; LAHCA8TER DAILY INlElMGENOER, MONDAY; &UGUST 7, 188. v 3 A i SOME SNAIX. THE MONSTEK III DIOAWABIS. A Keptlle Twenty Feet Lone Wilmington Gazette James Cheeseman, said to be " a gen tleman beyond reproach and of unimpeach able character," while driving leisurely along the road from Delaware City to St. George's, on Tuesday morning last, was suddenly startled when on the St. George's causeway near Dragon creek, by tbe ap learance of a large reptile- coming down the road directly toward him at a rapid pace. As the moving mass approached In: discovered it was a hugo black snake at least twenty foot long and about a foot in diameter, as near as could be judged by the hurried glance he gavo the " var mint " Before the loatbsonio creatuie reached him he gave his horse a cut with a whip just as the snako made a jump for the animal. Tho horse sprang to one side and started on a dead run, apparently terribly frightened. The snake missed its aim, but struck tho front wheel of tho carriage a stunuing blow, breaking out nearly every spoke and making the vehi cle tremble and; cant dangerously to one side. Mr. Cheeseman did not succeed in stopping his horso until it had run about a mile, when he looked back, but saw noth ing of the horrible reptile, which he do scribes as being covered with large scales. Charles Brown and his wife, while blackberrying in the same vicinity last week, were chased by the same immense creature, but by dint of hard running they succeeded ui gaming a place or shelter. The existence of tho snake is well - kuown, and a goutlenicu who docs not care, from modesty, to hare his name ap pear, very reluctantly gives an experience he passed through about ten days ago. He started out blackberiying in the marshes along tho banks of tho Dragon creek, carrying with him a shotguu. Feeling tired about noon ho concluded to rest awhile and began to make his way to an old log, as ho thought, about twenty feet distant, to take a .scat. Upon an proaching what he believed to bo a fallen tree the object moved slightly, when he. discovered it was not a log, but an im mense snako, on which were scales about the size of soup plates. Instinctively he fled as rapidly as the nature of the ground would permit, leaving his gun behind. Finding he was not pursued he glanced back and saw his snakeship moving slowly away, and although he believes he saw the middle of the crcaturo Hist, it was fully fire minutes before tho tail passed through the bushes. A crackling noiso followed in the wako of the snake and small trees shook as tho creature's tail swayed from side to side. Gaining courage, the Gazette informant secured his gun and started after the snake, which haddisappearcdiu tho wooiK After traveling about a mile the hunter came in Bight of the trunk of au old hollow oak, about fifty feet high and two feet in di ameter, from the top of which protruded the head and almost ten feet of the " aw fulest thing I ever saw," as the informant remarked. Its ho.id was abnit the sizo of a nail kog and of a glossy black color, its forked tongue shootiug out venomously fully a foot, accompanied by a hisbiug sound resembling escaping steam from a locomotive. The hunter took aim and fired, the load of shot striking tho snake, the shooter thinks, two feet from tho head. Tho load failed to make auy impression, but dropped to the ground Hittcned out. A shot from thu second ban el resulted the same way. Tho last report, however, sootned to auger the suake, and it started out of the top of the tree, its lire-like eyes gleaming in tho sunlight. Tho man at once left, looking around when t-oino riis tance oil' and seeing tho loathsome crca turo hlowly letting itself down by tho tail to the ground, while around the ton of the tree appealed the heads of numerous, small m lakes perhaps a hundred evi dently the young of the monster. The now thoroughly frightened berry gather lied precipitately and not until Air. Cueescmati's uxK!riciice became known did ho tell of his adveuluie, which of course will have to be taken cum grano sails. Tho existence of a hugo snako in tho vicinity iiifiitioncd has been kuown foi some years, and it is ou rceoid that lleniy and William Carson, sous of John (Jar. son, were at one limn chased homo while out berrying. At that! into a party was 01 ganized, ami armed with guilt., pistols, hatchets, pitchforks, etc., scouted the vicinity for two days, but without succchs. Another party is to bo formed in a few days and a graud snako hunt orgauized. SNAKi: SKINS AS Willi'.-. Sixty ol tbe Vipers Killed by Two Farmers. The farmers' boys in tho northern part of Chester county uso snako skins for cart whips, tho skins serving tho purpose remarkably well after soaking in alcohol for a considerable time. Samuel Elliott and John Miller, farmers of South Cov entry township, Chcbter county, about twelve miles from Phccuixville, have killed this summer nearly sixty snakes on their farms. The other day Mr. Elliott was wending his way from his barn through a marshy meadow toward a wheat field, when, nearing the fence inclosing the grp;u, he saw a largo blacksnako making tracks in his direction. Now, Farmer Elliott is not a coward, as he told a Record reporter, but tho way "he got back to the barn after a fence rail was something re markable." Calling ouo of the farm haudsto help him, they wont back to dis patch tho reptile, which measured six feet in length and was as thickas a man's arm. Tho snakes abound mostly noar thick woods or running water, and most farmers provide themselves with stout clubs when working in fields adjoining such places. A year ago Mr. Elliott was bitten by a copperhead snake when mowing. Having occasion in tho boat of the day to stop his mowing machine near a clump of trees and rest in their shade, he was bitten in the left thigh. The poison of tho bite en tered so thoroughly into his system that be was unable to work. Ho claims that tbe bite still troubles him. Uathyille, onto, Feb. 11, isso.
