I '}r&t of April'. —This day of exeliang ing houses, of rents due, and of payments on property and lands, transferred its bus iness to the 2d, the first having fallen on Sunday. The streets were soon tilled with busy people, wagons and other vehi cles. all laden with household goods.— P.efore the noonday meal had been eaten in the "new doinieil," the clouds gathered and the rain descended. Then the patter of muddy feet on the newly scrubbed or swept Hoofs, sounded unpleasantly in the ears of the "gude housewife." Thus it was a day of pleasure ami trouble alike, mid passed oil' with the usual round of hard labor. We saw several eggs, but beard no one cry "April fool." Heavy Contrm-t J'or Iron Ore. —Messrs. Locke A Irwin have contracted to deliv er to Glamorgan Iron Co. five thousand turns of iron ore. This will give employ ment to many hands at good wage:*? and will largely doveiope the ore deposits near this place. KjreUoncut at I'arJ.ers. —Don't he alarmed. It is not the excitement that conies of guns, pistols and bowio knives; but only that which is incident to the arrival of a new stock of goods, at nearly the old prices. Crowds of customers now throng that old and popular establish ment examining and buyitfg dress goods, eioths. and hundreds of other things as attractive as they are cheap. Sleep Killed. — A line llock of sheep, the j average value of which would haveproba- j biy reached Mb, belonging to Yost Voder of Hrown township, were nearly all killed ■ ■ iti Saturday night by a dog. There ought ! to be a heavy penalty imposed by law j upon any person retaining a dog inclined : ! i chasing -hep, and the owner also be j intide responsible for all damage such vi- j i mis animals may commit. We. in it. Opinions are divided as : > it- origin. There was no fire in tlm j >: >\*i on lite previous day, which gives color to incendiarism, but on t lie other j '•and it is said the floor about the stove j was in a bad condition, and that lire j might have been smouldering under it ; for some time, and burst forth as soon as a draught of air was let in by opening the ( door, which is also plausible. /'V/v i ' /'uren. —On Saturday afternoon, J a little before live o'clock, the shop or] r-tablo of John (hill, situate on the alley i back of Mill street, was discovered to be ; on fire, and in half an hour was burnt to j the ground. The rain had made the streets i and alleys very muddy, and the firemen had a hard time of it, hut buttled manful ly, and with the nid of hose and hooks succeeded in saving the adjoining build ings. The shop contained some fixtures, tools, lots of old iron, and many other things which the owner was in the habit of purchasing, a small portion <>f which was saved. Loss probably from >:iOU to •Sko. It is not known how the tire orig inated, some contending it was accidental, others from incendiarism. About dusk another alarm was raised oy the roof of Ib- sc A Single's foundry and machine -*mp catching, but it was extinguished before much harm wasdone. I'lie Hendersons again had a muddy run, furnishing pretty conclusive evidence that playing fireman in earnest is neither piofitable nor funny, and encouraging such men ought to be a duty and a pleas ure. The grass in one of Mr. Burns' field* over the river caught fire on Thursday last, some allege from the locomotive, anil burnt over aiiotit an acre. A similar oc currence took place a month or -o ago in Mr. Benedict's field, near the Dorcas street station, showing that if the MifiHti A Centre locomotive is not provided with a spaVk catcher the proper authorities ought to see that one is furnished.
