LANCASTER fiATLY INTELLIGENCE!, MONDAY, NOVEMBEB 27.1882. THE TOBACCO MABKET. XBA1MS IN MKKli LEAF AMU HAVANA. For tfce Week Ending Satarttoy November 23, 10 A. MU A Extremely Full Maraet. U. 8. Tobacco Journal. Oar market is almost lifeless, and the few transaction that have taken place within the past seven days were ridicu lously small. Thoroaro hardly any proa peeta that a ehaage will take place before January 1. The manufacture of cigars in this aity has of late, as a whole, grown quite dull. The tax agitation is beginning to tell once saere, while the expectation of greatly lower prices for Sumatra tobacco after the 1st of. January, puts a check upon any extenaiTe operations in seed leaf. The somewhat extenaiTe purchases of 83 tobaccos in New York state and the scattered small ones in Pennsylvania have not any fftgnftf" whatever upon our tobacco market Tho success of the '81 New York state crop so far, hasenoeur aged speculative spirits to again try their fortune in this crop. Some of the few purchases of Pennsylvania have the ap pearance of a blind to the farmers for them to hold out for high figures on both their present and last year's crops, while the bone fide purchases are for exceptional purposes. It is safe to say that a continuance of the present dullness in the trade for several months will result in a continuous falling of prices for all grades of loaf Sumatra included. The pressure that .will be brought to bear on Congress for 'the increase of duty on Sumatra is assuming formidable' pro portions. From every tobacco-growing section of the country strong and earnest appeals are being made, and a rpeedy ac tion by Congress on this subject may be looked for. Should the movement succeed and Su matra be taxed so high as to virtually prevent its importation, the dead weight will be raised from the market. The sales of the week number about 1,100 cases, comprising 300 cases '80 Penn sylvania, at 8 to 15 cents ; 250 cases '81 Connecticut, mostly seconds, at 13 cents ; 400 cases '81 Ohio, at 3 to C cents ; 200 cases '81 Wisconsin, at 10 to 17 cents. Sumatra Quiet. Sales don't reach probably more than 150 bales. TLo dull ness in cigar manufacturing circles, com bined with the near reduotion in figures, causes this temporary quietness. Prices unchanged. Havana Quiet. Sales 400 bales, most ly '80 stock. Prices firm. FORTY IIUUKS OF AGON. The Terrible Adventure or the Survivors or tfaa Collin gwood. On Thursday last a terrific storm pre vailed on the lakes. Details of serious disasters are received. The most terrible of all was the loss of the schooner Col lingwood, her captain and four of her crew. As tho propeller Wisconsin was on lier way from Grand Haven, Mich., cries for help wero heard. The life-boat was hent out in the direction from which tho sounds came. In a few minutes the crew came upon a raft containing three men. They were the survivors of the Collingwood's crew. They wero half frozen and temporarily blind as the result of their sufferings during the forty hours that they had been floating without food in a terrific gale, The three survivors aie It. D. Sheldon, Frank Markin and Nicho las Johnson. The Collingwoodjwas on htr way from St. Helena to Chicago, where the boat was owned. It is said that eho was almost uutcaworthy. During tho gale on Thursday afternoon the vessel was waterlogged. The galo was blowing from the northwest, and tho sea caused tho craft to roll over. Tho crew, consisting of eight mon, wero washed overboard. Tho captain and tbreo of the men were last seen floating with posts under their arms. The remaining lour men succeeded in climbing on a small floating piece of the vessel. The steward bocamoa raving man iac during the night, and his comrades found the greatest difficulty in keeping him from jumping from tho raft. Ou Friday ho succeeded several times in plunging into tho water, but each time he was dragged back by his faithful compan ions. In the afternoon his strength gave out, and after a last maniacal strugglo ho died. His body was washed off of tho raft. The raft gradually began lowering as the posts under it absorbed tho water and from dark until the time the men were found they stood knee deep in tho ice cold water. - They kept awake by walking from one end of tho raft to tho other. Every once in a while one of the castaways would becomo unconscious and stop over board. The others would pull the unfor tunate one back on the raft. The Colling wood was commanded by Captain Willetts. It was owned by him and the Eeef Bros., of Chicago. It is feared that the men who were taken from the raft cannot live.
