Gilbert and Sullivan received for the "Pinafore" in England a nightly royalty often guineas, with a guarantee of 100 nights. Hen. S S. Cox wants te go te Europe. bnt says be cannot start until the question of an extra session of Congress has been decided. The price of seats in the New Orleans cotton exchange has been raised from $200 te $500, there being a great demand for them. Rev. Ashcr Dliss, for many years a missionary of the American beard of com missioners for foreign missions te the Seneca Indians of Western New Yeik, died Wednesday. A clergyman of San Francisce calculates that one-third of that city's population arc habitual church-goers, one third arc skep tical as te religion, and one-third imlificr cnt. January last was the coldest month in Scotland of which records exist. The low est temperature authentically recorded was 15 degrees F. below zero at Stebo Castle, in Peebleshirc. A Kansas City evangelist wears bright feathers in his hat, huge green goggles ever his eyes, and at his belt a can of water with which te baptize converts be fore they have time te blackslide. One hundred natives of Vermont had :t maple sugar party at a public ball in Elgin, III., en the evening of the 18th iust. They ate 100 pounds of sugar sent from the old state, and told stories, sang songs and danced. The new public building new going tip en the Government Square at Denver, Cel., is te be one of the iinest structures in the West. One wing is designated for .the hit;h school, the ether for a free pub lic library. There will also be a lecture hall with a Heating eauauity of 1,000. The official returns of the late election in Indiana en the constitutional amend ments have all been received, and show a total of 172,015, against 470.733 votes polled at the last October election. The amendments were all adopted, tin; majeri ties ranging from 75,130 te 1)0,880. Only ene county in the state. Dubois, gave a majority against all of them. One ether county, Starke, gave a majority of 7 votes against the litst amendment, and voted in favor of the remaining .six. Harry UnliiiN Ueferms. Harrlshur Correspondence Pittsburgh l"e-t. When the law of 1871), te abolish the stationery business was passed, it com pelled members te furnish their own sia tienery, as the only stationery furnished was filr the standing committees and the officers of the Heuse. The chief clerk was instructed te take charge of the Mi-ml'. as is his duty, lluhu saw his eppmtuuity and he brought down a geed-looking young man with auburn side whiskers te fill the self-made office of storekeeper at $1,000 for 100 d.iys. It was no trouble te get it through Geerge Hall's appropria tion committee, only one member shewiug he could net b.; uonvineeil by the bland arguments of the boss Philadelphia rooster and trimmer. Wolfe kicked atraiust it as unconstitutional, but the wily Hulin sue" ceed in getting the bill se amended that. the extra officer was net recognized, but Harry's appropriation was increased jttsl $1,000. Ituddiman, Hall and ether Phila delphia members steed right up for the steal, but Gee. J. McKee was the only one who dared te eppase it. The bat tic against the roosters was ha:d and continued til! the hour of ad journment. It will be resumed te morrow, but I have no doubt of its piss.ige as the boys must be cared for in one way or the ether. Fennerly 201 members weic sup plied with mere stationery than they wanted, but new twenty-four committees are given a handful each and it is proposed te give a man (Geerge Tayler, of Philadel phia,) $1,000 for taking charge of the im mense supply. "Wolfe stated in his re marks that he was chairman of the judic iar3' (general) committee, which uses mere stationery than any ether committee i" the Heuse, and te the honor of the mem bers net a single sheet of paper was drawn from the state. That makes no dif ference, however, and the bill must pass. Ciiincse Tabic Etiquette. Amherst Gazette. Ting Lang He, an editeited Chinaman. writes as fellows : " Acceiding te the teaching of Confucius, no conversation must be carried en at the table. This pre cept of Confucius, disagreeable though it must seem te many, prevents many em barrassments at table, iimiely, one's being interrupted when he tries te .spjuk at table and the boisterousness with which some carry en conversation at table. Chi Chi nesectiquettc requires all te begin te eat at the same time, but each ene before he begins te cat generally says " Let us be gin," which is accompanied by a gesture with the chopsticks In finishing one's meal, the same gesture is used, but net the same words. lie says theti te these who arc still eating, "De net be in haste." It is custom ary for the elder te help the younger te these dishes which he cannot reach, but'in receiving etiquette requires him or her te rise. In sitting at a Chinese table neither one's body nor her dress must touch the table, and great strictness in regard te one's position is enforced. It is net according te Chinese etiquette te leek around when one is eating, nor te stare at ene another. Remarks made en the feed and the smacking of one's lips are (I'm sorry te say) allowable in Chi nese etiquette. The chopsticks, when one is net using them, must be placed en the tabic close together perpendicular te the spoon. According te Chinese etiquette, it is rude for ene te finish tee seen ; one must try te keep together with the rest, though it is becoming for inferiors te finish a little before their superiors, but uet a little tee late. Reading of periodi cals is strictly forbidden, but letters are allowed if they are very important. One very seldom asks for an excuse from table in China, but every ene gees al the s-.ime time." Kilted und Burled by Lightning. A strange story comes from Florence. S. C. As James Best was crossing a field en his farm yesterday he was instantly killed by a stroke of lightning, which tore up the greuud where he had .steed, and buried him from sight. Mr. Best was seen just before the fatal stroke and his disappearance produced great conster nation among these persons who were watching him from their windows, and several ran out te fathom the mystery. They found a large hole, sur rounded with heaps of dirt, but net a ves tige ef.Mr. Best After two hours hard work with shovels his dead body was found at the bottom of the hole. The case is producing a sort of religious terror among the mere ignorant and supersti tious countrymen, and they leek upon it as an omen of some great calamity. Deny IJrarcii tfeing te Back. The old Derry church, at Deny, en i he line of the Lebanon Valley railroad, is rapidly going te ruin. During the winter a portion of the reef, which had been weakened by the weight of snow restin upon it, was blown off, and the bnildhi" ' is new exposed te all the inclemency of the weather. The church was erected' in 1720 f.?i0Trn5?fH l?CStpiaccs of worship, in the United States. An ciTert should I be made te save it for many years te come. ' LAN C AST. B HOl'SEHULD DAIBT.
