The numerous instances of "mistaken identity en record are constantly receiving new additions. There is an amusing ac count of a French lady who was very jeal ous of her husband, and determined te watch his movements. On one occasion when he ield her he was going te Ver fiailles, fchc followed iim, keeping him in hight until she missed him in a passage leading te the railway station. Leeking about her for a few minutes, she saw a man coining out of a rIove shop with a rather overdressed lady. Making sure from the distance that this man was her husband, she came suddenly up, and with out a word of warning gave him three or four boxes en the car. The instant the gentleman turned round she discovered her mistake, and at the same time caught sight of her husbaud.Jwhe had mere ly called at a tobacconist's and was cross ing the steeet. There was nothing for it but te faint in the arras of the gentleman whose cars she had boxed, while the ether lady moved away te avoid a scene. The stranger, astonished te find an unknown lady in his arms, was further startled by a gentleman seizing him by the cellar and demanding what he meant by embracing that lady. " Why, she boxed faiuted," exclaimed tlemau. " She is mv wife," my tlie cars, and then aggrieved gen- sheuted the augry husband, "and would never have struck you without a cause." Aud werse than angry words would probably have followed had net the cause of the whole misunderstand ing recovered sufficient te explain hew it happened. A Louden paper gave au account of an other case of mistaken identity in connec tion with a distinguished jwrsenagc. An aged couple, in high life, who were cele brating their golden wedding, by way of concluding the festivities ou that occasion, adjourned with their children and their re spective belongings te a theatre-, in which, te accommodate se large a party, two boxes had been knocked into one. The eldest son, who strongly resembles his Royal Highness the Priuce of Wales, step ped ferwaid and occupied the centre scat, with the ladies of the party beside him, upon which the eichestra struck up the national antl;em, aud the audience rose te their feet en mans:, the innocently uucou uuceu uucou scieus party of course, doing the same themselves. There is no doubt that peeple of rather unusual propet liens had au awkward time of it when the claimant was at large. A story gees that :t corpulent gontleinan once took a box at the Canterbury hall. First one person, then another, eyed him, until at length the counterpart et the claimant became the centre of observation. A cheer arose, the singing was suspended, and an ovation was the result. The supposed Sir llegcr rose and bowed his acknowledge ment. Uut this was net enough. He must speak. The manager announced that "SirKegcr" had a cold, and could net speak. Fearing the consequence if the audience discovered their mistake, he had the "claimant." removed as quietly as pos sible in a cab andsentinaionndabeut way te his home. The intoxicated bricklayer who squared up te a pest and maintained a one-sided light affords an absurd illustration of mis taken identity; but if we can rely upon uewspajwr reports, such ludicrous inci dents ate surpassed by what is said te have happened in the neighborhood of Merccatnbc. Sometime age the body of what was supposed by the discoverer te be a human being was found lying en the beach near the place above- named, having undoubtedly been left there by the reced ing tide. The usual preparations for holding an orthodox inquest were put in ferce and kept feing, until the examina tion of a medical man proved tiie suspect ed human corpse te be but the carcass of a monkey, which had probably been thrown overboard from some ship, and which se closely resembled in appcarance a human be'inu as Je requite the doctor te tell the difference. Such a mistake leeks cither like a gross llattery upon a dead monkey, or an unconscious satire upon human nature, calculated te delight all believers in the Darwinian theory. A net unnatmal mistake was that made by the policeman who arrested a Dublin youth under what appeared te be sus picious circumstances. The young gen tleman referred te was at a party in the Irish capital, and joined with great spirit in a game of forfeits. Amidst Use fun and merriment, it was proposed that te regain his forfeit he should pay a visit t) the turf stacks en the adjacent canal bank, and bring seme turf into the room. Think ing only ei the diversion that his return with an armful of turf we.ild create, he immediately hastened te the place indi cated, filled his arms, and was in the act of returning, when, te his horror, he be came aware that a policeman was in pur suit. 'Almest paralyzed with fright, he dropped his burden and awaited the offi cer's ariival. "Oli. constable," he stammered, " I've 1ceu playing a game of forfeits, and was told te bring seme turf from the canal into the house." "Net a bad story ; but you'll have te come with me," declared the constable. There had been continued complaints of turf-pilfering, se, regardless of his protes tations, the unlucky youth was locked up for the night. The first intimation his merry-making friends received of his whereabouts was whcii.ncxt morning they heard that lie had been explaining the mistake te the presiding magistrate, who fortunately cemprehcuded the case in a moment, aud dismissed it.
