MRimmRAL Hints to Horticultural Learners. Wo cannot tell u person how to suc ceed in any horticultural pursuit be yond a poradventure, as sometimes correspondents seem to think; for some will tail in almost any undertaking no matter how flattering the prospects, while others will succeed where things do not look altogether promising. We can, however, give a tew hints that we have no doubt will be useful; and though designed for one, will be inter esting to many. In regard to an apple orchard, then, we remark, that summer varieties should not bo grown to any extent un less you live near a large city where the market will be good. Shippers do not buy summer fruit. The late fall and winter varieties are the most prof itable. It is not best to select too ma ny varieties for sale, though it is well to get a tree or trees each of the most promising sorts for trial. While qual ity must not be forgotten, some atten tion must be paid to the appearance. A bright rod, showy apple like the Baldwin, always sells well, if of fair quality. Shippers do not like to be troubled with too many sorts, and they can afford to give a little more in ma ny cases if the grower can furnish them with a thousand barrels, than though they had to make up the thous and by purchasing of a dozen different parties. We do not believe there is the least danger that the market will he overstocked with good fruit in a century. This has been the cry ever since we can remember, and yet apples arc now worth three times what they were when we first heard the fear ex pressed that in a few years they would not bo worth the picking. The same remarks apply to pears, except that we would plant more ex tensively of the fall and winter varie ties. Wo need more experience about winter pears, but this we are gaining quite rapidly. Xot one in a hundred of our people have the privilege of eat ing a good pear in a year. The de mand cannot be met fully during the present generation, so there is no dan ger of having to feed pears to the hogs tor some time to come. Y\ e are making very rapid advances in grape culture, and we know that some complain that the fruit sells be low a fair compensation for growing. This fact was stated at the last meet-1 ing of the Fruit Growers' Society of Western New York. The truth, however, is, that good grapes never brought a better price than this autumn. It is only those who send to market unripe fruit, en tirely unfit for human consumption, that have reason to complain. The Largest Ilog ever seen in America —An immense hog was killed in New York January 12, by Lippincott & Martin, butch ers, 511 Teuth Avenue He was freely exhibited, while alive, by his feede • before the door of Ihe Agriculturist and other newspaper offices, and excited much inter est, Mr. A. H. Benham, of McLean, Totnpkins co., N. Y., by whose judicious management his weight reached the enor mous figure of 1355 lbs., has been careful to have h.s weight repeatedly taken and certified to under oath. In February, 1863. he weighed 1120 lbs ; in October 1276 lbs ; December 19th, 1340 lbs.; and December 29th, when he left home for the Metropo lis, 1355 lbs. He fell off rapidly during the fortnight which intervened before he was slaughtered, and did not feed well, but was active, stood and walked in a very unusual manner for so fat an animal. When killed, January 12tb, his live weight was 1272 lbs ; dressed weight 1174 lbs.; offall lbs.; blood 25 lbs. Through the cour tesy oi Mr. Benham we have secured the Skin and placed it in the hands of a skill • ful taxidermist to be piepared and 'set up' in life-like form, and placed in the office of The Agriculturist, where it will stand as Mr. Benham's challenge to the world. It will be fiuished early during this month.— American Agriculturist. Estate of Isabella Campbell, deceased.
