IIOME. His New Residence at Chelton Hills ALislit nlng fetrack Party noirn at Cape May Point. Mr. John Wauamaker has just erected at Chelton Hills, a very short distance from the Noith Pennsylvania railroad station, a residence which, in its stylo, adornment, situation and equipment, is worthy of be ing called one of the fin-st rural houses in this country. It is afu i- the Queen Anue order of architecture, and not merely looks imposing from the crest of the hill, but is surrounded with that :i :osphere of com fort which distinguishes the cheerless from the cozy home. The first thing which strikes the visitor is tho extraordinary width of the hall, which from its unusual size teems a man sion in itself. Tho stairway is on the left- hand side ami constructed with platforms forming a hollow square or well, which is lighted by a dome. The different rooms on each story open on theso galleries, one of which is to lo used as an art gallery J To tho left of tho main entrauce, you find tho drawing-room (hero we lirst learned that parlors were out of style), a medium sized apartment lighted by one largo bay window. Tho woodwork is all of satin wood exquisitely polished to show a grain as fine and soft us tho fabric from which it takes its name. The Hoor in this as in every room in the house is of hard wood aud what is termed parquetry, a species of joiueiy or cabinet work consisting of in laid work in geometric or other patterns designed to bo covered by handsome rug?. Over tho open fireplace is a cabinet of the same wood exquisitely carved iu a uni form style. All tho mirrors aro bevelled glass, and tiles aud wrought brasses aro used in harmony and an effective manner. The ceiling is frescoed and tho walls cov ered with lincrusta of a delicate bluo with dado of a deeper tint, tho whole forming a perfect contrast to the delicate color of tho woodwork. This LincniBta-Walton is a fabric closely resembling oil-cloth, and is composed of linen, whitelead, linseed oil, and gutta perch. After it is on the wall it can bo painted and tinted to harinouizo with any stylo of frescoiug and decora tions. Adjoining aud communicating with tho drawing room is the dining room, which in turn connects with tho conservatory on the left, and upon tho right communicates with tho pantries, several commodious closets and passage ways leading, to the kitchen departments. On the right side of tho house aro tho library, aud. what is termed tho ' homo room" Tho stained glass windows of tho former aro orna mented by the faces of John Knox, John Calvin, John Buuyau and John Chambers, and tho homo or sitting room in furniture and wood carving of tho mediaeval age. Tho woodwork iu this aud tho main por tion of the house is mahogany and ash. The kitchen is supplied with all modern conveniences for lightening labor, and is finished iu California red wood. There are in tho house six bath rooms. The bath room proper, however, deserves more than a mere notice. It is situated ou the second door, and accessible from any room on that story. Tho side:; aro tiled, aud under tho floor, which is also tylcd, is a coil of steam pipes which ren ders it impossible for tho temperature to fail. Tho tub is porcelain lined and set iu Tennessee marble, and instead of stand ing iu the usual maunerit isset lower tlian the floor ; consequently you reverse the usual mode of entrauce to it. Tuo .at fixtures iu tho bed rooms aro oxydized silver, with crystal pendants. The boudoir is finished iu satin wood. Nearly all the rooms have opeu fire-places with tho hearths, and mauy bric-a-brac shelves or mautels. Tho light always en ters through stained or plate glass. Too lloors aro all inlaid, and mauy of the walls arc ornamented with tiles cither of a scriptural or historical character. In the nursery tho entire dado is composed of tiles which illustrato -rEsop's F.tblc3 and familiar tales of fairy lore and kindred subjects dear to children's hearts. Iu Mrs. Wauamaker's bed room tho window scenes arc illustrations of tho hymns 'Abide with mo," and ' Awake my soul and with the sun" and a earctul study of t'to dome reveals faces typical of the sea sons aud different months of the year. A " LIGHTNING SlltUCK fAHTV." Wonderful Kitcapo or a Hoana Full or People at Cape May Point. Rending Times. A party of Reading people, plcasuie seekers at Cape May point, had a frightful experience on Saturday last. Tho party consisted of Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Stauffer aud family, Misses Annie and Lou Stew art, Misses Anna and Belle Ebur, Miss Mary Iliestcr, aud Miss Bessie Stevens, of Beading, and Miss Nellie Gait, of Potts villo. Tho following letter from one of the young ladies describes their remark able escape : Mr. S., as you are aware, was in I call ing on Saturday, when the dreadful event, whichl will try to' describe, befell us. There were five of us in the parlor reading ; Auuie aud Belle E. were iu the next room, a bed room ; Mrs. S., with tho children, was on tho second story, nap ping, or at least trying to do so ; ami the girl was fixing up the dining room. It had -rained in torrents for a long time, and lightened aud thundered also ; but all of a sudden there cuno a fearful flash and crash, aud wo were struck perfectly dumb with fear. We all wentiuto Auuie and Belle's roam and stood completely awed ; it? was filled with smoke and the smell of brinistonei Annio was right by the win dow, sitting on tho bed, when the stroke came. The window was completely shat tered, tho shutter takeu off and the glass smashed. The frame struck Annie as it fell, but she miraculously escaped injury. Belle was further back on the bed, aud was also unhurt. Annie aud Belle were like statues ; I thought Annie was struck, but it was only fright, and she soon re covered herself and becamo quite self possessed, but Belle was like ouo insane ; she walked about and wrung her hands in the most frantic, manner, and Nell was seized with hysterics. Little Keim's arm was numbed, but by rubbing and bathing it got all right again. Wo sent for a phy sician for Nell, and in about an hour's time she became herself again. It was a fearful experience, and one which I trust we may never bo called upon to pass through a second time. But tho lightning did not strike in this one place only; - it seemed to pass all around the cottage. Tbo dining room wall was knocked down, a lamp upset on tho floor, and dishes strewn iu all direc tions ; the window was completely de molished, and the girl was standing withiu one foot of where the flash passed through. It is certainly miraculous how she escaped alive, but she was not even stunned, although she was thrown down by the shock. The kitchen took" fire, the lightning having struck the stove, but by the thoughtfulness and bravery of Wirt the fire was extinguished, and we "were saved from injury in that way. Two rooms in the back building, secoad floor, nad all tho wall knocked down and the roof partly taken toff. Indeed, there was not one room in the entire house that was not touched, and yet no one was hurt. We all feel most thankful to a kind Provi dence, I assure you. Every one has been very kind, and many came to examine the ruins aud offer their services. Wirt wont for a carpenter, who immediately fixed things in such a way as to make it safe for us to stay. In a few days everything will be made right. We all felt like going home at once, but soon got over that feel ing. We are quite jolly again, and are considered a very interesting crowd. On all sides we hear ourselves called "the lightning struck party." MINERS HASHED TO DKATU. A rrlghtfal Itallroad Accident Near Mil City The Head and Wonndeil. Oil City Dispatch to the Times. About noon, Friday, a locomotive draw ing seventeen flat cars, heavily loaded with coal, started down the track from the Cranberry mines. Fifteen or eighteen of the miners boarded the rear cars to ride to town, intending to return in a short time. The grade of the road is very heavy, aud when about half way down the train bo- came unmanageable. It ran at a frightful rate of speed, aud when about two miles from tho mouth of the run the rear cars on which the miners were ' riding were hurled from the track aud completely de molished. Albert Valler, a boy aged 13, was thrown against a tree aud his brains dashed out. Itobert Mc Giuty was so badly hurt that, he lived only half an hour. George Merring was found under one of the trucks with the top of his head cit off and his brains spat tered about. David Morgan, conductor of the traiu, had both legs crushed aud his head cut badly. He lived about three hours after the accident. Charley Mc Ginty, a nephew of Robert McGinty, had his skull crushed and lived only a few hours. Field River was injured about the head and bad one leg broken.. He will probably die. Archie Lafferty was injured internally and had one shoulder dislocated. Irving Carter was cut in the head and had his ankle spraiued. Oliver Latshew was cut about tho head and otherwise iujured. Frank Hallcr, one arm broken and badly bruised ; Charley Gannon, left leg broken in two places ; left arm also broken ; David Beatty, slightly injured about head and shoulders ; John Costello, badly in jured aboutPtho head, causing his death : Wesley Wright, tho engineer, was found under a car of coal, badly injured ; Spur gcon McLane, fireman, badly, but not fatally injured ; Frank Eeaken, badly cut aud bruised. Two or thrco others were slightly injured. From the point whore the first cars left the track, tho track is strewn for about two miles with debris. The engine aud three cars remained on tho track until near the month of tho run, where they ran into somo cars standing there. One locomo tive was overturned and the wreck was piled about twenty feet high. Tho en gineer aud fireman remained at their posts until the locomotivo was nearly over turned, when they jumped. A three-inch pipo lino near the track was broken and quito a quautity of oil ran away. Tho wrcek was one of tho most remarkable over seen. The track was torn up about half tho distance. Trees were uprooted, rails broken and cars thrown in every di rection. The dead were removed to Paul's undertaking establishment and the wound ed to the City hotel, which is converted into a hospital. More deaths arc expected. Thomas Jefferson and Hen .Randall. Ilarrbburg Patriot. In the state department at Washington, along with the original manuscript of the Declaration of Independence, is a small, plain, unpolished mahogany desk upon whicji Mr. Jefferson drew up that immor tal instrument. It bears the following in scription in the handwriting of Mr. Jeffer son, in the same clear, bold aud exact characters in which he wrote a half a cen tury before, when at tho age of thirty three he was selected by Congress to pre pare the most important paper ever written by man : "Thomas Jefferson gives this writing desk to Joseph Coolidgc, jr., as a memorial of his affection. It was made from a draw ing of his own by Ben. Randall, cabinet maker, of Philadelphia, with whom he lirst lodged on his arrival in that city, in May, 1776, aud is tho identical one on which ho wrote the Declaration of Inde pcndcncc. "Politics as well as religion has it super stitious. These, gaining strength with time, may one day give imaginary value to this rolic for its association with the birth of the great charter of our independence. "Monticeiao, November 18, 1825." The desk was made by Ben. Randall, with whom Jefferson lodged. Simple, plain, genuine man of the people, Jefferson took up his abode with honest Ben. Ran dall, tho cabinet-maker, and the two to gether got up this unpolished piece of fur niture, upon which in a room in Ben. Ran dall's decent house was written the Dec laration of American Independence. This is decidedly the most interesting feature of the relic. Mr. Jefferson's policy then and ever afterwards, but especially in his tremendous conflict with the aristocratic federalists and the moneyed power, was framed in the interests of the Ben. Ran dalls, and the Ben. Randalls of that day kncwlthcirljfricnd and followed him in all his efforts to maintain the rule of the peo ple and the "republican principles of the constitution." It was to protect tho rights and interests of the plain American people the Ben. Randalls who produce the wealth of the country and to preserve to them their due share of power in the government that Mr. Jefferson founded the Democratic party. The proper place for workingmen is in that party. So long as that exists any separate organization of manual laborers for a political purpose is not only useless, but it must necessarily be more or less mischievous. A Significant Toast. An Irishman drinking the health ot Ids bisnop, gave this toast : ' May your rlvercnce live to eat the old hen that crows over your grave." It anything could make that toast true, it-is Hunt s Remedy, whose one mission is to prolong life, and to deliver from the power of insidious and mortal disease. And what more terrible and fatal than kidney and liver diseases ! What intense suSering, too, is connecteit with urinary troubles !
