The Sketched Ship that "Materialized " and the Saiulal tnat Saved u Caravan. The Paris liappel says : In the fifteenth century the Jews were greatly persecuted in Spain, and eis one occasion a number of tbem were lyiug in prison in an inland Spanish town condemned te death and ex pecting the speedy execution of the sen tence. Among tliem was grand rabbi eu eu jeying the name of Ben Simah Durand. All at once his countenance was seen te become radiant; he took a piece of char coal, and having rough sketched a ship ou the wail, the rabbi turned te his com panions in misfeitune and said: "Ye who have faith put a. iinger en the ship." All aeceulingly did se, and the ship forth with became :i real vessel, which sailed away with Ben Simah and the ether true belie veis te Algiers. It is net te be sup posed, however, that the individual who abstained from following Ben Simah's be hest remained behind te die. Being a great rabbi liimsel . lie was able te perform mir acles en his own account, and no doubt dis dained te benefit by tlm.se of ethers. Scarce' had Ben Simah's troupe taken their departure -than this gifted individual Ben Keua by name steeped down, picked up the neglected charcoal, and por trayed with it a lien's form with as much success as his rival. The lien became en dowed witii life, Ben Keua meuuted ou his bick, and the pair proceeded direct te Mehtaganem. This may, with justice, be called a miracle. Its most wonderful featiue, however, is net that the sketches should havu developed into realities, though such events arc net te be seen every day, but that the ship which had te travel a considerable extent of land before reaching the sea, should have ex perieuced no difficulty in doing se, while the lien, en the ether hand, found it was just as easy te cre.-s the water. Wonder ful as this may be, however, the genuine ness of the miracle can scarcely be consid ered open te doubt, as all the names arc given Ben .Simah Duraud, in fact, being the ancestor of the Ourand family which acquired great celebrity in connection with the events which preceded our con quest, of Algiers. We might quote any number of similiar cases, but will euly mention one. the here of which is a Mus sulman a certain Sidi-Abil-el-Kader-cl-Djil.il I, who enjoyed a great reputation throughout Islam, and is still indeed re garded as the patron of travelers. This miracle is much mere recent than the pic ccdiug, bring little mere than one hundred years old. The Abdel-Kader in ques tion was engaged one day in haranguing a numerous assembly when he was suddenly seen te take off one of his woed-satidals,- wiiic'i lie thicw against a wall. The sandal of an ordinary man would probably have been bieken and pieces would have fallen te the ground. The holy man's feet-covering, however, went straight through the wall and disappear ed, his second sandal also pursuing the saiiLi course. Naturally eneuuh the audience were greatly astounded, but the explanation was net long delayed It seemed that a caravan was being at teked by brigands, and the traders had invoked Abd-cI-Kaders assistance. The fhst sandal had struck the chief of the brigands en the jaw. The robber would probably have nt ultimately been deter: cd from proceeding with the rifling of the caravan by the lcceptien of one sandal en his cheek, but when the second launched as in this first case, by an unseen hand, came Hying through the air and hit him in exactly the t-ame spot, the bandit felt there was something uncanny about the alfair and thuiefere let the caravan go en its way. As little doubt can. of course, exist as te the miraculous nature of this incident as of that of the previous one. U i Can't t'reach Geed.
