LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, HJESDAY, APRIL 12, 1881 marked ly unusual power and feeling. Tbcy are betli finished artists, and tbeir work bears the evidence of intelligence and care. The part of Ruby Barrel re ceived faithful and satisfactory treatment at the hands of Mr. Harry Mainhill, and the remaining members of the company maintained the even balance. The scenic effects comprised an important factor in the representation of the piece, having been seldom equalled in the city. A live baby introduced in the third act comes in for a large share of attention. " Hearts of Oak " will be repeated at the opera house te-night. COLUMBIA NEWS. OlIK RKOtXAIt COKKKSPONDKNCE. The Search ler a Lest Child Feuiid Drowned, The sounding of the opera house bell after ten o'clock last night, aroused the whole town, and in a little while a large portion of our people were en the streets, most of them with the idea that a fire muat he raging .somewhere, although a leek in cveiy direction could net locate it. As tiic crowd bwelled at Thiid and Locust htiects each new arrival had his own ver sion of the cause of alarm, and put his question accordingly ; but a very few min utes suGiccd te spread the intelligence that a child was lest. The child was Maggie, the ix year old daughter of .la :112s Rich ardson, who moved his f.iiniiy yesterday from near Henry Clay furnace te a house en new Second street, Columbia. At about 10 o'clock yesterday morning the child was missed from its new home, but no serious alarm was felt, as it was thought the little girl might have wander ed away te play with ether children in the neighborhood, but when the hours passed and afternoon succeeded morning and evening the afternoon, then it was felt that something might be wrong and genuine alarm was experienced. Parties .were or er ganised and searches instituted, which were again and again renewed, but each time proved fruitless. At last it was de cided te arouse the town and make in qtiii ies as te whether anyone had seen the ini.ssiiig child, but this proved equally fi uitless with the searches of the day. In the yard back of the house in which Mr Hichardf-en moved yesterday is a ci.ttcrn generally with several feet of water in it, which is reached by means of a pump. 'I lie cistern is covered, biu for convenience a trap-deer is placed in it. As one search after another Jailed te biing any iuferma tien of the missing child it occurred te many that .she might have f.tllcn through this trap deer into the cistern. It was at length determined te explore the bottom of the cistern, and te that end a ladder was bieught fiem the St. Charles furnace. Mr. Hugh Denley made the descent of the ladder into the cistern aud the little girl was there found a few minutes before eleven o'clock. The death of the little one is widely known and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents. Seven or eight rafts passed here for the cistern market this morning en a slowly using river. "We aie informed that a misfortune of some kind befell one of the number below the dam, but whether it " stove " or stuck en a sand bar is mere than we can learn at this time.
