IN POLITICAL POINTS, UK3I AND rOK A QUIET INAUGURATION No Fuss and Feattiert Plain, Slmplo Demo cratic Government Tlie Press of the State In Favor or ir. Philadelphia Chronic-Herald. Governor Fattkon vfill be inaugurated on the 16th of January. This ceremony, which in its simplicity is nothing more than tho taking of au oath aud the reading of an address, has of late years been made the occasion of great pomp and display. The induction of Governor floyt into the gubernatorial oftiea was accompa nied by au immense amount of public show and expeuse, for whicU there was not the slightest necessity. Several thousand dollars were taken out of the state treas ury in order that ho might have a good ' send off." Governor Pattisoa will now have an opportunity to show that he does not countenance this fuss and feather busi ness, which Chairman Ilenstl has also pronounced against. It is more iu unison with the sound principles of Democratic government than everything like ostenta tion or heavy expenditure in the method of ushering a citizen into public office should be avoided. The taking of the oath of office is much more impressive when tho governor-elect appears before tho chief justice with tho surrouudings of ordinary citizenship, consecrates his pro tui.se on the Holy Book, addrcsbes his fellow-citizens who are assembled befora him, and then enters his office at once to commeuco tho public business. No mili tary display, no pageants, no mart ill strains of music are needed to impress the greatness and solemnity of the simple ceremonial upon the minds of the people. It is to b& hoped that Governor Pattison will earnestly discountenance tho efforts to get up big parades which havo no other effect than to demoralize the little town of Ilarrisburg and benefit its hotel keep ors. Indeed, Governor Hoy t would pro bably also givo him that advice, for when he was about to appear before the chief justice to take tho cath there was such a sudden rush and crush caused by the parade as nearly carried the governor, thn judges, and everybody near them, off their feet, aud completely robbed the ceremony of all dignity or impressiveness. Tho Ueneral scutimeut of tlio People. Heading News. Thcic is a geuetal sentiment among the Democracy ot the state for a plain, unpre tentious inauguration of Governor Patti ttson. Tho tawdry displays that marked these occasions under ' boss" rule were simply so much money out of the pockets of the taxpayers, aud no one was benefited except the party hangers on, the office ex pectants and the horde of jobbers who have Hocked about Uarrisburg for years. The military of the state havo been too conspicuous, aud exhibited under the form of the national guard, a power that is familiar to the despotisms of Europe, but has no place in a republic. The Legislature should not apptopriate a dollar for tho in auguration of Governor Pattison. There is no necessity for it and the people do not ask for it. Legislators are only tho ser vants of the people, and they should re spect the voice of those who elected them. The money which would be appropriated for such purposes is drawn from tho tax payers and should be used in diminishing the public debt and defraying the legiti mate expenses of the Legislature. It has also been tho practice to furnish the executive mansion annually in a costly manner. The office of tho governor was not intended to bo a show piece, nor is the incumbent expected to use his salary to furnish entertainments to a favored few who constituto what is called " society at the capital," Tho great b ody of voters, aud their mothers, wives, daughters, sis ters, cousins and aunts never call on the governor cither at his residence or at his office All extra expenses, horticultural gardens, etc., have grown with the profli gacy and corruption of the shoddy period that followed the war. Thero should be a leturn to simplicity and economy, for tho latter can not be practised if vulgar show and parade rule the hour. Tuo Democracy represent tho people and not a plutocracy, and if any gentlemen in the public scrvico desire to indulge in banquets, receptions and entertainments, they should pay for the pleasure it affords them out of their own pockets. The Motion Seconded. Clcarilcld Republican. Chairman Hensel struck tho right chord in his interview with a reporter a few days ago when he said : " I would like to see a quiet, modest inauguration, with out any fuss or fandangoes and at not a dollar of expense to the state treasury. I believe 50,000 Democrats would go to Ilar risburg to see and applaud such a send off." "These are words of wisdom, and wo hopo they will bo heeded by our friends. Wo second the motion. Let the debate go on. Let It Ite modest Clinton Democrat, Tho inauguration of Governor Pattison takes place at Harrisbujg January 10th, and promises to be the most imposing event held in that city for quarter of a century or more. Tt should be a modest affair. Another County ne.irrt Proin. Erio Observer. Alreary somo of the exuberant Demo crats of Philadclphii sra propar'n to have a grand demonstration at Ilarrisburg at the inaugural of Governor Pattison in January. This is not in accordance with tho desire of Mr. Pattison, and wo hope nothing of tho kind will be attempted. The induction into office of the reform governor of Pennsylvania should bo as quiet and unostentatious as possible, and without a dollar's expense to the tax payers. We would like to seo the method of Turn Jefferson's inauguration revived, who hitched his horse to the fence in front it the capitol aud quietly took the oath of office. Let the coming ceremony be con ducted with tho greatest posstblo simpli city. Who Should be left. Philadelphia Ledger. The canvass for speaker of the Wash ington House of Representees is not to be a dance for two Democrats only. Al ready, in addition to ex-Speaker Randall, who is the strongest single candidate, and Mr. Carlisle, of Kentucky,' thcro is Mr. Frank Hurd, of Ohio; Mr. Springer of Illinois ; Mr. S. 8. Cox, of New York, and Mr.Joseph Blackburn.in Mr.Carlisle's own state with numerous other -states to hear from. These are all very fre quent speakers on the floor, where all but one of thom will remain. That one ought to bo Mr. Randall. Bow Wagner carried Adams County. An interesting incident of tho late elec tion occurred in Adams county, in this state, in the contest between J. W. Rosier and Mr. Wagner for senator. The foimer exooctcd to carry Adams by OUU, but in stead his opponent captured it by one ma jonry. It secniB that a friend of Rosier cut Warner, as he thought, but instead placed the sticker over the name of a member of the lower House of Assembly. As a result of this the vote counted for Wagner, and Bosler failed to got the county. DEATH OF A NOBLE WOMAN. The Lady Who for More Tbn Mfty Years Wits the Wife ot Am Packer. Mrs. S. M. B. Packer, relict of tho late Asa Packer, the well-known projector of the Lehigh Valley railroad and the founder of Lehigh University, died at the family mansion, in Mauch Chunk, at 1:47 yester day morning, .after an illness of a fort night's duration. Mrs. Paoker was born at Spriugville, now Dimmick's Four Cor ners, Susquehanna county, Pa., March 13, 1807, and was married to Judge Packer January 23, 1823. Three of Mrs. Packs er'ar children survive her, viz. : Rotor;; A. Packer, superintendent or Penn sylvania and Now York division of tho Le high Valley railroad, of Sayre.Pa., Judge Harry E. Packer, vice president Lehigh Valley railroad, and Miss Mary Paoker. Mrs. Lucy P. Linderman, the eldest daughter, preceded both Judge aud Mrs. Asa Packer to the grave. Her surviving children were all present at her death-bed. Judge and Mrs. Packer celebrated their golden wedding January 23, 1878. It was the greatest social event that ever oc curred in the Lehigh Valley. One of tho provisions of the will of Judge Packer, who died iu lbiU, was as toiiows : " Jiy purpose is thatsho (Mr. Packer) shall have whatever she wishes out of my estate, and all other provisions hereof are subordinate to this one." Mrs. Packer was greatly devoted to her husbaud and shared all his trials and successes. The lived iu Mauch Chunk since 1834. 31 rs. Packer was known through a wide eirela for her unobtrusive charities and good works. Recently she had caused to be erected a large chapel and Sunday school inconnectiou with tho Episcopal church in the town. The funeral will take place from the late residenca in Mauch Chunk on Monday, 20th instant, at 3 o'clock, p. m. She will be buried beside her husband in the family plot in Mauch Chunk cemo tery, on a rugged bluff overlooking the town. It you can't "itoar" a cough, "Hull" it. with Dr. Lull's Cough Syrup. The other peculiarity that everybody expects to find here is less pleasant to speak of; lower prices. We put it second, because there are people who don't credit us' with lower prices. Still, we imagine that if one should assert the con trary, almost everybody in Phil adelphia would believe it.
