J. K. II artzlkr. . M r ", i (' . C3,Wben the (inzette pa-wd into Mr. Over's hands about a year ago. the School Journal appeared with the following appreciative notice of the then retiring Editor. We take great pleasure in transferring to the Educa tional Column the well considered words of 'the father of our common school system : '■The Eewistown Gazette oi Alarm. A*o paper in tins >*t:tc lias been more liberal aud open to the cause of Education, and from none have we extracted more nam *r ous or telling educational articles. We wish the retiring Editor success in whatever pursuit he may be called to. — • - Home Conversation. Children hunger perpetually for new ideas, and the most pleasant way of reception is by the voice and car, not the eye and the printed page. The one mode is natural, the other is artificial. Who would not rather listen than read' An audience will listen closely from the beginning to the end of an address which not one in twenty of those pres ent would read with the same atten tion. This is emphatically true ot children. They will learn with pleas are from the lips of parents what they deem it drudgery to study in the books; and even if they have the misfortune to be deprived of the educational ad vantage- which they desire, thev can not fail to grow*up intelligent if they enjoy in childhood and youth tbepiiv ilege of listening daily to the conver sation of intelligent people. Let pa rents, then, talk much and talk well at home. A father who is habitually silent in his own house may be. in many respects, a wise man, but be is not wise in his silence. Mr* Elegant English, The Nation thus comments upon the use of "fine language"' in this coun try : '■Jlow few people live in house- ; low many 'reside' in 'residences' or 'mansions.' J low few schools there are left ; bow many 'academies' and 'institutes and 'establishments.' Ihe race ot women is nearly extinct, while 'ladies' swarm all over the land. Such a thing a> a fowl is now bardlv ever seen on a dinner-table; the oldest cock that is ever served up is sure to be a 'chicken.'* Aluttoii, too, is becoming scarcer and scarcer, lamb' i- mor ■ plentiful. Stewed ovsters am chicken salad arc neither a supper noi a lunch, but an 'elegant collation.
