LANCASTER DAILT INTELLIGENCER; SATURDAY, JULY 16, 1881. Lancaster i ntelligencer. SATURDAY EVENING, JULY 16, 1881. BIDDEN DANGER?. Fer tlie Intelligekckr. A bunch et Hewers lair and sweet and bright; Pure emanations of divlnestleve That seem but fit te deck the realms above, Waft fragrance te their sense, and thus re quite Tue angels' carols, while they sweet unite Eure harmony, with beauty all Inweve And sacred Innocence, whose form, thedevf Combines all geed. But sec, the aconite. Abhorred and buicful, clustering there un seen ! It silent poisons deaden life around, And. while we probe the view, distils Its death: And where wc thought but lite and love had been It sends cold sickness, an unhealing weund: Se mortals die by silent deceit's breath. II. II. S. Fun Among the Te els. Heme years since, David Barker, a dis tinguished poet in tlie state of Maine, after the birth of his first child, wrote and pub lished the following pretty poem : One night as old St. Peter slept, lie left the deer of heaven ajar. When through a little angel crept, And came down with a falling star. One summer as the blessed beams Ot morn approached, my blushing bride Awakened from some pleasing dreams And found that angel by her side. Hed grant but this I ask no mere That when lie leaves this world et pain He'll wing lib wav te that bright shore. And find the read te heaven again. Jehn G. Saxe, net te be outdone, and deeming that injustice had been done te St. Peter, wrote the following as .St. Peter's Reply. Full eighteen hundred years or mere I've kept my gain securely last ; There has no ' little angel " strayed, Ner recreant through the portal passed. 1 did net sleep as yen supposed, Ner lett the deer of hcavcu ajar. Ner has a " little angel " left. And gene down with a falling star. Oe ask tkat blushing bride, and sec It she don't frankly own and hiiv That when sin: lennil that angel babe Mie leund it In the geed old way. Ced grant but this I ask no mere That should your number still enlarge Ven will net de as done before. And lay it te old Peter's charge. Aii Old Sen Captain's Traps. A Telegraph Operator who get Hehl of n Soldering Iren Wlilch Pruveil te be Hspleslve. A curious explosion occurred ia the kitchen of the house at 12 Pineapple street Brooklyn, which carae near causing ser ious injury te several persons. Mr. Thes. Bochferd, the manager in Brooklyn for the new Mutual Union telegraph company, resides in the house. Fer several days there had been a leak in a water pipe in au extension at the rear of the house, and Mr. Corcerau a Western Union telegraph employee, volunteered, iu the absence of the plumber who had premised te attend te the defect, te solder the hole up with lead. Sme resin was pulverized and a bit of lead was procured, se that all the ama teur plumber needed was a soldering iron. There were some old traps iu the garret that had been left by a sea captain, and Corcoran searched among them, and felt thai he was fortunate when he picked up an iron tool about eighteen inches long, shaped like a soldering iron and tipped with a triangular pointed cud. He thought there were some unnecessary features about the tool for a modern soldering iron, but concluded that it might be a foreign tool or some patent arrangement. Thcie seemed te he two sections te the iron, the top one being about the size of a gas pipe and screwed into the bottom one. Then there were several Haps of rubber fastened en the upper section at equal spaces. These stemed te be useless in the art of plumbing, but Mr. Corcoran. didn't care what kind of a handle the tool had se long as it was all right at its business end. lie rubbed the point iu resin aud, re moving eue corner of the ran;e,hevcd the iron into a bed of het coals. Mrs. Aubrey, one of thoeccupants of the house drew up up a chair te leek en" and Mrs. Hunter folded her arms and watched the amateur's work. Mr. Corcoran took oil his coat aud was about te give Mr. Itoch ford a practical lessen showing hew every man could be his own plumber, when there was a terrific explosion. The top of the i-angc was scattered in small pieces about the room ami the old sea captain's soldering iron lifted its rubber wings aud liew out of the side window, carrying two paues of glass with it. The pieces of the range, which might have, done much in jury te the occupants of the room, took the same diicctieu. but the iron deer was blown across the kitchen. Mrs. Hunter, who had just turned te leave the kitchen, was knocked down by the coucussieu aud was bruised by her fall. Mrs. Aubrey fell out of her chair, and Mr Corcoran lest a little bit of skin from his forehead. The room was filled with ashes and smoke. As the noise was heard a block away, the house was seen besieged by a number of persons who wished te knew what had happened. The old sea captain's soldering iron was found dismembered. The lower cylinder was blown te pieces, but the top section was intact. This was handled with the greatest care, and when Mr. Rochford re ported the accident te the police they re ceived the mysterious soldering iron reluctantly. A policeman, in searching the garret, found nothing mere like it, but discovered an iron harpoon, and this shed some light upon the mysterious explosion. The old sea captain (Cape. Hutchinson) was formerly a whaler, and is his stock he had an explosive harpoon, which Mr. Cor ceran mistook for a soldering iron. This harpoon was leaded with explosives, which would put au end te a whale when the end struck it. The rubber wings, acting like the feathers of an arrow, helped te ini'ule the harpoon. A plumber called te take the dimensions for a new range, and Mr. Corcoran returned te tele graphing. LANCASTER HOUSEHOLD MARKET. DAinr.
