Maxwell Evarts, son of erSecretary William M. Evarts and a member of the sophomore class of Yale college, is the owner of a line healthy badger. He also owns a rat-terrier named Fannie. The badger escaped from its owner and took refuge in the catch-basin te a sewer, corner of State and Chapel streets, New liaven, and the police and general public were much interested' in effecting the capture of the animal. Crowds of inch and bej; gathered at the sewer entrance for sev. ral days, in the vain hope of iecj.eiing Mr. Evarts' pro perty. In the meantime the badger fre quently hhewed hin.self at the mouth of the catch-basin, riways retreating when capture appealed probable. On Sunday night, two weeks age, the badger came cut of his hiding place and was taken alive in : tiap and returned te Mr. Evarts who toe'c his pet te his bearding heuse, Ne. 00 nigh street. The animal again escaped, however, scramblintr up a chiru nep, where he amused himself by clawing out the bricks and revolutionizing the in ternal economy of the building. lie finally disappeared, but was recaptured and is new in a cage. Mr Evarts, nothing dihoeuragod by his adventure in the .sporting Held, immedi ately eutcicd into another enterprise Theic came te New Haven, by the Adams express company, a crate containing 30 lively rats. They were consigned te Mr. Evarts, and it was seen made known that the little terrier, tfaunie, who had net sue. cccded in badger hunting, was te be ex ercised in rat killing. As seen as the rats arrived Mr. Evarts' class mates wero overjoyed. They abaudened their les les eons and hastily lepaircd te a cenveni ent yard, where the crate with its squealing live stock was conveniently placed for the exhibition which came eh yesterday afternoon. Fannie was put inside the crate and lime was taken. A com mittee of .students had fust counted the rats and found them te number just 27. The students danced about in wild glce at the speit, and in about six minutes Fannie had killed every rat. It is lepertcd that they weie procured in Nerw Yerk at the rate of $7e a hunched, the market price. Mr. Evarts has gene te New Yerk, but whether te order another crate of rats or Ot ether business is net known.
