LANCASTER, PA., THURSDAY, Lancaster IFntcIlffiencer. THURSDAY EVENING, JAN. 27, 1881. The Story or arcth, the Kitchen-Knave. A Study Read by O. F. Adams, Before His Class In Kiigllsh Literature, December, 18S0. In the long list of Arthurian heroes it seems te me that no name among them all appeals with a stronger claim te our affec tions than that of Gareth, " The lust tall son et Let ami RcllIccllt., He belonged te the younger group of knights, that which includes "the young impetuous Lavaine," the "meek Sir Pcrci val" the " pure Sir Galahad, that bright boy-knight," the rcpentant "Edyrn son of Nudd" and the sweet Sir Pellcas of whom we read that with him passed " The sweet Hindi of the Ileitis and And the sunshine came along with him." when first he entered into the halls of the blameless king. The "meek Sir Pcrci Pcrci vale' and the " pure Sir Galahad" have iu them tee little of frail human nature for us te claim much kinship with them, and sweet Sir Pellcas wc pity mere than wc love. The fine Gawain yet has " a touch of trai tor" in him and with Sir Lancelet his 'guilty love for Guinercre is as the " Little pitied speck in garner'd fruit That retting inward slowly meulder nil." Itcmeinbcring the hard let te which the patient Enid was put by her suspicious husband, Prince Gcraint, wc can net alto gether love him, and though wc admire the held Sir Dcilivere, ve cannot excuse liis falsehoods te his kii. Fer the geed Sir Bers we luive the reverence which honesty always enforces, hut for Gareth, who will fellow glory wherever it may lead, and yet remains submissive, and ready te de whatever igneble tasks may first he given him before he may tread its paths, for this fair youth we keep the warmest place in our hearts before all knights of that great Table Itemul. We see him first cliai'ins in inaction at home and ceaselessly entreating Queen licncaut, ins mother, te let him go te Ar thur's court where the fine Gawain and and the sullen Medred, his brothers, have preceded him, there le be made Knight and bound te perform brave deeds of hasty hardihood. Leng he pleads with the re luctant Queen "1 will walk thre' lire, Mether, te gain it your full leave te go," he cries, and (lie mother, yearning te keep this, her youngest, safe at home, and be lieving that when Gareth " Ilelivld his only way le glory lead ' Lew down thre' villiau kitchen vassalage." he would shrink back, -makes this haul condition. "Prince, thou shall go dis'ul.-ed le Arthur' hall And hire thyself te serve for meats and drinks Among the scullions and the kitchen-knaves, .inn iue.se in. ii 11:11111 iiitMiiMi across inc ear. Ner shalt thou tell thy name te any one, And thou shalt serve a twelve-mouth and a day' Hut the mother misjudges her son. Net in any way like this is this bold spirit te be daunted, and in a moment mere he flings his answer back "The thrall iu person may be ircein soul," and the wistful mother has no, mero te say. Te Camclet speeds the thappy youth and enters Arthurs service and "all forglerv underweiU The sooty yoke of kitchen vassalage," and the grim Sir Kay, the seneschal, sets him at most laborious and menial tasks. Then fellows a pleasant picture of the boy's liie among the kitchen thralls, and wc read that "Ciareth bew'd himself With all ebedience te the king, and wrought All kinds of servicu Willi a noble ease TJiat graced the lowliest act ill doing It." All strong, neble soul:; early Icaru the virtue of obedience and this fair stripling is no exception, when the thralls have talk among themselves of Arthur and of Lancelet and their great deeds, the young prince is glad of heart. " but if their talk was foul" for Garctlfs companions were of their kind. "Then would he whistle rapid as any lark. Or enrel sonic old roundelay, and so'leud. That, first they mocked, but, after, reverenced him," But after a month the queen, who has privately told Arthur of her son's adven ture, releases him from his vow. At his own request the joyous boy is made a knight in secret and is premised the first quest. Glory is his only mistres', ler of love lie knows net yet. " Ged wet I love net yet, Rut love 1 shall, Und willing." he cries, and that very day he starts in pursuit of the one while the toils of the ether arc cast around him. Ne mere than another is he te escape that sweet iullu iullu ence which makes some men and mars oUieisaudhe passes under it ere he is aware, for " that Mime day there passed Inte the hail A damsel of high lineage, and a brew .May-blo.i.sem, and a cheek or apple-blossom, Hawk-eyes; and lightly was her slender iicxe Tip-tilled like, the petal et a Hewer." Truly a sweet picture she must have made pleading her cause before the king and " a sight te make an old man young," and Gareth who felt the first stirrings of the gcutle passion and knew net what it mis reminded the king of hispromise, though the damsel had asked for Sir Lan Lan ceeot te defend her sister Lyonors against her enemies. But Lynctte dc Bcribes the perils that beset her sister, and the four knights, who call themselves Morning Star, Noen Sun, Evening Star and Death, that arej leagued against her, and again beseeches the aid of the great Lancelet. Up springs Gareth, exclaiming with the pardonable beastfulncss of a boy te te the blameless king : " Then knewcslthy kitchen-knave am I, And mighty thre' thy meats and drinks am I, And I cab topple ever a hundred such." And the king, remembering his premise, grants him the quest and the youth's heart is glad. Net se the damsel, for at this disan- peintment en her "Forehead, shame, pride, wrath, Slew the May-white. Sbeliftedcltherarin. Fie en thee, king r I asked ler thy cliief knight, And thou hast given me but a It ilelien-knavc' Then, ere a man in hall could tav her, tnru'd, Fled down the lane of access te the king. Toek horse, descended the slope street, and past The weird, white gate and paused without The Held el Tourney, murmuring kitchen knave.' " One can hardly blame her petulance. After having asked for the braveBt knight of all the Table Round te be thus put off with a beardless boy who is te her kuewlcdge only a servant of the meaner sort, well might vex her past endurance and hence it was when Gareth armed and -ready came where she lingered by the field of tourney, she " I nipt her slender nose, Willi vctulant thumb and linger shrilling, Hence ! Avoid, thou sincllcst all el kitchen grease." It was net a gcntle speech for a high born maiden, but the lash of her disap pointment still smote her. Full sweetly Gareth replies le all her taunts "wlthasmlle That liiaddun'd her, and away she flashed again Down the long avemu-set ft boundless weed, And Uureth following was -again beknaved." Very seen she has occasion te ask his services, but still her manner is scornful and her request- made most reluctantly. JANUARY 27, 1881 "Sir kitchen-knave, I have mljs'd the only way Where Arthur's men are set along the .weed. The weed is nigh as full of thieves as leaves ; If both be slain, 1 am rid et thee, but yet, fir Scullion, ean'st thou ue that spit of thine ? light and thou can'st: I have niiss'd the only way." A little later en their journey Gareth rescues a " stalwart Baren " from the clutches of these who would slay him, but even yet the scornful lady puts no trust in Gareth, exclaiming But dcem.net I accept thee nughl tlie mero, Scullion, ler running sharply with thy spit Down en a rout et craven foresters. A thresher with hwfl-iii iimi ce-,,ifi,i (I,, Nay ter thou sincllcst of the kitchen still." " Disappointment has lent a sharp edge te the fair damsel's tongue, for she proves an able mistress of abus3. "A villain littci te slick swine limn ride about redressing women's wrong," she calls him but she docs net move him te a tart reply. At last a little pity, womau-like, mingles with her scorn, and she urges him te re treat and net te attempt battle with her sister's terrible fees, but courteously Ga reth answers "Say thou thy say, or net', 1 WII1 de my deed; Allew inc ler mine hour,' and thou wilt And My fortunes all as fair iu hmsi -lm !. Among the ashes and wedded the King's son." Soen they go, revilcr and reviled, until they reach the pavilion of the Knight of the Morning Star, with whom Gareth ngnts. iven the scornful damsel cannot repress her admiration of his prowess, and cries out " Well stricken, kitchen knave." and at last Gareth is victor. Weman-like tee, she repents her of having, iheuglvcvcr se little, relented towards her follower as wc shall sec. "Knave, when I watched thee striking en the bridge Thcsavoref thy kitchen came upon me A little faintlier, but the wind hath changed ; I fcccnt it twenty-told." That the damsel is no pleasant traveling companion is easy te te be seen, but Gareth bears all her taunts most patiently. On they ride and new the second knight, him of the noonday sun, is encountered and overthrown, and Gareth asks ; "Hath net the geed wind, damsel, chumcil ugnin, and stoutly she replies : " Nay net a point; nor art thou victor here. I here lies a ridge of slate across the ford I I is horse thereon slumbled-ay, for I saw it." A man of mere experience iu the wiles of womanhood might perhaps have scen in this steul denial reinforced by the con fident assertion, the evidence of wavering behind the bold front and have taken courage. In spite of herself her spirits rise at this second victory and she carols .-.- , a verse of a love song yet turns te sav te Gareth following after. hat knewest thou of love -,eng or of love? jij', i"y. l"l wet, se thou wert. nobly bem, iiiiui unstii iiiuasuui presence." She cannot, though she would, remain all indifferent te this handsome stripling who has proved himself se brave, and yet bitter little speeches rise te her. lips as if te make amends for the growing tender ness of heart. ' O, dewy flowers that open te the sun," sings she and then the bitter taunt must have its aim "What knewcsl thou et flowers, except, be be Te garnish meats with? Hath net our geed Kins Who lent thee me. the Hewer el Klt-limirm ... irv.ieu miu Jin nutvuin. it iKit SUCK round A ljxlluli liii'n t..H . 1. ....... ... lirl a ... ye The pastry? Wherewithal deck the head?" bear's "O birds, that warble te the evening sky," ' she sings ence mere, and ence mere fol fel lows the scornful word at war with her heart's premptings. "What knewcsl then of birds, lark, mavis. 111U1 If, Lliinat? these be Ter the snare, (Se runs thy fancy) thepe be for the spit, Larding and basting." She can say this te Gareth and yet se strange a thing is wemau, she can cry exultantly te the Knight of the Evening Star when they come into his presence : "Reth thy younger brethren have gene down llclere this youth; and se wilt thou. Sir Star?" Leng and desperate is this third conflict and the damsel who new has hardly breath for taunts is crying all the while : "Well done, knave knight, well stricken, O geed knight-knave. O knave, as noble as any erall the knights Strike, thou art worthy el the Table Ueund Strike strike Ihe wind will never change again." Ne wonder that : that the poet tells us new "(iineth, Hearing, ever strenglier smote." A third time our kitchen knave is con queror and new the damsel says as well she may : "I trail no lenger: ride thou at my side; Theu art the. Kingliest of all kitchen knaves." Petulant, roomful and abusive we have seen this damsel, but thcre is a noble nature underneath or never cenld she se gracefully atone for all her injuries. "Sir-and in geed faith, I fain had added knight lint I hat 1 heard thoe call thysclt a knave, iMinuicd am I that I se rebuked, reviled, Missaid thee; noble I am, and thought the king Scorned nic and mine; and, new thy pardon, rnend. Fer thou hast ever answered courteously. And wholly bold thou art, and mock withal As any of Arthur's best, but, being knave Hath lnuzcd my wit: I marvel what then art." A Iillle later in a tilt with a stranrmr knight, who proves te be the brave Sir Lancelet, Gareth, is overthrown aud the damsel cannot repress a momentary cry of vexation. Shamed and overthrown, And tumbled back into the kitchen knave, and when she learns that this is Lancelet, and that G:ircth is a prince and knight, the petulance returns for she fancies that she been tricked. Bitterly she exclaims : "Where should be truth if net in Arthur's hall, In Arthur's presence? knlghl, knave, nilncc and feel, lliatu thee and forever." Net wholly easy is it te allay this storm of wrath but it is done and at last when Gareth sleeps, worn-out with conflict, the maiden, who can doubt new that her heart is no longer hers, gazes en him musing the while : "Seem I net as lender te him As any mother? Ay but such a one And next his day, but blesses him asleep.' " The fourth Knight, Dcath, has stiIl.te,bc encountered and Lancelet, ever courteous, lends Gareth for that purpose his own fresh steed and mighty shield at the inter cession of Lynettc. But as they near the presence of this last awful champion all the woman in Lynctte bursts forth in pas sionate utterance as she implores Gareth te give place te Lancelet. "Tis he must light; I curse the tongue that all thre' yesterday Reviled thee and hath wrought en Lancelet new Te lend thee horse and shield: wonders ye have done Miracles ye cannot ; here is glorenrew In having flung the three.' " It is full of charming pathos this scene : the pleading girl, with clasped hands, all her petulance melted away, all her pride swallowed up in 'one evcrinifctcring feel ing of fear that this bravp prince whom she cannot cheese but love should be over thrown and killed. In the prcsonce of this awful possibility all reserve is Hung aside and the real woman stands revealed " I sec thee maimed, Mangled: 1 swear thou cans t net fling the fourth. O.prince, I went for Lancelet tirM , The quest Is Lancelets give him back the ihleld.' " But Gareth, resolute as ever, will net giye ever te Lancelet who tells him hew best te ."meet a mightier than himself " in the person of this fourth knight while the damsel listens half-heart-broken. " Heaven help thee," sigh'd Lynettc." But this terrible fourth knight proves but a blooming boy arraved in trrisslY ar mer by his brothers who never dreamed of being themselves overthrown. Se the quest of the young knight was wen. " And he that told that the tale in earlier timet Says that Sir Gareth wedded Lyonors." That surely we cannot bolieve ; all the internal evidence of the story is against it. " But hetliat told it later says Lyuette." It seems te me that thcre is something mero inthis tale than a beautiful Arthurian legend gracefully told by one of the noblest poets of our day. Te my mind Gar eth represents one who steadfastly presses forward te reach the highest goal he knows regardless of difficulty and scornful of all meaner aims. A nature like that of this tall son of Belliccnt's, conscious of inward peace, may well bear with naticnee the - 1 slings and arrows of the world's contenipt.
