Dilatory Taetics of the Demaerats. Washington, March 26. In the Senate te-day, immediately after the reading of the journal, Mr. Dawes demanded the regular order, being the resolution for the election of Senate officers. Mr. Pendleton moved te go into execu tive session. Rejected yeas 20, nays 29 Mr. Mahcne present and vetinjj with the Republicans. A motion te lay the motion en the table was lest, yeas 23, nays 29. Mr. Legan said that during the special session held by the Ssnate in 1832 the offi cers of the Senate had been elected. He cited this te show that there was a prece dent for the position new taken by the Republicans. Mr. Harris said that that was the only precedent that could be found and called attention te the fact that at that time all the old officers had been re-elected except one who had been removed for cause. Mr. Farley inquired of Mr. Legan if he could find any precedent where the domi nant party had refused te go into execu tive session te confirm or act upon nomin ations made by its own president. Mr. Legan replied by inquiring whether the gentleman could find a precedent where the miuerity had ever undertaken te rule the majority. Mr. Farley replied that at this very ses sion a minority of the Senate had for tw weeks filibustered against the organiza tion of the Senate committees by the ma jority. Mr. Merrill read from a speech male two years age by the Nester of the Demo cratic side Mr. Saulsbury at a time when a change of officers was proposed, advising the Republicans te recencile themselves te their position as a minority and like Christian gentlemen te bear it manfully. Mr. Butler retorted by quoting from a speech rnade at the same time by the Nes Nes eor of the Republican side Mr. Antheny in which he stated that he did net think he would ever be found advocating the re moval of officers who had performed their duties faithfully and efficiently. Mr. Call opposed the resolution. There was a doubt whether the majority of the Senate had net been procured by means in violation of the constitution and the laws and cendamnel by the jut sentiments of the country and these who did net oppose the resolution might become parties te the commence ment of a practice, the effect of which might be te substitute mercenary and venal considerations for the just and unbiased judgment of the Senate. He held it his duty te resist the resolution, which pro posed te bestow patronage en a coalition of parties diverse in their political princi ples and in their pledges te the country. Prospcctef a LengSlegs. Washington, March 26. The Republi cs in senators held a caucus this morning at which it was determined te ''stand firm " in the pending contest for posses sion of the. Senate offices and te continue it as long as may be necessary te attain success. It was agreed, however, that an adjournment of the Senate should be allowed at a comparatively early hour this afternoon and that subsequently the caucus shall reassemble te perfect arrange ments for resuming the struggle en Mon day with a view of continuing it there after without intermission.
