The recent discovery near Tliebcs of a bonanza of ancient Egyptians is one of the most important discoveries of the century. Surface indications of mummies and ether objects of archaeological interest bad been known te exist for some tirae in a mountain gorge about four nflles east of the Nile, and Herr Brugsch, of the Beulak museum, made a prospecting tour in that region last June. On exploring a pit 35 feet deep, he struck a vein of enormous riches, which has since been worked for a distance of 200 feet. This vein consists principally of Egyptian kings, queens and princesses, of whom 30 have already been taken out. With these dead Egyptians are also found a large quantity of manu scripts, jewels, gods auiF ether useful and interesting objects. A careful assay .shows that the vein yields about seven mummies te the teu, together with SO per cent., by weight, of gods and manuscripts. In point of richness this vein or rather pocket has hitherto never been equaled in the an nals of archaeological mining. Hnd the kings found by Ilcrr Jirugsch been merely the cheaper variety of late Egyptian monarchs, the discovery would still liave been of great importance, but it se happens that the explorer has struck some of the most valuable kings of whom we have any record. Among them is the identical king who erected the obelisk new in Central park, and we may new expect the World te devete itself as ardently te the project of bringing this king te Am erica as it did te the project of supplying the Central park with an obelisk. Still mere valuable is the body of that Pha raeh who would net let the children of Is rael go, and who was finally drowned in the Red $ca. It is te be hoped that some rich Hebrew will buy Pharaoh no matter at what price and exhibit him for twenty-five cants' a head, te the curios ity and scorn of the Jewish nice. In this way the dead king, would, after the lapse of thrce thousand years, receive a proper punishment for his oppressive treatment of the Israelites, while at the same time some descendant of that encn despised race would make an easy fortune as Pharaoh's exhibitor. Hopes are entertained that among the mummies of Egyptian matrons net yet identified there will be found the tee famous Mrs. Potiphar. Could she be exhibited in Sunday schools as an il lustration of Mie story of Jeseph there would no longer be any need of picnics, fairs and strawberry festivals, for the at traction prescutcd by the real original Mrs. Potiphar would simply irresistible. Even mere important than the mummies of Pharoah and Mrs. Potiphar arc the papyri which form part of the seceut dis coveries. Or, rather, it is believed that when these papyri are read they will prove te be of the utmost importance. It is supposed that among them will be found the Egyptian version el the trouble with the Israelites which resulted in the Exodus ; and it will be extremely inter esting te compare it with the Israelitish version of the affair. It is hardly probable that an official Egyptian history will agree in all things with the Mosaic record, and we shall probably find Pharaoh represented as voluntarily driving out the Israelites because of their tendency te monopolize all the offices and all the wealth of the kingdom, and as having ac cidentally ciiahed in the Red Sea in eon een een sequence of having been seized with cramps while bathing. Orthodox people uecd net expect te find any Egyytian pa pyrusa fuUcouliiniatieu of the Jewish ac count of lh Exodus, for the Egyptian his torians had advanced sufficiently far in civilization te write history in a way te meet the views of their fellow-citizens. The discovery of this great Egyptian bonanza ought te attract the attention of these ingenious persons who are constant ly forming silver mining companies te the liehnossef the Egyptiati deposits. Royal mummies and aucientjupyri arc of mere value than their weiglfl in silver, provided they are judiciously put en the market, and the Valley of the Nile is probably rich in sphinxes, obelisks, and ether arch aeological treasures. Mining is inexpen sive in Egypt, since there are no rocks te blast, and nothing te dig through except sand. It would pay te work a vein yield ing only one mummy te the teu, but as a matter of fact mummies are always found in jewel-bearing strata, se that, after the mummies are taken out, the saud can be profitably worked ever for geld and silver ornaments and small gods. Any mummy mining company that can make a satifac satifac tery arrangement with the Khedive, and begin work almost anywhere in Egypt, will be reasonably sure te strike mummies and papyri in paying quantities, and te make a dividend within six months after driving the first spade into the ground. As a field for mining speculation, Egypt is vastly superior te Colerado, and the man who could net write a convincing pros pectus for a mummy mining company would be utterly lacking in imagination. According te the best Egyptologists, the Egyptian monarchy came into existence about eight thousand years age, se that there is little fear that the niiucs of mum mied kings can be exhausted in one day. Ne time, however, should be lest in organ izing mining companies and selling stock, for if England and France jointly occupy Egypt free mining will net be tolerated. Strength or nines. Chamber's Journal. The amount of alcohol present varies greatly in the several liquors of which it forms the intoxicating ingredient, rum containing about seventy-live per cent. ; whisky and brandy averaging about fifty ; pert wine, twenty; sherry, fifteen te twenty-four; Madeira, nineteen; claret, ten ; champagne, fourteen ; cider, six ; ales and porter, from six te twelve ; and abstainers wjll probably lie surprised te learn that all fermented drinks contain alcohol, ginger beer, &c, usually contain ing from one te thrce per cent, of it. In deed, total abstinence from alcohol would seem almost an impossibility, for even milk contains sraalljquantities of it ; and in bread-making it is produced in consid erable quautity by the action of the yeast upon the sugar in the flour ; the aggregate- amount of spirit thus produced in Louden being some three hundred thou sand gallons aunually. Seme chemists go the leugth of asserting that even water itself is net entirely free from it. LANCASTKK HOUSEHOLD MAKKKT. DA1BT.
