Tbf steamship Worcester Buns Down a Barge on the JSatt Klver. A disaster by which seven persons lost their lives occurred at six o'clock on Thursday evening on the East River, op posite South Fifth street, Williamsburg. The barge Signal, loaded with seven hun dred barrels of sugar, had been taken in tow at the foot of North Fourth street and was proceeding on her way toward the bay when she was run into by the steamer City o! Worcester and a large hole stove in her side. The steamer received but slight injuries and proceeded on her way, while the barge was taken in the direction of the Brooklyn navy yard, tha nearest point . There were on board at the time Captain William Taylor, his mother, wife and three children, also two deck hands. The barge rilled rapidly and sank befote the shore was reached, Those in enrage of the tug observed the barge going down and quick ly turned the tug around and steamed toward the sunken craft. Owing to the darkness it was difficult to distinguish objects in the water. Hearing cries of help they were followed up and Captain Taylor was rescued. His mother wife, three children aud the deck hands were nowhere to be seen, thoy having evidently been carried down to tho bottom of the river by the sinking barge. The river was searched, but to no purpose. The cause of the accident could not be learned last evening, but it is supposed that tho force cf tho tido was miscalcula ted. 875,000 Worth of Frel&htliarned. Louis Meyer, the helper of the foreman, was thrown into tho street and fatally injured. Frank Bitter, one of the employes, was badly scalded, and Christ.
