IxNCASTER DAILY tlNTELUGENCEK, PKIDAY, 'AUGUST 4, 1882. JLuuasui iriurUigemrt. FRIDAY EVENING. AUGUST 4. 1882. MIDSUMMER JN MEW ENGLAND. The proud pomp of tlio Midsummer is here: Willi daisy blooms the meadow lauds arc white. And over them the blrd3 chant their delight, And the blue, listening heavens bend U hear. Within the lily's painted cup the bee Swings drowsily, and dreams about the iobo lie loved in June, and how her leaves repose Where none can find them save the winds and be. The trees are heavy with their wealth ol green; And under them the waiting maidens walk And fill the Idle hours with girlish talk Of such a knight a.? never girl had seen How ho is noble, good und princely tail. And one day ho will come, "from his far place, And road the. blushes iu liw true love's face. And she will rise and lollow at bis call. And then 1 see a little, painted boat With white sails bet to seek the summer sea. And In that boat two lovers, young ami Iree, With favoring winds 'ncath smiling "kies afloat. And all the ptoud Midsummers pomp Is come. And all the Joy of flower, and bird, and bee. And all the deeper Joy, when lie and the, Their heart's Midsummer lound, with bite s :no dumb. fjOitite Chandler MouUon in Our Continent. A UECOLL1XTION. The rose looked falter j,s It lay On her cold bieast that bummei day. And sweeter studied its guileless breath Above the heart so still In death. Beholding her the eye could Irate A tender smile on her calm face. While on her lips one could not niKs The Impress ol .Love's last fond it it,. She seemed as one fast fallen asleep. Like one In blissful dreamland deep ; Or like an angel in repose. Breathing the breath ol a u hlte io-c. And yet her quiet lovlincss A deeper meaning did expit'ss And lull ol such a solemn power As makes one dumb in such an hour. We bended down ami kissed the face So white and sad, yet lull ot giaec. And lull the Illy hands that picked As in fond prayer, the beauteous In east And c'ropped a tear ol sail regret O'er one whose lovely bloom had bet In rarer hues and sweeter scent. In God's blest Garden or Content Geo. Ji'ctvell Lovejoym 2V. V. Eiangelist. Farming aan Business or a Speculation. Germantown Telegraph. A great deal of discussion was started years ago, and every now and then we see it continued, as to why the Western farmer does uot on the whole make as much money at fanning as his Eastern brother. Taking it Tor gi-auted that this is the fact, and wo think it is there ate good reasons why it should be so. As a rule the man who goes West to faun does not, by any moans, look wholly to farm ing for his prosperity. He calculates largely on the increased value of his laud. Farming is not the main business, it is rather an element iua speculation, a some thing which is to bring him iu bread and butter till his "great ship comes in." Those who travel frequently West tell us that in most agricul tural districts to which they 10 turu altera few years, they had an entiie now set of faces. The original larmeis have gone fai thcr AVcst and new men have the farms. If perchance they find old ac quaintances still around it is only to see their business cutiicly changed. The laini which a dozen years ago was noted for its grain is now perhaps a sheep-walk, or a vat-t cattle pasture, or the owner has "gone into fruits," or experimented with a thousand things. The instances wheat true, genuiuo farming, cariicd on in a given, determined way on a lixed plan, am the exception and not the rule, (in this plan some mauage, however, to make largo fortunes. Iuiisuin land, or in a fortunate cattle or grain simulation, they happen just to ''hit the uail on tho head," and these lucky examples turn the heads of others who cannot see why one man cannot do as well as another, and aie not satisfied until they find out why they can not. jMow, the iostoru larmer is more con tent at least we will speak for the Peuu sylvania farmer whom we well kuow. You may see Inm now, perhaps a young man, in March and April with his oats, iu May with his corn or tobacco field, iu June with his grass, in July with his grain and iu August and September with his potato and corn, and you shall come back in twenty years and see him just :n the same places, his hair perhaps paler and his back not quite so straight, but still the same, only you can see evidences of " fixiug up" and comfort evorywheio a sure iu- indication of a good, substantial bank account Rarely does an Eastern farmer strike on that luck which makes a man suddenly rich as it does him of tho West. He does not look for or expect it ; but be noes at it as tho business of his mo and when industriously and intelligently pur sued, it invariably rewards him with a competency, and very often leaves him a rich man. Now, if there is any difference, as we think there is, the explanation lies here. It is, however, only in tho nature of things that it should be so. It is the bold and speculative who go off to seek their fo: tunes. They are ready for anything that turaa ap, and the argonaut of to-day may nave aJ:1stock-ranchc to-morrow. This spirit hMjKcn the means of covering the whole law! with an enterprising popula tion, and farming as a business will follow them by-and-by. I1ATK8VII.LK, Ohio, Feu. 11, IbSO.
