LANCASTER DAILY JJSFIELLLQESCESt, TtJESDAY, APRIL 12. 1881. Hanraster Intelligencer. TUESDAY EVENING, APRIL 13, 1881. THIS HAKKET BKLX. Sweet from bia pipe the piper drew A strain that ravished all men'- ears, Anil-seared in triumph te the bine Wherein the skylark disappear. The listening throng, or grave or gay. Were hushed beneath the music's sway. When suJden en the surer notes A harsh roseuudlng clanger fell ; A shout wnt forth from eager threats " The market bell ! the market bell !" Switt ru.hed the autllenea from the place ; The piper piped te empty space. An old-world story this, antique, And told In cynic irony ; The keen-sdged bnmer et the Greek, It bears no sting for tbee and me . A SONG IX SPUING. Vi e;n ' A Little Child's Monument," by the lien. Rede Xeel, an uncle or the late Lady ltlanche Murphy. All the valley sings ! And rings and rings ! AH : Nature never would have power Te breathe such ecstasy of flower. Vernal son? or happy .birds, The young rill's delicious words, Ne Iris hues might bring te birth. Ne hcirt were hers for any mirth, If lie were turned te common earth ! Oureelves arc the foundation stone ; If thought fall, the world is gene ; All were ruined, wanting one. But all the valley sings ! Nature rises en Immortal .wings ! O Southern spring, What a triumphal song you sing 2" A Lancaster Waif Kel-trs His Experience te a Benefactress. Fer t he.ISTKLLIOKNCBR. I was standing at a counter of the great commercial palace of Wanainalcer's, when a little thin face with earnest black eyes peeled into mine with, " How-de-de Mis X." Leeking down I wondered " who can this be that with such a glad tone of voice recognizes me in this strange place ?" Wliy.den't you knew me ? I'm Charley B., the boy that was one day up at our Northern market,. and big BebG. was a lickiii' inc because I wouldn't take his sass. and you took him off me, and you said I was born for semetuin' else as te be a swearin' and a fightiu'.aud hew I should go te Sunday .school, and hew I'd learn hew te be oed there, and learn hew te siiij, te and I went the next Sunday, and, ' with a twinkle in his eye he said, " but you WAMi't there," evidently think ing, thcre.he had me. The memory of the circumstance began te dawn upon nic, and I recognized the face, althe' it was then darkened by pas sion and a sense of injury." " Why, Charlie." 1 said, "who breugLt you all the way te Philadelphia ?" "BrungnuMcIf; 'was at the 'naugura 'naugura tien, tee." " And hew did yuu get there?" " Went in the cars." " Ami who paid your way ?" "Nobody : Mr. (.mentioning a Lan caster n.une) charteied a car and I slipped in it, and when they found me we was tee far te put me off ; and se we all went en te the 'iiaugnratien." " And did your father and mother knew el jour going?" " I guess me ; I told 'em I was ageiu'." " Hew old arc you, Charlie ?" " Eleven." " Ami what di'd you de when you get te Washington ?"' , " Blacked beets." " And what then ?" " Saw the president." " Well, Charlie, I see you have better clothes en than when you were in Lancas ter, where did you get them ?" "Worked for 'cm blacked beets and saved the money till I get a dollar, and then there was a coat in pawn, and they give it te uic for a dollar and give the jacket in, and the trousers was a dollar and a quar ter, and I blacked beets 'till I get enough te pay for 'cm, but they're a little tee big," and giving them a hitch te keep them in place, he said, "I corae here te get some pins te pin 'em up." The pins were liberally supplied by a young lady who presided at the counter. "And I've get a shirt tee," and he dived under the vest te assure me that there was really a shirt there, aud as if te impress inc with the gentility of his outfit, said, "I get a hankercber, tee ; bought it with ten cents a gentleman give me," and he produced it from his pocket for .my ex amination. It had decidedly lest its orig inal color, looking as if it might have done duty for some weeks in an iron foundry. "And I've get a ticket, tee." The ticket seemed te be a permit for a night's lodging and was evidently kept as a dernier retort in case no ether place could be had. "Peer Charlie," said I, "I am afraid this life you are leading is a very bad one." "Why?" " Because I a'n afraid you will learn te swear, and lie aud steal.' "I knew'd hew te swear before I come here, and I needn't steal without I've a mind te." . Charlie didn't allude te the lying part ; very likely thought that was such a small item that it wasn't worth considering, but " I knew a boy that can steal right before your very eyes, and you'd never knew it, and he can de a heap of ether things." Evidently a geed deal of a here in his eyes. . "Charlie, who is taking care of your" " I take care of myself." "And who are you staying with?" 'i,Netstayia' with nobody at all. when I get some pennies I stay ever night at the et,j .-&-.6 "i wu wnen i luunt any, I stay wherever I can find a place." ' " Where were you last night?" "Slept in a theatre." " Did they allow you ?" " Never knew'd I was there ; I slipped in when the people was acemin' out and crept under a bench, and they didn't knew a thing about it." " And where did you get your break fast ?" " Hain't had none at all. Will you give me some pennies and I'll get some ?" " Charlie, I'll net give you pennies, but I'll get you something te eat." And then I began te be ashamed of my suspicion of the use he might put the pennies te when I thought of his sensible investment of the shoe-black proceeds, till he said, " Let's go te the deer, there's a fellow there and he sells oranges ana bananas, and peanuts and flowers." "Ne, Charlie, we will go te the lunch room," and he followed me with great alacrity. He looked around at the pretty little tables with their glistening array of china and silver with a sort of dumfound ed surprise, but was seen devouring a roll and when satisfied deposited one in bis pocket and with another in his hand was turning away when I said : " Step, Charlie, what should people say when any thing is given te them ? " Leeking back, " Very much obliged te you ; geed bye," and departed, seemingly thoroughly satisfied with the world's dealings with him. The roll in his pocket secured him his supper ; the fleer of a theatre, a store' box, or the under side of a deer step a lodging place, and when the sun shone out shoe-blacking an occupation. "Peer little waif," thought I, " what is te be your future ? Will this street life make you callous te all moral sense, aud may the end be the penitentiary, or may it be worse? Who knows? Or may the geed providence of Ged in the form of some lever of humanity rescue you from the ways of vice ; and may the little seed planted in the Sunday school fall en geed ground and spring up and bear fruit ?" And all the mother welled up iu my heart as I prayed Ged te bless the generous heart that first established a lodging house for just such little homeless waifs. May his reward be "whereas ye have done it unto one of these least, ye have done it unto Me." Higher honors are his due than te the great ones whom the world lauds as heroes, "who wade through bleeding millions te a throne." Who shall say that Lancaster has net its enterprising citizens?
