point of death, the result of an attempUen her part -te commit suicide by cutting her threat. She was suffering from temporary insanity. A trestle bridge at Raccoon, en the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia railroad, fell in with the southward bound freight train, Charles Walker, a colored brake man, and R. Tiddwell, an engineer, were killed, and Carl Kemp and Jehn Cox, passengers were seriously hurt. Oscar Richardson, an insane patient at the Brattleboro, Vt, asylum, turned the het water faucet in the bath room and sat in the het water until he was' fatally scalded. He died during the night. Henry Mullet, an old man of Rutherford, N. C, having quarreled with his son. went te his house armed with a shotgun. Find ing it closed, he burst in the deer with threats aud curses, but as ha entered the deer the son fired aud the father fell dead. In Pricetown, Colusa county, Cal., Dr. A. J.Glenn, the largest wheat raiser of the btate, who ran for governor en (he Deme crat'c ticket in 1879 was shot en his ranch at Jaciute, by II. Miller, his bookkeeper. The doctor is said te be dying. A sad story cemus from Deer island N .B. A brother, en visiting his sister, who lived in a somewhat out-ef-tho way place, en entering the heuse found four childteu lying dead from diphtheria, and the mother lying ill in bed with a new-born babe. William Murphy has surrendered him self at Uuioutewn, alleging that he mur dered a Uuugnriau in Luzerne county, in September last. Chief cf Police Grim, of "Wilkesbarre, will arrive in Unioutewu in a few days te identify him. When engiue Ne. 7 of a freight tiain ou the Genesee Valley Canal railroad, lau upon the bridge at Allen's creek, near Scottsville, it plunged into the creek. The fireman, Chailes llanua, was killed, and Henry Fuller, the engineer, had his arm broken aud feet crushed. The body el the fireman was recovered. The piers of the bridge had been washed out by the ice and water. It is new supposed that the steamer re ported as wrecked near Swansea, en Jan uary 27, was the James Grav. en a voyage from Cardiff te the Cape Verde Islands, with a cargo of coal, and thence te Phila delphia in ballast, as a body, recognized as the Captaiu of the Gray; and the body of a little girl, believed te be that of his daughter, weic recovered en. February 1, near Porthcawl. It is also piebable that her entire crew of twenty five bauds have been lest. James Ress and his son, living en Bread river, Rutherford county, Seuth Carolina, get into a dispute ever a trade of two oxen. The father threatened te kill his son at 12 o'clock, but failed te meet him. At 7 o'clock the son, armed with a butcher knife, met his father and attacked him. He cut his threat in two places and stabbed him seven times, killing him instantly. The son was arrested and is new in jail. Mrs. Brown, aged 50, wife of "William H. Brown, a well-known citizen, left her home in Meadville, saying she would le turn in a few minutes. As she did net return promptly her family and friends became alarmed ami began searching for her. She had been in deliuate health for some time and it was feared she had com mitted suicide. Search was continued all uight, and next morning her body was recovered in a mill-pond near her home, where she hal fallen or thrown herself. l'AT " 1 UK AVcNUKU. A Man Who Killed five of the Philadelphia Troop in IK, 7 Dangerously Wounded. Pittsburgh Dispatch te the Press. "William Phillips is lying in a critical condition, from an ugly wound inllicted with a poker in the hands of a man named Henry Yeung, with whom he get into an altercation seme days age. Phil lips is better known as Pat, the Avenger," from the prominent part sup posed te have been taken by him in the great railroad riots in Pittsburgh in 1877. At that time it was said that a brother of his had been killed by the Philadelphia troops when they had fired the fatal vol vel vol ley at Twenty. eighth Stieet crossing, kill ing seme fertj- or fifty poeplc. The troops afterward lied te the round heuse, where they remained until morning, when they made their cscape from the mob and marched out te the arsenal, hut, being refused admission there, they continued en the march te Blairville. Frem the time they left the reuud heuse until they get several milts from the city, they were followed by a large crowd, among them a man supposed te be Phillips, who carried a rifle, and at every opportunity picked off a soldier, killing five between Twenty eighth street and the Allegheny cemetery. As the story went, the man, when he found his brother had been killed, registered a terrible oath of vengeance, and that he kept his oath the number of dead along the street fully tes tified. Phillips was arrested and sur named "Pat the Avenger," but at the trial no person was able te identify him as the party who had done the sheeting, and he was released. Shotguns at a Wedding. A special from Tracy City, Tenn., gives an account of terrible excitement, growing out of a sheeting affray at a wedding en Saturday night. The trouble arose between Jeseph Berry, the groom, and Wm. Iller, father of the bride. The father had objected te the match, and en that account the ceremony was performed at the grooms house. It was hardly begun when the father appeared en the .scene, and he and the groom exchanged lour shots. Iller was wounded aud driven from .the house amid immense excitement, aud the wedding ceremony was afterward Informed iu the presence of the groom's friends.
